Back when i played quake 1 (yes the pre qw version) i used to own up the xs4all ffa servers.

Then someday a guy (bforce) came along, spotted my talent and told me there was such a thing as qw , i was like "sure i'll try'.

And what do you know, i got owned for months and months. Did that discourage me? No. Did that encourage me? Yes very much so because i knew i could be as good as them.

The hitboxes is part of the issue but its surely not the main thing, even with the new easier aiming i can still see a lot of skill difference even on tier 4 .Not to toot my own horn but i still aim better than 90 % of all tier 4 players by occasionally playing.

Yeah, dedicated servers would be great. Tryt o make the publics skillmatched with a better skillmatch system, and let the private servers have the mix. But I guess with the small community and the skillmatch system being kinda broke it still wouldn't matter for the pubs. But with there are just too many 8-0 ctf games going on.

Being able to LAN would be great, Quake is an awesome game but so much is missing that you can't just have an intranet game within your local network. Maybe they make a real Quake 5 and learn from mistakes and let dedicated servers happen as well as LAN on a DVD and use QuakeLive as an supplement or something. Yeah with the publics being what it is it's not competitive.

How many, neither of us knows. The free part was certainly a big reason, but i think most of those players left already when subscriptions were announced. And pulling 11 frags on me (4 of which were garbage time) after a few hours duel practice without a config, 60hz tft and a mouse pad covered in wax over the new year/holiday period is quite an awesome testament to my skill given I play less quake in a year than most regular players do in a week.

Dird was also pulling over 20 frags on me at that point and unlike you, he doesn't cheat.

Bots can be configured/coded to do all sorts of things to avoid detection and due to the rate of fire from a shaft, it would be one of the easiest weapons to manipulate. At the most basic they can be turned on/off.

Your quake live name is the same as your esr name? Also my skill level has nothing to do with it. It's based on having played 8000 ctf games with these guys and knowing how they all match up. They are not tier 2, sorry but that's just wrong, even if there are just 2 tiers on ctf on NA servers (3 and 4).

That only works to a certain extent. At some point, the game goes from "we lost, but it's close enough that I can see realistic room for improving to their level" and "200-17, I'm just going to watch some porn or something because this couldn't POSSIBLY be any more boring." There's a distinction and the majority of servers I come across in the states are full of slummers who loves to jack up their stats so they just stack the teams wildly and it is zero fun for the other team.

it seems like people's inclination to play versus players that are better than themselves has stopped altogether. I mean, isn't it the purpose of games in general? Get better by playing people that are above your level. But if people casually play QL to rape noobs then I can understand the dilemma. I have the feeling that changing the system won't help - you have to change the players attitude. Unless you have a match-making system like WC3/SC2 but I should stop dreaming :)

Most of the people on this list are just better than you, and the people you are accusing of ruining your games play far more competitive pickup style games than you are willing to admit.

First of all, before i even bother with the list below, people should know you mostly play pickups 90% of the time and a large majority of the players below aren't premium members hence why you might not know them, but many of them have been around in ql for a long time now.

the dude plays every map, mostly plays last morning-afternoon. if you look at his games from last week. He only lost once and usually by blow out margins (8-2). That's his regular routine (from stacking). When people throw games or try to screw with him for stacking like they did this week, then lol you see a vastly different player. This dude along with weirdwolf are 2 of the worst on na ctf ql servers when it comes to stacking. They're total pussies.

yes, he quits every game he's in if he's not on the stacked team. He is currently THE WORST stacker in north america. He wills tay in spec and join the winning team midway through or go to spec if he starts losing again and then rejoins winning team. He's everything that is wrong with CTF but like Gragor (who joined the winning team last second for win), NOTHING is being done about the fucker as he continues to ruin games for people. H'es played almost 8,000 games since aug 2009 so you can imagine the effect he's had on that playerbase. But NO, instead of doing what's right, Syncerror does nothing.

Granted this was a while ago but I found it rather ironic as I started searching for some of these names and saw postings about how good these people were on your own board.

I, personally, stopped playing because of it. I mean everyone once in a while you expect it to happen, but it's EVERY single server I would join would be slummers stacking teams so unbelievably one-sided that it is zero fun whatsoever. I don't pretend to speak for everyone, but it's much more common than you think, and I'm sure there are several others besides myself who stopped playing because of how annoying it can be on QL servers here.

QuakeLive's atmosphere does provoke the topic of fairness and class and doesn't necessarily mean mental instability. Americans have always had a strong passion for what they think is right and wrong or what justice is, and for many of the games that go on in the pubs of QuakeLive it does strike nerves---but the old America is kinda fading away so those virtues may be viewed as insane now. The aliasing and tierslumming just adds a level of dishonesty to the game. You would think that these people who continually rape the servers almost by themselves would get bored and play more competitive games but you cannot expect such-it's just about punking out the weak-that is the central motive behind many of these players. That's why dedicated private servers work, you can filter and ban who you don't want to play with and play with who you want. The Qlive system you cannot prevent the trolls from joining your server-session.


It's an easy thing for id to do too to make a banlist or whatever that can be loaded of names and they can get a disconnect if they try to join. But id doesn't really give a shit and the game crashes more now than it did back in the beta. You cannot hope to get more new content probably only old regenerated maps that were already played years ago, so yeah who really gives a shit?

Almost id's entire approach to QL was wrong. They treat it like a game from the 90's. They market it like a game from the 90's. It's such a basic game, devoid of most new advances in gaming.

Look at how they introduce people to the game. 'Hottest multiplayer fps of the decade'... first of all, 'hottest' is a cliche', secondly, the entire statement is questionable, and if untrue, it is delusional or a plain lie, and if true, it is narcissistic, thirdly: why tell people how old the game is anyway? It's like a 50 year-old woman who looks 25, telling you she's 50. You would have fucked her if you didn't know she was 50. Besides, who fucking cares what the game was yesterday? All that matters for an esport, is what the game is today and what the game will be tomorrow. It's all part of the broad mentality problem of the QL staff. They don't think of QL as an esport, they just think of it as a game. '20 maps and 100 useless player-models'... what the fuck does that have to do with esports? Absolutely nothing... it's just bullshit game-design from 1993. How about instead of that, it said something like, 'Professional tournaments year-round'?

Maybe the worst thing about what id has done to QL, is how they never realize, that without esports, QL would have failed entirely. All but one duel were against people that i know and im friends with.

Of the 35 games i played that weekend, 10 games were that devpick with a record of 6-4. Only played 2 with bleed_. With 4 total public ctf games played with him during this past month.

Is it possible id software and this community have completely different interests? Who here would rather go to Dallas in August (or ever), when it's 110 degrees, than go somewhere awesome like Seattle, L.A. or San Francisco? In August, the weather is perfect in Seattle. we all know ql failed because of networking issues when the game went open beta and then when it was released, since like 80% of accounts don't have a single online match played.

Thing is riot games, the company behind league of legends, always got it right: server stability has been their #1 priority since closed beta and still is, and also competitive play most probably is their second.

Both games are f2p, ql had a way bigger playerbase when both started, and you know the rest.

The game dies because noobs prefer playing easier games where they can adapt fast rather than getting owned as soon as they spawn with out being able to do two consecutive jumps before they die.

Quake's playerbase is the most elitist in the whole gaming scene, it's just like that, a hard game, it's not for everybody, most people prefer easier games... and they enjoy themselves, nothing wrong with it.

If you disconnect a server before someone joins and they know you don't want to play them-they will chase you all day long and for months. Teams who beat you 8-0 in 10 minutes will constantly join your server asking for scrims every time you set one up even if you are in game. That is besides the point of difficulty. When the game went from closed beta to open beta it got a lot of advertising (for id's standards) and most account registrations are from that time, but because of that there were huge queues to play because of network issues, which lasted for about a week.
From the perspective of a non-quaker, I wouldn't wait a week to play a flash game.
That's why I compared it to QL: LoL's #1 priority is server stability, which is a key aspect in a f2p game, but then again to realize that you have to play that game.

Some time ago it was said here that 80% of accounts don't have a single match played, and the said queuing one of the reasons. The other one is that mandatory match against crash, which was very discouraging for someone who just really wants to try the game.

also the "hard-game" theory is discredited since starcraft bw is miles more difficult than quake yet it was a lot more popular, and lets not even compare QL against sc2.
Advertising and popularity bring players and customers, not the game itself.

ofc there are more reasons, but those 2 I mentioned are why 80% of potential players didn't even care to try this particular game.
Also this is obviously just one side of the coin, the other one being to keep players playing by providing constant updates, streamed events and so on.

In the end where I want to go with this is that id had a great opportunity but wasted it big time. LoL was much smaller than QL but riot games took that opportunity, and now LoL is most probably the most active videogame right now, including WoW and consoles.
