Quake Live is hardly fun, hardly interesting for a general spectator, its not modern in any way, and the no.1 important thing in esports is the amount of players, and to get that, the game must be fun.
So esports IS about the game, and it IS about the fun... Quake Live just isn't. Not really fun to play, and not really fun to watch.

What? I enjoy speccing good duel games more than actually playing myself. In every duel tournament there are always so many thriller maps. I honestly try to spec as many games as I can every single LAN event. Like the 2010 Quakecon duel and ctf finals, epic stuff. The same goes for IEM every time. Last event there were loads of ppl speccing the game aswell if im not mistaken.

I don't know if you played the game longer, but personally i played the quake series since 96, and played Q3 from beta to now in Quake Live, it was thrilling to watch for me as well for some years.

1) Fighting games are just as hardcore.

2) CS is the preferred game because of it's popularity, but unlike SC2 or SSF4, it's dumbed down in it's core. So if we believe QL should be there as a DM title, something like QW TDM should be the TDM title. Or QL TDM at the very least, it's still miles better.

With all these orgs dropping Quake, i'd say it's about time to execute Alpha-plan x923. Yes, orgs are mostly goons, and they have no future. That's why they're selling out now, sucking up every penny they can find. Esports of the future will all be organized and operated by the game-companies themselves. First-party all the way, to such an extent, the companies will deny third-parties the use of their games in any for-profit events. It's simple business, and the most common copyright laws apply.

With that in mind, id should start running all their own tournaments. If they did it right, Quake would become the most profitable of all pro-games. And what they learn from doing it in QL, they can apply to future ventures.

What's funny to me is how every single IEM event, the entire ESR comments page for the event is full of "FUCK ESL, ESL SUCKS!!!" and now when they remove quake live, everyone says "WHYYYYY ESL, WHYYYYY YOU REMOVE OUR GAME, YOU RUN AWAY FROM YOUR ROOTS ESL, NOOOO." Maybe if the community was more mature in general, they'd be more willing to keep quake live. I can imagine they're just as glad to not visit ESR and see the entire forum bringing them down with curses and non-helpful insults.

League of Legends has come a long way, for example, year ago it was in no condition what so ever to even be regarded as a competative game, it was just a big mess.

Then they added "Ranked" which created a ladder to sort out bad from talented. Teams recruited top players and later on formed teams, a certain team, CLG claimed the title of LoLs first official tournament. Which was the start of LoL competative gaming, weekly tourneys were made ESLs Go4LoL being the most popular one, European LoL scene grew and grew, even the servers couldnt handle the mass of players logging in and playing at the same time.

In 2011 LoL was already competative, it didnt have a spectator nor replay mode, alternative solutions were made (somewhat primitive) such as third-party re-play program and another slot for spectators, which would place one in which ever team. Thousands of players watch(ed) live coverage of matches and just regular ranked games via own3d.tv.

LoL was/is doing well. at the start of Summer, Dreamhack LoL 100k$ tourney was announced, Riot games sent 8 teams, to compete for 50k$ and the title of Season One Champions.
3 from US, 3 from EU and 2 from Asia. Ofcourse there had to be qualifiers, so DH Qualifiers matches were held, US qualifiers broke the record with 69,000 continuous, unique viewers for any eSports event ever. After the qualifiers were determined, they were sent to Jönköping, Sweden to Dreamhack - LoL Season One Championship.
Where LoL broke its previous record of 69,000 unique continuous viewers with 200,000+ unique continuous viewers in a eSports event. Which was won by team Fnatic.MSI
Spectator mode was introduced during Dreamhack, which made the viewing much more enjoyable.

Quake Live was pretty fun to watch at the start, but its constant and predictable duel scene eventually got boring.

The game has a very low skillcap (and yes I know what I'm talking about, I've played that game more than 1000games and was fairly high ranked in Solo queue) and easily reachable.
The only thing that decides who is the best team from another is the teamplay they have built by practicing and that's it, there is nothing else involved on a 'high level'.

Needless to say this is hell of a shitty game for competitions but unlike id, riot promoted their FREE and newbie friendly game with ton of money and it paid out.

After that move from ESL, I'm concerned to what 'esport' is leading to. It can't be a good thing in the long run if a skillless game can make it to that list instead of QL

It's funny that five years ago, winz was on the CPL 1v1 committee and we were having the same conversations. This was the same thing that we discussed in IRC at length.

The difference is whether your place in esports is bought or earned.

Years ago, one of the things that I really tried to get across that I hated was the decision to just throw the title of "esport" to any game without proving itself. Adopting a new game just because they either bought in or just because it's "newest" shoudn't happen. It took time to get the things that esports needs right. Things like spectator modes, dedicated servers, and correct gameplay.

Id worked with us to provided dedicated servers for an event we did last year and at least is working on some of the issues. They also have years of experience with their other titles.

I've known Riot's Esports manager, Matt Marcou for years and while I think that they'll get it right in time, it's almost a shame that they're getting the spotlight this early because now that it's a featured game the way it is, what incentive do they have to fix what's wrong with it like the spectator issues?

Please elaborate on what makes a franchise deserving of having tournaments hosted for it. Because, ideally, there would be a lot of criteria going into deciding such a thing, and LoL fits the bill (lots of players, constant updates, great community support, easy to spectate, even caters to players who aren't awfully fond of RTSes better than Quake and FPS, respectively) moreso than QL ever did. Not to mention, unlike QL, you can pretty much earn all the features of the game by playing and playing as opposed to paying money, and yet there's the option of paying for these features as well if you don't want to invest the time and energy, both of which are obviously going to attract new players better than QL does.

I have also played league at high solo queue level and agree, being a mediocre quake player and regularly outplaying players even that were at that tournament, that the skill ceiling is far too low- but people find the game fun and enjoyable to watch. In the long run a game like LoL can at the very least bring in the money to pay the bills and fund successful competitive games like SC2. Quake unfortunately has been a detrimental leech in competitive gaming for years. Carmack is too busy building rockets instead of good video games these days, sad truths.

For several years now, the e-sports industry has been adapting to the repercussions of the CPL leaving everyone hanging as well as tough economic times, and have been doing so by catering to newer, more popular games out there. And yet the QL fanboys are so sheltered, they don't even realize this and are being left in the dust rather than scrambling for alternative options, and all because they expect these major tourneys, which cost a lot of money to run in the first place, to be handed to them on a silver platter. I can imagine HoN's players have the same mindset, minus the legacy that Quake has.
