GPU scaling or no scaling at all. Period. Unless you like to have a stretched picture...

Built-in display scaling almost always add input lag and rarely looks as good as GPU scaling.

If you have XP first set your res to 1280x1024 or something like that and the tab will appear (in "adjust the monitor position" or something like that) and then you can revert back to 1080p or w/e you have and it should work.

Might have changed in the new drivers (in Vista/7 they fixed it starting from 275.xx and you don't need to set your res to 4/3 or 5/4 anymore to have the settings available)

But aren't you the one playing on Linux or something though? Drivers don't behave the same at all on 7/XP after all so on Linux it might be different too.

yep, true. i never tried a 120hz lcd on windows. my benq has those pre-configured 4:3/5:4 modes though, i was under the impression that was what everyone else was doing when using non-widescreen modes on a widescreen monitor.

Well, it's not like it's 100% sure that it's gonna add input lag anyway, just a risk that's not worth taking when playing an online FPS, IMO.

Even on Windows GPU scaling isn't flawless (can't speak for ATI but with nVidia it's not always simple), like for example when I force 75hz on a 60hz monitor with custom timings (like 1080p@75hz for example).
What happens in this case is that a lower res @ 75hz won't be scaled but instead will be stretched with black bars around it (nice).

And it works the other way around too, that is running the desktop in 60hz and playing a game with a lower than native res and 75hz=GPU scaling fails in the same way.

It's possible to get 120hz working on linux with enabled gpu scaling by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and adding the following lines to the "Monitor" section:

VertRefresh 120.0
Option "UseEdidFreqs" "no"

or with nvidia-settings gui app

Well, in gui app i can turn full gpu scaling on but instead of 120hz it will show only 60, at least it is so with my monitor and card, thus need for editing xorg.conf to enforce 120hz.

i find again after 2 years that playing 4:3 on wide screen LCD with no bars left and right is best ..

best resolution 5:4 1280x1024 and stretched on 16:10 lcd best

i find it pointless to look at 2 gigantic blackbars on a 27", but i find big fat streched keels quite nice

Don't do 4:3 on 16:9 unless you can't pull 125 frames cause it's just retarded.

I have had a lot of issues with the aspect ratio screwed up so that it fucks up the aiming and everything. The FOV is messed up, the models aren't the right size, I mean it just creates a lot of problems.

Go with native resolution like wolfie said.

1920 x 1080 @ 120 hz is what I now use.

Wide screen is so useful for Quake don't know why all pro players use 4:3 it is dumb.

I aim far better on a 4:3 resolution. I tried going 1920x1080 with a 90 fov but for me the 800x600 w/ 100 fov results in much better aiming.

why lower fov on widescreen? i don't see the logic.. you should increase it a bit instead, or keep the same

because you gain some screensize on the horizontal when using widescreen, you could in theory lower your fov and "see" the same. i think you gain around 10% or so someone else said on esr.

4/3->16/10 = automatic boost of 10
4/3->16/9 = automatic boost of 15

Approx. values but in the 90-110 area I doubt the max difference would exceed +/- 1°

if you lowered the fov like this, it isn't a wonder why you aim worse. Took me about a week or more to feel comfortable again, when i lowered it only from 100 to 95.

nah it was the nearness of everything that improved the aim to be honest.

Before lowering FOV you should check which direction the FOV scales. FOV setting in QL scales vertically so you would just get added image on the side if you kept your FOV. What you are most likely feeling is the difference in dpi vs screen resolution. In my experience I need to double the DPI when I double the amount of pixels in a direction, if I want to get aprox the same mouse feeling.

I reiterate my prior point - 4:3 is a placebo. You'll probably be best off at maximum resolution on 16:9 as you have a higher horizontal FOV (but this does not sacrifice accuracy as a high FOV would on 4:3).

more i see horizontal, less my accuracy is .On 4:3 or 5:4 i dont see that much as on 16:9 so am more sure in feeling of flickshots etc .
