Personally, I like the freedom people have on this site, and I would change the moderation only slightly. I would like to see a few recent spammer banned for good. Then, I believe certain kind of character have become part of this site and even if all they do is troll, they are somewhat harmless and fun at times.

exactly. ESR is one of the very few public internet forums that has almost no moderation, and also everyone here is at least 21 years old.

does moderators have to judge jokes quality?

Unfortunately I was removed as a moderator during a period when I was very inactive (had no internet).

I don't know what the current situation is, but back then there were a large amount of moderators and it was very much a communal thing. Then it got all professional and stuff and we got a head admin and a large amount of admins were removed (including myself).

It's a difficult problem how to organize moderation, as it may get to casual if you have to many users as moderators, but if it gets too formal you isolate the community.

One way is to allow users to ignore entire user-groups (like anonymous/new/regular/trusted etc.). Could also have a feature allowing you to view comments by an ignored member or group, based on whether the comment gets enough plusses.

Potential new readers get first impressions with their ignore list empty. If the site is full of shit they are more likely to walk away.

i'd like to have a way to downvote posts, from a certain threshhold on those posts should not be visible to non-registered users and those who choose not to.

with a setup like that and a somewhat active community the strain on the mods would be far less even if we would allow anons to post without approval, as they would mostly deal with file uploads and users on probation.

i'd love to have a strict NSFW policy regarding images and vids though, there are other places for material like that.

a downvote system is far superior to the ignore function we have right now, as we'd a) "ignore" someone based on the actual content of his/her posts and b) have the ability (as the userbase of a site) to annoy trolls by making their posts invisible to the majority of visitors.

i think you misunderstood me or never visit sites that use a system like the one i'd like to have for esr.

go to reddit.com for example, downvoted posts do not disappear, you click on "load more comments" and get them back (expand the threaded view) even as a non-registered user.

registered users could freely choose the threshhold at which posts start to get hidden, if you're fine with everything that gets posted you'd simply choose "view all" and forget about the feature.

yea but the option to hide someone's comment does imply a forced by community opinion on the matter -and if youtube has a large character of generalisation, esr is a heavy-quake based site, which would missjudge comments more often than a general site like youtube

How about some extension of ignore functionality which is already working here?

Like, if some person here ignored by some number of users then his ability to post will be suspended until this number will be lowered to something smaller.

This way, seasoned ESR users will do self-moderation of the site, filtering not so obvious trolls and spammers out and making it more appealing for newbies.

Edit: after some thinking, I concluded that is should be separate feature, done in the same way as ignore. Ignore function serves totally different goal and should remain as is.

The lack of moderation is what makes ESR such a good site. People can actually speak their batshit crazy minds unlike on sites such as teamliquid.

I would get rid off the spam but not extend the moderation to censorship. Censoring ESR and banning people for offensive content is like trying to get Sneakers o Toole to take his sneakers off.

Cleaning fragerr-type of 4chan monkeys who use this site to merely throw their doodoo around by creating often single sentence unfunny threads is a sound idea. Raythenoob and Fudge911 would be the contemporary representation of too little parental attention.

the problem is, on a per-user level, one mans fragerr-type tard is another mans voice of descent or someone who should not be censored because of what or who is popular with everyone else. this is too subjective and doesn't allow rehabilitation.

so by using probation, you have moderation on a per-post level, and this could be improved. brandan/seven/sdfasdf was working on a 'report' feature which would have required someone to report a comment, and then at least 2 or more admin votes to delete said comment, but he quit. this actually would have made policies more relaxed, and was meant to replace pre-moderation.

policy wise, I don't think any changes are necessary. no technical changes to moderation or other programming improvements to the site are likely to happen until some investment, the first prerequisite being that the site is re-written from scratch. if anyone wants to contribute to the site, feel free to talk to me on irc. we can actually try a change in policy, but it has to be sound and original, and if it requires programming, you have to do it yourself.

I think new visitors to the site will read the news posts mostly, and browse the comments there. If they feel like lurking through the rest of the site, it is pretty obvious how some threads go nowhere, but help threads(hw/config/etc) have good replies. If they like what they see, I think they will join in.

Basically, I believe that those interested in an ESR style would not be affected by spammers.

Just get rid of xou, and all will be fine.
