I think its quite a nice layout, but the rooms are just too big and open (scale them down or add some more pillars/crates etc). Other scale problems are the stair rails on one of the staircases, they are towering above players. Get the info_player_deathmatch entity which represents the hitbox, to get an idea of the scale when you're in the editor.

Also the jump pads go way too high, and lava doesn't cause damage.

What gametype is it intended for?

I know it looks bad, thats why im asking for feedback so I can improve upon it.

Yet, you still haven't answered for what gametype your map is supposed to be made.

this size is useless, unless u make the rooms about 50% smaller and the heights difference about 80% less.

Your guys advice on making things smaller has really helped out and a appreciate it. I was able to do a quick shrink and test on it and low and behold it feels much better. So if I do shrink it up a bit you guys think it has potential or should I move on?

WHAT GAMETYPE

Getting the scale right is a really common issue for new mappers. Don't be disheartened. The actual structures you've got show a good set of basic technical skills and some nice use of gameplay-oriented architecture. However, re-sizing this map may be more of a headache than starting your next.

I tryed to make maps back in the q2 days and had always problems of scaling, do you have any advice in that mater?

These issues generally result from the early blocking out stages. What looks appropriate in the editor can easily be far too big in game. I make a point of getting in game very early on, dropping a few items on the ground, jumping about to get an idea of the scale. If that rocket launcher looks tiny in the surrounding area, it's a good indicator that things are wrong.

The other way would just to plan better and have a good understanding of how many units in the editor is 'too big'. One exercise which you can do is to get hold of the source maps for some maps you know well (I think dm6 and dm7 source files were distributed? or plenty of mappers release their source) and start looking at how many units in size those maps... get an idea of what a small ledge looks like, or a set of steps, or a doorway, or a high ceiling. I remember measuring out the dm6 bridge to rail jump, dm7 steps at quad, the heights of the tiers in cpm3 etc, to get an idea of common construct sizes.

Thanks you guys for all the help, In the next few weeks ill see if i can give you a better version to try. As for gametype I was kinda going for ca or tdm. Maybe even a duel if it had a better back foot to hide and stack up.

Good job so far. I would archive this one, and start a new one with some lessons learned.

^This. It's much easier starting from scratch than to go back and fix any mistakes you've made. Mapping is all about learning lessons. You become a more efficient mapper overtime, making less mistakes. Quake mapping is rather easy though so there's not much involved other than design. In custom games like sc2, you have to script an entirely new game at times. You're on the right track. good luck

what do you know about mapping? i found quake maps to be indefinitely harder to built than whatever i tried with the sc editor, scripts or not.
design is just one thing (and fucking hard to get right), item placement, general flow etc. you have to have an idea about where certain fights are going to take place, what will happen to a team losing control, etc.

a sc2 custom map like the next dota will be 100x harder to make than a quake map.

you have no clue what you're talking about and how much code and work has to be done in gui and through triggers. Spells need to be made, custom-made, not to mention dota has over 100 heroes. It takes a long time to create a map like that. And then there's balancing which takes up even more time. It's like creating a whole new game...

What is this? Ray making a valid point? I guess it wasn't just a rumor that you went and made SC2 maps after you disappeared.

SC mapping is so different form Quake mapping that they can't really be compared much. There's so much that goes on in the meta when mapping for Quake, whereas in SC it's a lot more front-end. That's not to say there isn't any thinking involved in SC mapping, and the good maps are updated constantly with perfect balance in mind, because one unit might be OP in v1.4c, so in 1.4d, that unit will be nerfed.

Those kinds of things, you usually can't know before a lot of people actually play the map and give feedback. There's something similar in Quake mapping, and that is item placement, and geometry. If there's a rail on a ledge at the top of the map that can only be reached by a jumppad, that location is somewhat OP, so it has to be changed, while keeping the balance of the rest of the map intact.

I've made Quake 3 (DM and DF) and SC (BW) maps, and I know what goes into each of them. Just making a map that works is so easy in Quake, but making it look good and play well is probably about level with making a good SC map.

It's pretty easy to make a half decent quake map actually. The most difficult thing about making maps for quake these days is getting people to play them.

if the premium clause would be removed that would make them more popular to play.

I'm no mapper, but it seems to me, it's a dedicated job without one or the other being especially easy.

I mean good maps just make the game more fun to play, even in mods that they aren't meant for!

It looks humongous, colossal, which leads to the second point -> vq3 + HUGE open rooms = no-go

Look at ra3map1 for example, the vq3 physics just don't allow dynamic/entertaining gameplay on that map.
