It was always about having players from all over the world competing together. If we lose that, we lose a big part of what Quake is.

agreed but the majority playerbase is from europe. If anything the australian players should be picked before any south american players do. Their community is much larger and what 4sg has done is phenomenal. There certainly shouldn't be so many NA players since our scene is one of the smallest on all of ql (other than african and asian servers)

It's a pipe dream, i know. But i like to think the scene is not THAT elitist. We had some pretty exotic players attending big lans in the past, it was always a ton of fun to watch these guys from parts unknown do their thing against well known and established players, even if they got rofflestomped into the ground.

What's so ambigous about the term "top player". Someone who can compete successfully at the top level. Maybe give the current champ a run for his money now and then. For QL, i'd draw the line starting from players like Demon, Madix, Draven, Burned etc.

It's not like Quake requires some extremely rare natural talent to be good at - you need good hand/eye coordination, reflex, proper mindset to keep practicing and a competitive environment to do so. It's all about exposing enough players to the game, the talented ones will pop up sooner or later.

The best compromise would be to have regional online (preferably lan) qualifiers, with the number of slots per region based on that communities size akin to the ESWC of old, and then this sort of topic would be a non-issue. With such a small player-pool for an invite only tournament this is the only sensible way to pick the players.

I don't think it's quite as simple as you claim, a hell of a lot goes into organising a tournament.

I have nothing against invite only tournaments; as long as players have the opportunity to demonstrate they are worthy of an invite through whatever means (past tournament results/online qualifier etc).

In this case with quakecon being so near, the only reasonable thing to do would be to increase the player slots as you suggest.

I strongly disagree with you that saying 16 or 64 players is the same thing; it certainly isn't. That's several thousand pounds worth of computer equipment right off the bat, and more importantly is the timing issues of getting all the games played on time (particularly if it were to be double bracket) and in a quick manner. If the organisers have to hire out the venue for another day then that can also be rather expensive, so there is a bloody big difference between 16 and 64 players if you ask me.

Im not as excited about watching qcon events if its invitational matches only. I like for there to be the possibility of upsets and different strategies from the world collide. What is the story behind this ray stuff, anybody got a cool story? I thought they liked him over at ql. He had a sticky thread for helping people at one time, maybe he an sync was lovers and stuff at one time but ray caught sync humping someone in a demo?

He used to be really helpful, but then when the mods were chosen, he wasn't picked (he told me that Yakumo actually convinced Sync to disregard him as a potential mod, because Sync was considering it). Then he just got super-raged and started doing what he does now.

He even deleted his threads, and got Roxolana (his "loyal" bitch at the time) to delete hers as well. Then he managed to piss off Sync and got permabanned.

He disappeared from the QL forums as soon as the premium update came out, and nobody heard from him for about a year. Then he started posting on ESR, and a little bit on the QL forums, and that essentially brings us to today.

I'm not 100% sure on the order of all this, but all the bans and rage were amusing. Especially since I was told by multiple people that his super-loyal whore, Roxolana, was actually trolling him behind his back.

He had like a million posts on the old forum, he would post in practically every single thread. A lot of his posts were of a very low quality, he could be helpful (his sig had like a ton of links to helpful sites), but he could also be kind of useless/trollish.

Someone who will remain nameless (not yakumo or incu either) told me they could not stand 'raythenoob' on the forums. I had no idea who he was talking about so I kept an eye out. It turned out that this 'raythenoob' was posting so often and so mundanely that I invariably had tuned out his posts as background noise of the forum.

I started to read them I found a lot of the posts to be inaccurate or left of center. I wasn't really sure why this person was so frustrated with ray, and wasn't terribly interested so I pretty much just forgot about it.

When the volunteer forum moderator thing came about I was rather surprised to be selected as I was often critical of the game's development, albeit diplomatically. It wasn't long before some gossip started that raythenoob was upset that he was not selected as a moderator. To be honest I didn't believe this because there was absolutely no reason to expect anyone in particular to be selected as a moderator except for maybe Yak who had written all those guides, made thousands of bug reports, and had countless posts of purely succinct answers to user questions. I don't think he even once expressed a personal opinion on anything. He was like a forum help robot. Perfect for a kind of systematic and balanced enforcement of forum rules. Ray however was unquestionably opinionated, and as far as I know everyone else was all over the map.

It also didn't make sense because if Ray wanted to be helpful, there was no reason why he couldn't continue to do so. I figured people were just ragging on him because he had all those links and things.

I strongly suspect that the person who told me they did not like ray, also talked to sync in an effort to dissuade any ideas of giving ray volunteer moderator status. I thought this would be silly though as ray had many questionable posts, and I have a very hard time believing that someone could single-handedly convince sync of anything.

I don't know if ray was always crazy, or went crazy after that, but the coming months would reveal someone with at least a personality disorder, if not a full blown mental illness. He would criticize Id at every opportunity, go on and on about Incubus, skill-matching, the "death" of the game, and how every update was not up to his expectations. He was angry, malicious, slightly delusional, and definitely misguided. He accused all the moderators of "selling their soul" to Id, he had an endless hatred for anyone who disagreed with him, and a dislike for those that did agree but not enough.

Considering how touchy SyncError can be, I am not surprised at his reaction when he happened upon ray in this state.

Now you can find ray here on ESR with his trademark TL;DR posts (like this one), boundless criticism of Id, perpetual insults, and obsessed fixations on his perceived enemies.

Coming from the voice of experience, only a small handful of players realistically have a shot at winning a 1v1 tournament before it begins. Even if you extended it to 128 people, those very few players are the only ones who realistically have a shot. The rest are just cannon fodder and in it for the experience generally.

I remember shaking hands with players before a game in larger tournaments and saying "good luck," and they would just look at me and say "yea, sure" knowing they were going to get creamed.

This has not changed since I was competing and in fact, has got worse. Less players are playing Quake than back in the day and even fewer are taking it serious.
