Have never used battle.net, but for duel I would like two or three ladders for varying skill levels:

A bottom ladder for players new to the game (with say less than ten hours played on the account).

A mid skilled ladder for decent/average players (like myself) who can play a decent/solid game, but get destroyed by anyone good/high level.

And a high level ladder for the really good/professional players (from the likes of fndz/offence/doj up to the very best).

Don't do anything fancy with them, just a basic set of ladders no more complex than a paper counterpart.

To keep it even simpler, one could just merge the top two ladders, but I do think it's really important for the new players to have a 'sandbox' to learn the basics in, and not get utterly destroyed for the first month or so playing the game. Some demos on the site of pro level play on each map would be a great (and simple) add on to show new players just how amazing quake can be at the top level.

For me, when I was new to quake and getting destroyed every game, it just made me want to get to the level of the players which were beating me so badly (who weren't very good in the grand scheme of things). When I beat them the level of satisfaction was huge, and a simple ladder system could really help with a sense of accomplishment/achievement within the game.

(I know the ladder system could be abused by tier-slummers etc, but I think that's a bit off-topic and deserves a thread of its own, although could still be a large problem)

you have a lot of different leagues


and in each league you have divisions so that you will compete for ladder position with nor more than 100 people or so but you get matched with all people from your league.
also there is a grand master master league with just the top 200. we dont need that many different leagues but the concept is good

This would be good. 3 ladders is enough, it should also show each players skill rating so they people wont rage quit as much if they start losing. Would also change skill rating from 1-100 to 1-1000 or something.

Then just put the duel detective back in and match people up with others in the same ladder.

Matches should start similar to how it's done in most modern fighting games, meaning that you will see how many skill points your opponent has before the game begins and you can thus get an estimation of his skill and how likely it is for you to beat him. This should make losing less frustrating in many instances and winning more rewarding.

Skill points mean very little because they do not take into consideration the skill of the people you played.

So you have everything to gain and nothing to lose.

you can tell within a few seconds how good someone is. Just the way they execute moves and how they space themselves.

I see, I don't know how exactly it is done in e.g. SF4 since I've never played it online. Just wanted to express that I think the approach is pretty good and you could "just" have a better point system in place then.

Its good in theory and can be as accurate as it is inaccurate, but its a bit like saying if someone has 80% pluses on ESR they are more popular and better than someone with less.

This isn't a good idea imo, unless they add some severe punishment for leavers. If you make every single pub game count, people won't switch when people start raging in a team. Specs also won't want to join a 3v4 game when someone rages because the team of 4 is up 4-0 in CTF, since it would most likely give them a loss. Sure, it's fucking retarded to think like that but a lot of people already take their stats seriously (lolol) and try their hardest to stack teams as much as they can, F3 as soon as the map changes in team games although they just won without a single guy on the team dying once, refuse to join an outnumbered losing team to prevent getting a loss, etc. All these issues will get worse with this system.

You could of course add a separate ladder for people with < 90% finished games, to at least force the ragers to stay in-game.

Even if only 8 teams will be allowed to participate = 8x4 = 32 potential DUEL players already, not even counting those who aren't interested in TDM (e.g. Cypher and prolly few others).

wc3 style leveling ladder would be excellent for such a small playerbase. there should however be a separate 'practise' ladder for total newbs, lets say 10? (or any number) of games and then they are automatically moved to the real ladder. you start leveling, get points for winning, lose points for losing and high lvls cant play vs low lvls. very basic but efficient

I did a bit of investigation but I have some doubts. I read this.

A player starts with level 1 and 0 exp. The exp is regulated by matches results, where a certain quantity is gained or lost. Exp cannot go below zero.

Question: How is the amount of exp gained/lost computed? Constant amount? Based on player level?

The level seems to be just a gimmick, as it is directly regulated by the amount of exp, following this graph:

After a slow start, it sets to 500 exp per level.

Then there is the loss factor, regulated by this function

After level 9, it stays constant to 1. This factor is multiplied with the exp one gains/loses.

From level 4 on, a minimum number of games is expected, or exp is lost. The minimum number follows this graph:


Question: How much exp? Constant? Depends on level?

I think in general, such a system is much more straight forward. I'm planning some write up about the ELO system, as the more I document myself about it, the more I realize it is very tricky to tune and maintain.

skillrating works fine for duel as long as:
- the 2 players have a similar skill(rating)
- don't play more than twice vs each other
- any other anormalies happen (unexpected high loss, etc...)


that means:
- you can't choose your opponent freely
- you can't play more than a limited # of times vs an opponent (or results don't matter anymore after that #)


hope this ladder doesn't evolve into an ztn only ladder
so:
- both players have to choose one map freely from "competitive maps"

How about implementing this system for duels?

Player 1 chooses "ladder match" as his option, and gets sent to an empty duel server if there isn't anyone available to player-match him (same skill rating and hasn't played VS him recently).

That server shows-up in the server browser as we know it right now, but maybe with a special icon to show it's a ladder game, and the player's name blanked out.

2 things can happen:

1) If someone else selects "ladder duel" and gets matched with the guy in-game, that 2nd player automatically connects. At this point if either player leave it's an automatic loss/disconnect.

2) Someone can still join the duel server from the browser menu. The player in the server gets a pop-up asking if he wants to let the 2nd player join, which will also make the match non-ranked.



IMO they should implement the duel ladder like this because we don't know how popular the automatic matching will be. Will it always put the same 2 guys against eachother because no-one uses it? Will it become unused after 2 days because people don't want to wait 3 minutes in a server if there isn't anyone immediately available to match them?

This would combine both systems, and if it turns out that ladders are very popular, you can later mask these "waiting for a 2nd player" ladder matches from the browser.

Possible flaw: Depending on the popularity of this duel ladder, it might be possible for some douchebags to snipe low skill level games to join. If a ladder game takes on average 2 minute to find a 2nd player, it would be easy for Mr. Nutsface to sit in the lobby, refresh like a mad-man and spam the ladder button as soon as he sees a lower ranked ladder match pop up (although the name of the player in the server shouldn't show up, as I said earlier).

clan ladders + duel ladders that display match statistics and history on clan profiles and player profiles


cheaters would be a problem without admins, but worth the cost because having self sustaining ladders would prolong the games life and help it organize and in turn grow

BLC has nice ladder system with tournaments

There's a ladder for every single gametype, with your rank on your profile instead of your tier. The only way to increase your rank is to beat people of similar rank (rank 100 can't play games with rank 50000 and expect to increase theirs).

I would obviously leave the real thinking to more capable minds :>
