r_lightmap 1 kinda fixes the color banding but the rest of the colors get fucked up

iirc, it's the texture quality setting in your graphics drivers, reminds me to fix it myself.

r_overbrightbits must be lower than 2!
That will make things much smoother, but some banding will always remain visible, that's an idtech3 limitation.

overbrightbits and mapoverbrightbits are both 1

if its truly a limitation, that's fine, i was just wondering if anyone knew a way to smooth out the gradients

with r_overbrightbits 2, you greatly increase this "effect", but if it's 1 for you, than it's just the lack of the texture-dithering in the engine.

There was an other problem with nvidia cards and quake3, but that was about wrong texture-compression and it's not present in QL iirc.

You can set texture quality to the highest in video-driver's control panel, and you can also disable all texture compression in QL, but you will always gonna see some banding, especially with high picmipped textures.

I'm on CRT and banding is there, it's the game and I'm pretty sure no combination of settings will change that, I know because I sat there with the console guide going through everything that could possibly effect the graphics to no avail.

set your display refresh correctly or set it to 0 in your cfg,
the only other thing that does that besides the refresh rate is r_colorbits <32

you're right, it is. so, now i have to choose between:

more visible color banding

- or -

less visible enemy model

since overbrightbits 1 makes the model bright as fuck. shit sucks. i don't want either..

Relating to the subject: is there any way to get rid of the lights from lamps on walls? I use picmip 6, overbrightbits 0, vertexlighting 0, lightmap 0. It's quite difficult to aim through those lights sometimes.

I will post a ss later if necessary (at work now).

No. While r_vertexligh 0 uses lightmaps indeed, there is a command r_lightmap 1 which loads lightmaps as textures.
