people act like this when they really had a hart time playing or if you are in bad shape and they know you personally and envy you ... when they had a hart time playing you and they don't know if they can win again against you and fear losing against you, they don't want to admit they have fear, and instead say you are too bad for them and they don't need to play you ... if you are in bad shape and they know you personally, they also do the same to try to damage you ...
last but not least there are also people who experienced ... and try to do the same action against others, so they don't feel they are not the only ones experiencing this ... but there are always also people who are just too tired to do another match or they don't have time anymore ...

Kind of annoying, pretty much everyone ever's done it to me so I shouldn't feel too bad about it anymore but I did do it yesterday to a nice guy and felt crappy. Nerves were just taking their toll and even if I'd manage to pull off a second win I would've been too stressed out to enjoy it, really sucks for the other guy but... Value rematch opportunity (that you rarely get yourself) over what is pretty much personal (mental) health? Really worth it? Maybe just not being a dick about not giving a rematch should be acceptable.

Oh and really don't care about win or lose, but who on earth ever believes anyone who says that? lol

I agree with you though,I find it difficult to play continuous close games with a "random" that I have no respect (no offense) for whatsoever.My stress levels just go through the roof as most of the games just continue to be a battle for control and the ending score is 15-12 or something similar and where a huge factor (SOMETIMES) were the spawns that x player received in order grab a powerup and ultimately win the match.I cannot play at my 100% in practice games either because if the end score isn't in my favour I become stressed out (even in zotacs etc when I TRY to play at my 100% I still become stressed).I'm not sure if I'm taking the game too seriously or that I'm just competitive by nature.

I guess its just trying to play the game as much as you can and then taking a break before you become over-stressed.

I like ql, but I don't think it was like that in q3

well q3 weapon balance (especially rail) caused control wasnt that one sided as in ql. it was much harder to stay 200/200 even if u controlled both major items.

also the spawn system fucks it up even more for example on ztn u get the upper YA spawn, enemy gets the SG one, from now on you either hiding for 4 minutes or go 0-5 knowing u absolutely have no chance. its just no fun. also when u fragged someone u could expect a few spawnkills almost guarantted now its u _maybe_ get a spawnfrag afterwards or not and the enemy free to go for hiding for minutes

Word, I was afraid to mention the "random" thing but it really does factor in somehow, people you don't know and respect is so different from playing friends and "pros". I've played super close games (lost them all! :D) with a bunch of "pros" and I've gotten absolutely destroyed by some of them and I have to say those are all still some of the most fun games I've ever played, but then there are these random cunts on public who just play like cunts and it's annoying as fuck and no fun regardless if you win or lose by any amount. \:D/

the shit netcode, 10min timelimit and the overpowered rockets make it even worse

getting through-body rail(s) while the other is below 80 stack and u fight over a powerup and potential control of the map, it only increases the rage potential

10min timelimit especially vs +back, makes simple mistakes even more painful and amplifies luck.

going from hero to zero, because of some skilled but yet lucky rockets and inconvenient bounces, doesn’t help either.

at least in q3 u were feeling much more in cotrol of ur destiny. if u saw ur rail crossing enamies' body, it was certainly a hit. The 15 timelimit was reassuring that the better player will eventually win. You would certainly stay for a rematch vs someone that u had a close game. In ql staying is like playing roulete, winning some good money and then put them all in, in next round.

on the flip side, 15 minute games takes up more mental energy than 10 minute games. personally i'm more inclined to play successive games with the current timelimit.

Im quite the opposite, close game or not If I feel bored, impatient, tired, lack of drive, overwhelmed or I have something on my mind I will want a 1-2min break or i'll just leave and do something else. If it was a tournament or ladder that would be a different case, but in regards to pubbing -- people have the choice to just leave if they want.

I can understand that some players may want a break before the next game as it can be an intense game at times,just tell me,its not exactly the hardest thing in the world to do.Anyway,if you are from Canada,you have no idea what the European (more so eastern) mentality is like here.Some players will simply do it because they are selfish themselves and like to cause anger in their opponent as revenge for causing them to have such a close game.

It depends.. if i beat someone I think is better than me, I won't play him again, cuz i wanna savor the moment. Like that time i shit all over dkt and he rage quit, i fucking avoided him for 3 months.

Also, if i nearly lose to someone i hate or someone i deem a faggot scrub, then i wont play him again, I can't risk losing to newbs that will hold it over me (like i held it over dkt)

So basically i just duel my friends who i dont care to lose to, we don't even time, just rush and aim rape. Fuck the items.

It's basically your own problem. Your enemy isn't in any way obligated to play more than he wants. I know it's hard, but try to keep your ego at home when playing practice games. See losing to a player who you deem worse than you as a message that you either need to improve or take it as it is.

You can also turn the psychology around, if he's afraid to play you once more, he acknowedges that you're better and you should be satisfied with that impicit message.

It is my own problem I agree,but I hate when people take advantage of it.I see what you mean by your second point too,however quake is an ego game and I really can't use reverse psychology all the time,especially when the guy says something like "oh u r not my skill level i go play my skill now bb" or some random bullshit like that.

Reasons I quit after one game:

a) I don't want to lose again
b) If I won easily, it was probably a bit boring
c) I won but I know you are much better than me so will probably lose if we played again
d) you've called me: lucky, fag, noob etc..

I stay when:

a) opponent is friendly
b) close game
c) I lose but think I can beat opponent in a rematch

Losing, waiting 2-3 games in spec, only for the dude to leave as your rematch begins. And you can't rage cos he stuck around... Just not for you.

I don't understand why no one stated most obvious answer: many people don't have time to play multiple games. QL is simple entertainment, something to fill 15 minutes or to get a quick break from work, etc. Don't expect people to be committed to the game.
If you want to prove something, then play a tournament, otherwise why you want to be bothered by this at all? Just play and have fun.

I guess it could come from the memories from OSP and whatnot back in the day. Where you could join a server with people on and have everyone sticking around for at least a few games each. Now in quakelive you have "friends list only" duelers, where you're lucky to even get a single game in with someone if you're not on their list. So then it's off to play the spec game on several other servers in hopes of finding a game.

I might if it weren't for the little lags when friends go on/off line. Especially when the system bugs out and shows someone going on/off line several times in under a minute.

most of the duels i rarely play now a days anyway is because i only have time for one or two, when i have time to sit down and play for an hour or two or even more then i'm much more inclined to play team games

Somtimes if I don't like a player I give them hope and take it away in last minute in 2-3 games in a row.

The frist game, the opponent believes he can beat you and wants a rematch (similar to OP mindset)

If he loses the second game like the first, he calls you lucky and still wants a rematch cos he now belives the next game is defintiely his.

If he loses the 3rd game, he gets utterly dejected and this is when you can go for the kill and tell him you were just stringing him along the whole time and then slash quit before he can respond.

I do this all the time in SF, given its impossible to play the game these days without getting abusive messages (usually from germans who think they should be able to beat 20 year vets cos they can do a 7 hit combo and have a superior matchup)

This tactic can backfire if you're not too careful and the other person will truly believe he beat you and send you smug message.

I'm not all bad, if i know im better and the guy isn't a dick, I'll humor him and slip so he can at least not made to feel too bad, I can tell within 30 seconds if I'm gonna win or lose.

P.S.
This tactic does not work vs me because I can recognise the psyche and the gameplay faults behind it in game. But for your average joe.....

No the winner won that map when both of you were trying your hardest, it's best to just play a different map. Unfortunately no one wants to do this because ztn is the only map many players are even remotely competent on

Maybe its just me being new to the game ( < 1yr ), but I don't usually have the endurance to play more than 1 close game in a row without taking a break. I tend to start playing like even more of an idiot when I'm mentally tired, which leads to frustration, which leads to me not wanting to play for a couple of nights.

I'll usually stick around the server and play a couple of maps if its either someone I know and play with all the time (I get less nervous then, so I don't wear out as quickly), or if its someone that just seems like a nice dude (always good to have a friends list filled with people who can give you a close game and not act like an asshole).

well, if he asks me or im in the mood, i might stay but i dont find the general attitude of most ppl in ql that i encounter worth stressing over, so im usually totally indifferent when i say "aah, fuck it, lets do something else" to myself and quit.. i dont really consider ql my priority

People seem to play with specific mindsets. Somebody really focused on learning something would just care about playing and stay. Most of the time however, people need to be playing a friend to not feel ashame/angry about losing. Random pub games are more often a clash of egos, where ppl want to prove themselves. That's exactly where u have these quitters. I recognize myself and many others in all these behaviors, so I guess it's just the psychology of this game.

I've done that to slummers before. Check sv_skillrating after they join and it goes from around 15 all the way up to 56. I just lol and then let the game go on for about 9 and half minutes before I /kickban. Cracks me up.

I usualy disappoint tier slummers in more boring way - just telling them to GTFO and find an opponent with equal skill level. Small addition to HUD helping me with it. But after reading your post I now thinking about upgrading my account from premium to pro and teach tier slummers good manners and sportsmanship in your way. ;)

It depends how good the start is. If they don't get at least one major powerup, you can understand why they choose to spec. But yeah it can be a bit shitty :p

I am one of the biggest douches in all of QL, but I am a good player, and I have my reasons. I'm a nice guy. here's the thing: lots of people (at least in the North American community) are entitled, elitist bandwagoners or cheaters. mid-level or semi-pro players in particular can be irksome. whenever I've beaten chance, griffin, or almost beaten czm, they never complain. yet when nobody knew who I was, if I beat someone like "baxley" or "slugor," they get angry.*

yea I never really bought that much, anyway. I mean I'm sure ZeRo4 was an inspiration for rapha; he was for all of us, along with Cooller and fatal1ty, the three arguably the best ever in Q3 (possibly with czm, cypher, makaveli, fox, socrates, blue, lakerman in there somewhere).

I think rapha was already way better than ZeRo4 when they met, but perhaps ZeRo4 had some bits and pieces of advice inasmuch as mental attitude goes during actual tournament play.

I was watching the stream when this happened. Was pretty fucked up that the tourney organizer was on the server at the time and wouldn't even agree to splitting servers. Nor would Z4 for some reason (probably because he is a huge dick, who acts like, as tyryl said some players do, someone who has no LAN history and has nothing to fall back on).

I also lost a lot of respect for QL.TV watching that stream since their opinion was "Well, its Z4 vs tyryl, so Z4's just going to win so why bother splitting servers?" Someone at QL.TV also got the idea that tyryl was actually purposely increasing his ping (using a restricted speed torrent) such that his ping would appear slightly higher. WTF?

Edit: Forgot to say that any time Zero4 is playing and GreasedScotsman is streaming, its almost unbearable to watch, seeing as how much Greased sucks Z4's dick.

at least they stay for the game.....my usual duel experience is, I join a server of my skill and get either punded -2:100 or in the unlikely event I lead get a disconnect after 3 minutes
