I guess he is comparing to, for ex, ETQW, which ran some key things like the model animations at 30Hz, even if you were refreshing the screen at 125hz.
As for tearing, Carmack has convinced nVidia + AMD to add extensions to allow a "vsync but only if hitting framerate", which I guess he is using in Rage. That means that tearing shouldn't happen too often, unless you're not keeping up with 60fps, where it will tear instead of going at 30fps like old-style vsync.
i know in q3 based games you can feel the differences with fps up to 125+, is it the same for these d3/q4/etc games? i dont really want to get into the whole eye debate, but iirc q3 has movement/mouse/etc all connected with frames so i think even if you could not "see"(or could, idc) the difference in fps, you could "feel" the difference in movement/smoothness of mouse etc
basically, any idea if rage will suck at 60fps as quake3 based games would?
That's what I'm talking about: the game engine "refreshes" itself 60 times/second, while in other games it only happens 30 times/second, and in Q3 you could make it happen 125 times/second, or even more.
I'm bad at explaining this so let someone else do it.

The Size Requirement will hold me back from getting it trough The Pirate Bay, but then Rage will be a shit game compared to any Quake or DooM Title so I won't play it anyway.
I am very excited about this game. A game ID has worked on for 6 years. It's a nice time to play pc games! Starcraft 2, Diablo3 and Rage.
I am not quite sure how Rage is going to be, to me it looks like its going to be a mashup of FPS, RPG and racing? I will trust ID and i am going to play this 100%
Can they compress that much onto a dual-layer dvd or are we just outgrowing optical media completely? This shit's gonna take forever to download, and I don't even have a DVD drive in my PC anyway.
The PC versions megatextures are much larger/more detailed if I recall, largely because of the consoles' limits. I think it was mentioned in all of the interviews Carmack has given.
Pretty sure that Carmack said in the keynote that the PC textures would be the same as the console ones, although they would be looking at maybe having a DLC which enables higher resolution.
25gb is nothing compared to the uncompressed source image sizes.
Optical Media is outdated, a fair few Xbox 360 games have been multiple DVDs already, and Bluray is shit for other reasons. Once Canada and the USA realize that the internet is fucking atrociously shitty over here I'll be welcoming the Digital Distribution age.
1- Download rage from torrent and steal money from id
2 - Complain about quake live because it is shit, and id doesn't have resources to have people working on it to actually make a better system around the game and make it profitable.
3- Carmack says they cant afford to have more people on ql because no monies.
EDIT: QLPrism is just awessome

One or two devs to work at ql AT ALL :). Now they don't have full time dev there, you can see it easy when you look at qlranks.com+the plugin. Elo is integrated from 4-5 people working on it for a few weeks, and they are not full time working on it either.
I don't remember id ever complaining about not having enough money. I'm sure QL doesn't bring in enough to justify work on it, but they still have a fuck ton of money from Doom.
they didn't complain about it, but if you look at Carmack's recent interviews you will understand that id financial status isn't that good, at least this is they way i interpret some of the things he said.
Pirating a game that I have no intention of buying is not going to deprive id of money. I wish it did, but I can live with just having the game for free.
If the multilayer looks good, I will buy it straight away. Otherwise, for me $90 is just too much for a game if it's only for single player. I do have a pro subscription to Quake Live though, and I will be renewing it.
i5 @ 5ghz + 6950 2gb. I hope my system can handle the awesome high resolution textures that have been scaled down massively for Xbox. I know they plan to patch in PC textures but I wouldn't expect any miracles on release day, most of the game's bloated size is likely due to HD cut scenes.

I've just ordered a new one, partly because my current one is on a self destruct course and also due to the new games coming out this year that would probably destroy it, the specs of my current aren't that bad but damn it runs games so poorly now.
New one;
Core i5 2500K 6MB Cache Socket 1155 overclocked.
nVidia GeForce GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5
8GB Corsair DDR3 1600MHz C9 DCM
Asus P8P67 Intel P67 (Socket 1155) Motherboard
Corsair Force Series 3 60GB SATA III 6Gb/s Solid-State Hard Drive
Samsung 1TB Spinpoint F3 32MB Cache SATA II Hard Disk Drive
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium
If this doesnt let me play Rage and BF3 happily with some graphics it will be tantrum time! Pre built system so should have late this week or next once they have finished testing :-D Also means no more fps drops in QL!!!
do you plan to oc that gtx570? if you do be careful those cards blow like pop corn when oced.
Pretty good system overall, but i would have waited 2 more months, it is said that the new AMD HD7k will come out before BF3
Not sure about overclocking the 570, will probably take it under advisement! My current system i dont think will last two more months as its already on its last legs :-)
well when i first built my current machine i bought a budget card, then i upgraded later after the new gpu's came out to have the best for the games i wanted to play ;D, the gtx570 is a really good card anyway and you can always add a second one later on if you need.
They blow if:
a) you don't know what you are doing(gtx570 suffer from weak vrm's(power scheme).
b) you got the referent one, or not referent but still with the stock board design.
Just be careful with the voltage, don't go more than 1.1V. Almost all of the fucked cards where with unlocked voltage(or turned off wattage limitation) and >1.1V :).
I have gtx570, run it @1.063V for a long time, I can say it's safe(860MHz gpu). Tho, right now I use it at 800/1000@1.025V. The card itself got a lot horse power.
You can have luck to get good sample, because mine is @1.025V stock(on gtx gpu voltage vary a lot). If you get one of those 0.95V or even lower... :PP You can get at 1.05V 900-920MHz :D. I wish you luck mate, but you get very good card anyway, no matter what the stock voltage is. Also the card is quiet, not like gtx470/gtx480 :). Byez.
Cheers, i've never tried overclocking my GPU before, perhaps its time to start!
I dont plan to go all out on BF3 as i am a quaker at heart and always will be.. but i do enjoy the game series and i am really hoping to be able to play it on max everything :-)))) rather than rape Quake for every ounce of graphical visibility for competitive play!
That is a really good system you have ordered. Overclocking the 2500k to over 4 ghz on air cooling shouldn't be a problem at all. In retrospect, I would have gone with the 570 or 580 instead of the 6950 simply because of certain bios/hardware issues with certain makes of AMD cards (to do with EDID and 120hz LCD). Nvidia drivers seem to be superior at the moment also. As far as overclocking cards, it's something to offer more benefit later in the cards life IMO unless you have a truly monstrous CPU.
Hi, thanks for the info. The system is coming over clocked when delivered to i think 4-4.5 ghz, not sure what it was exactly good to know it will be alright though. I did read up that the i5 sandybridges are good for overclocking!
Ah ok, it cost the best part of 1k, i really couldnt be bothered building another one, i've been there done that and got several t-shirts and just fancied a hassle free pc this time!
SSD's are too expensive, and technology doesn't seem to be mature yet. I would rather use a good performance HD or in your case load qlive data into a ramdisk.
I got a western digital caviar black 1tb and it's pretty fast, noticeably faster than a "standard" hard disk.
there's a good alternative but only with the intel z68 chipset. you can use a very small and therefore cheapest ssd and enable ssd caching on it which will give you a big performance boost on your regular hard drives and give them near-ssd performance.
don't care about hardware specs, I own a XBox ...
but then again I am not really waiting for this game, really I have had enough of fps for a while, not much has changed since the days of Doom tbh. ... waiting for battlefield 3 and diablo 3 ... but I have no time to play them when they come out =(
