Really looking forward to this game. It looks like a game where they took chances and made it the best game they could instead of the best selling game.

How's the writing? Plot and dialogue was what hooked me up on the original game, and part of what i didn't like about IW. Did they go with the retarded universal ammo thing and castrated inventory managment of IW?

The writing is good. The only issue with dialogue is that mouth animations aren't properly linked to speech. It's a minor issue, but it will bug you a lot at the start.

You will not regret playing it.

Looks good on my PC, but I really hope they improve mouse input support. I'm getting some nasty accel, and (to my knowledge) you can only adjust X and Y sensitivity by clicking on a bar in the options menu.

I'm thinking about hooking up a 360 controller to make it playable :/

Were you playing the leaked beta? I'm not having any mouse issues in the full version, other than x/y sensitivity being off, even when both sensitivity values are equal. Even still, it only took me a few seconds to get the values to feel near-perfect. (fixed in patch)

I'll probably start tweaking my G3's DPI a bit to see if I can get things feeling right.

Was on the fence with this one and ended up buying a new guitar instead, so I can't really afford much right away, but damn this game sounds badass.

How long roughly did it take you to beat it? I've heard 20-40 hours depending, combine that with replay value, wow. You hardly see singleplayer games being able to boast that anymore.

I didn't read all the emails/ebooks in the game, but that alone can probably add another few hours. I think I missed 2 side quests, and it still took about 25 hours.

Ok so I played the first two missions last night.. It's looking good but I'm not a big fan of:

a) dialogue system, it's obviously made for console
b) upgrade GUI, doesn't seem easy to use

I'll keep playing this weekend me thinks.

With regards to sensitivity, on the lowest it's still 2 high.. I guess it's due to DPI rather than windows sensitivity. I'll test later.

Gameplay can be deceiving, since the game can be played so many different ways. There are 3-4 paths/options for getting through each spot. You could probably beat the whole game without firing a shot (not counting boss battles), and you have the option to use lethal or non-lethal weapons.

Yes, you can, every boss can be killed not shooting single bullet at him.

Dunno about that. First guy is possible, but how would you beat the electric chick? Or the final boss?

1st with barrels , 2nd one shoot to big computer (she will die after got shock of electricity), 3rd with takedown (then he jumping in air), 4th just with bullets :/ 4 sniper shots total in that area, or remote c4...

You shouldn't ever need any specific aug at any point, as they always have an alternate way to do things.

While you're definitely right, not having electrical immunity really makes things so much harder on at least two occasions that I'd put it down as a must-have.

What you need for that the armor augmment reduces something like 45% damage didnt notice elec reduction

Immunity to electrical current is the sidestep on the armor tree. Very useful in several places.I found that having the parachute, high jump, heavy lift and electrical immunity will allow you to reach almost any path. Missing one of them can severely limit your choices.

would have been so much nicer if instead killing you it would just damage your augs, with the possibility to further repair it, and emps to temporarily disable some augs or affect their functionality

guess it is pretty hard to come out with nice innovations though =(

a 7-/10 game for me (would have been 6.5 if it wasn't for the name):

-the AI is so so much better than other similar games (mass effect 2), as they tend to not only approach+chase you, but they even surround you altogether.

-although cool at first (despite being the usual "badass" clichè main character) , Jensen ends up being a caricature of himself

-game is repetitive and anonymous: containing some RPG elements I was expecting to have some freedom (like in Mass Effect) or at least decent interaction options with NPCs, yet your chances are so limited it all revolves around finding shops and hidden vents/walls every time you get to a new city (which means two (TWO) times).

-those 30 secs loading screens really do become frustrating after the xxth time you've been told to go to the other part of the city

-stealth sections are nothing but a grid, once you find out where vents are: what pisses me off is that you seem to be forced to do them that way, as the game rewards doing so with more exp, thus praxis points.
AND, if you spend your points accordingly as the game would seem to suggest you for a stealth run, bosses become incredibly frustrating ( try Yelena)

-a few interesting decisions, the "persuasion " parts were very refreshing and funny. Loved the psychological traits box, loved the rocket launcher.

-you can't really decide anything, as your choices won't have any impact at all damn it the same impact they had in Deus Ex 1. Let's not even comment the "three buttons: three different endings!" choice please.

"30 secs loading screens" do you play the console version? Just asking cos on my PC it's more like 5-10secs (no SSD and no RAID)

Bet is your low amount of ram that does it. Some of that ram will be reserved by the gfx card (on my computer the gfx card reserves aprox 2.5gb of my system ram for caching and similar). With only 2gb of ram it will be very limited how much you can load from the HDD before the game must throw away old assets. On my computer the load time is normally 5-10 seconds, occasionally 15 seconds with a normal platter based HDD.

It's deffo the amount of ram that does this, my friend has the same cpu and it takes him 10-15secs. 6gb of RAM though.

I on the other hand got a better CPU but only 4gb.

those waiting times aren't the problem "per se", they do get frustrating once you compare DE:HR graphics with Mass Effect 2 ones (despite me hating Bioware), which are equally beautiful without being so badly optimized

Oh, if that's what you meant then yes I agree. I don't like the mouse input either (even after the patches) and the game isn't too pretty, IMO (it's not horrible either).

I don't have a DX11 GPU though so maybe that changes things.

Mouse input is fine, just need to turn of mouse accel.

Mass effect 2 has very basic graphics, with very little going on in regards to advanced shader effects. Both games are using low res textures, but IMO Deus Ex: HR looks much better in motion than mass effect 2 and has far better artistic quality. Most scenes in Deus Ex: HR are very dark though, which makes the seem less visually spectacular.

Added some screenshots from ME2 and Deus Ex: HR. If you look closely you will notice that there is very little or no DOF effects and the graphics are very simple in ME 2 while Deus Ex: HR has a lot more shader effects. Both games are with max AA turned on, all ingame settings max and 1080p. Afaik Deus Ex likes to rape dual cores, but runs excellent on quad cores. The game seems well optimized for the mid range spectrum and up.

yeah: fact is, without going much further into details, that mass effect has backdrops not interactive enviroments

in ME2 you only get a couple of switches here and there, whilst in DE:HR you get billions of annoying boxes ,

now, even if i can't understand the purpose of them, they're still there, each with its own physics

yet, the result is far from granting such an "interactive enviroment" (try tossing a grenade in an office, nothing happens), as everything seem to be glued down.

yep, DE:HR textures are much better, but the overall graphics "feel" you get in ME2 seems just as good, if not better

I disagree about ME2 being equal to Deus Ex: HR. Few if any games manage to create such a moody atmosphere, feels almost like it could have been taken straight out of bladerunner at times. DOF helps quite a bit in this though, especially when moving. Don't think it is available in DX10. ME2 is very simple, very clean graphics, but not that impressive, especially on planet terrain.

With regards to Mass Effect 2, well, it's maybe "basic" but I still love how it looks and feels, really.

But, just to give an example, I don't like how Crysis looks at all, even though it's technically "impressive" as we all know.

One thing that really bothers me in DE:HR is the poor animations and the lack of a proper lip sync. ME had no issue with that.
The result is that I read the subs instead of looking at the people talking because it really hurts the immersion for me otherwise. Luckily the voice acting is fine so I can live with it.

While I'm not a fan of how DE:HR looks, it still has a good atmosphere although it doesn't really remind me much of Blade Runner.

I've not finished the game yet so I'll wait before judging the story/gameplay/etc though. So far it seems decent but I'm not sure I'd call it the game of the year.

Do you get full SSAO in DX10? This makes a huge difference in the atmosphere with generally more realistic shadows and contrast in lighting. To me the streets of the second city and parts of the first just give me that blade runner feeling at times.

I think so, the SSAO setting is set to "high" here. Shadows and DOF can't go above "normal", however.

The registry tweak works fine btw, I should have looked into it earlier. Makes it a lot more enjoyable since I'm not really playing it stealthy and it was bothering me during the gunfights.

Yeah, 4gigs here and it takes a fucking lifetime to load on a WD Caviar Blue and an i5-750 oc'd to 4ghz.

Worth the wait though.

My FPS is usually between 80fps (large outdoor) and 130fps (small indoor). Running 1080p, all settings maxed.

For removing the laggy feeling, try turning off mouseaccel, see post #38 for how to. Before doing that, the game felt laggy even at 130fps.

After playing through the game, it is easily the front runner for game of the year for me. The mood of the game feels amazing, almost like bladerunner, even if the textures lack a bit in resolution and detail. The artists did a fantastic job here as the graphics enhance the experience.

The ability to approach a room in atleast 3 different ways feels refreshing. You almost always have the option of killing everything in site, silently knocking out all the guards or sneaking past everyone undetected. Your choice of augments has a significant impact on which paths are available to you. Some paths will be off limits to you if you lack the right augment, which makes the upgrade choices matter. I sometimes wish it would have forced you to chose though between two types of augments, instead of allowing you to upgrade everything if you have the praxis points.

Dialogue has impact on which sidequests and what information you have access to. Convincing someone to handover a couple of files through conversation will sometimes open up sidequests. While the main missions are fairly linear, some of the things you do will have a minor impact later on (this especially applies to sidequests). The game is also fairly long, clocking in at between 20 and 40 hours, depending on how you play.

I mostly played it MGS style, by silently knocking out almost all the guards. Rarely did I go all out assault to kill. The consistency of the AI's behavior made it seem like all my screwups were my fault instead of some cheesy AI being unfair.

The most negative aspect of the game was the boss battles, which seemed to take the bad part from Metal Gear series while leaving out the pure genius of the battles vs "The End", "Grey Fox" and similar. Mostly a matter of dumping some ammo or typhoon into the enemy or running around for a while before the boss dies. It also punishes stealth players as they will not have the augments to be effective in combat.

All in all I give the game a 9.5/10. Even with the minor annoyances, this is by far the most fun I have had in a game in the recent years.

I played through the game in three days straight, doing every sidequest, hacking and reading almost every mail, etc... Basically the same way I played the original DX. I almost refuse to play RPGs these days because It brings the OCD and I end up wasting too much time.

Anyway the game is good but I dont think it deserves the praise it gets. It feels almost old school which is great but certainly has many flaws.

The Art Direction by JJB is great and its prolly the second best in a game, after Mirror's Edge! I really liked the Renaissance reference among others.

Some of the game mechanics feel like poor-mans Metal Gear Solid. I played without killing anyone, darts or takedown and after a while it felt like a grind. Whats even worse, the game simply refuses to notice that certain playstyle and the only reward you get is small percent of extra XP.

The environments looked great on the outside and repetitive inside. The interior was usually consisted of offices with computers or storage halls with crates. Every alternative route is in a form of a hidden vent or fire escape stairs. You can mix it up by spending a few points on "Punch Through Wall" upgrade :)

The boss fights were maybe the worst part in the game. You get the standard FPS boss scenario while the game doesent have the best flow and control like the traditional shooters. Whats worse, you are just thrown into the fight without any choice beforehand.

Many developers like to brag about action & consequence system they implemented in their game That is to later be seen in only one or two individual instances and at the same time you can openly steal every NPCs possessions in front of their nose without any repercussions. With the exception of civilians, the NPCs are static! The AI can often be glitchy and throw you off the game. For example you can trigger a conversation with a certain character and he/she will start talking facing the wrong direction...

I hated how the the different endings meant conveniently pressing a different button and ignored you previous reactions throughout the game.

Good game at the first half, little bit settles down at the second half, but still enjoyable.
Map design is really fun, but boss fights are way too easy (the whole game is too easy, but boss-fights are really no challenge at all).
Execution done pretty well, games runs smooth without any problems at all. I really like the graphics and the audio is simply awesome, story is not so deep and it's even dumb sometimes, but it's an action game after all ,and the good atmosphere gives it a nice flow.

But still, I just can't give it more than 7/10 because despite all the hard work and care they put into this title, it's also steals a lot from other titles as well, and if you "take" something to incorporate into your design, you should - at least - improve the thing or try to make it better

You can, but I its impossible without killing the soldiers. Which is a kind of c-c-c-combo breaker if you play non-lethal.

Why would it be impossible?
There are 3 different kind of non-lethal weapons in the game.

Maybe not impossible but still... If I remember correctly I only had tranq rifle and the heavy armored soldiers were a problem since they are dealing most of the damage to the helicopter.
