I got two to the left of me which I have been pondering dumping for years.
In light of your terrible crime, I have decided to save them and put them in the attic, but before they go into hibernation, I will run a q3 timedemo on them at 120hz to give them the send off they deserve!
He is kinda right. Nobody would be interested in CRT any more considering there are LCD's that do 120hz out there. He simply won't sell them or have to practically give them away.
It's the same story between buckling springs and mechanical switch keyboards. Both these old technologies superior yet washed away their existence.
Still got 3 17'' CRTs in the house, just in case something serious shows up - can't beat 120hz and perfect colours/response :)
Got a 24'' HP zr24w because I really needed the space (programming - not so much, blender 2.5 (2.49 was good@1024) - hell yes).. FW900 shipped from US to Bulgaria would've cost me something that I could not have spent :(
I would take a 120 hz LCD any day over a 120 hz CRT. LCD image quality and resolutions are superior. No glossy screens. 1920 x 1080 so you can see the enemy far away. Widescreen is more suitable for quake than a square.
Superior rez? Past 24'' - yes. Otherwise - no.
Superior image quality on a 120hz TN **** panel? Dream on...
Superior viewing angles and accurate (enough) colour reproduction? IPS. You get mediocre blacks and off-angle glow, though. Input lag on some new ones is acceptable (zr24w ^_^), refresh rate is nowhere near CRT.
Superior contrast? VA. You also get the best blacks here, however input lag/refresh rates tend to be a bit... *****y. Mediocre viewing angles as well.
Want all of those good things? Plus perfect viewing angles, almost perfect blacks (undetectable once adjusted), sub-ms input lag and response times? Get a CRT. Or SED/AMOLED, once something reasonable comes out (bit skeptical about AMOLED's endurance).
1920x1080 when I can get 1920x1200? Yeah, right.
Widescreen? Last time I checked quake had quite a bit of vertical action in it :)
So, bottom line is - if the 21st century's all about making displays that cut from their CORE FUNCTIONALITY in order to be thin, shiny, or w/e the **** else - no, thanks. I think that's about it for now, hope I didn't rant too much. Still looking for an FW :)
superorir resolution : no, CRT have the biggest resolution in VGA.
Superior viewing angles : rofl hell no, you can't watch an LCD from the sides.
Superior contrast? : hell no
