Your post is really dumb presentation of this tech.
Moore's law is not a law (i.e. nothing is obliged to follow it), therefore it cannot cause problems, let alone have inherent problems. And 3D transistors aren't any "workaround" for Moore's law, they are actually technology that can keep the trend of exponential increase of number of transistors to continue for longer time than it was previously possible. It's more like the opposite of workaround.

It's not the sheer number of transistors, it's the degree of integration of integrated circuits (double the transistors in the same area).

Originally (1965), the law stated 2 times each year. In 1975, Moore revised it to 2 times each 2 years.

Performance these days in constrained by money/marketing.
No one is going to go out and do the best they can because they stand to kill their market like the mouse or sound card has.

They dribble out controllable/predictable performance improvements to ensure they keep their markets alive for longer.

The problem nvida and intel face is they are on the verge of producing hardware where they'll soon be able to produce movie like games in realtime, which will kill their market because the investment needed to make graphics will be so huge that the people doing the graphics will not be able to keep up. So there will be less demand for upgrades.

Its already happening with many people running modern games on old hardware, what about microsoft and XP?

Intel are already shitting themselves and trying to push realtime raytracing, becuase it has a huge need for power, shame then that the effects of ray tracing can be faked and are somewhat irrelevant.

Every product/market has an end. Once you reach the end you rely on gimmicks or corruption to continue it. Or a revolution and they are few and far between.

So IMO moore's law is more of an excuse for people to drag out upgrades than a real technical limitation.

What I said refers to Intel, which is why I used them. AMD have about 20% of the CPU market, so before they can string the public along like INTEL, they first need to get into a postion where they can compete with INTEL on performance/price.
Instead of slashing prices becuase THEY KNOW they can't compete for performance.

There is little to no reason to buy an AMD CPU over Intel after late 2005. But if AMD did come out with something crazy tomorrow, it would not surprise me if INTEL responded pretty quick

well amd bulldozer cpus are on pair with overclocked sandy brige cpus. amd is back to the war, at least until intel releases their trigate transistor cpu's. But amd Fx57 was the bomb :D

it's not certain at this point but it will be extremely close, amd having signifiantly higher clocks and true 8 ore cpus might be in their favour. The performance results seem to be really close clock by clock. but wait untill full release for real reviews with proper bioses and the final silicon.

Someone at TPU bought an ES and violated the NDA, bad thing some of the chip blocks arent working at full speed, because bioses arent ready for it, or the sample is fucked.

They are not exactly out yet, but no doubt things can change as they have with AMD over the years.

I can only talk for what are established facts at the moment.

The closer AMD get to INTEL, the more Intel have to give. My observation over the years is INTEL have been playing with AMD, as soon as AMD get close, intel seem to always have another card up their sleeve.

Unless intel has some super secret cpus ready for release, the competition between amd and intel will be a good thing for the consumers till the ivy bridge release somewhere in 2012.

when ure a standard consumer AMD still delivers near if not better performance for the buck.

If you want the fastest intel is what u need sure, but if you have a budget amd is still generally the way to go

there are many other factors for chips, not only performance:
energy consumption, nowadays we have power supply units with 500+ Watts ... it used to be 220 Watt once ... cooler temperatures are also needed for cpu's so you need less fans and the system is more silent ... and companys or labs for earth simulation will always need more power to be able to do more detailed simulations, when it comes down to simulation of happenings in nature you cannot have enough power ... but it's true, for private use need for more computing power is coming to a dead end, I mean for office applications we are already at the dead end, a non gamer can still use a computer from 5-6 years ago, soon this will also be the case for gaming, since games don't need to be ultra realistic ...
