You would probably be much better off not allowing threads to be filled with memory hungry gifs.

Or placing some code which places them in some kind of hide tag so you physically have to click it of you want to see it. And then load it from the server. Instead of them always displaying and using bandwidth whether you view them or not. ( i often see 2+ meg gifs embedded-its retarded)

On a big thread with say 1500 comments, you probably have at least 3.5 meg of images embedded into the page alone, another 1000k for the text (which is tiny in comparison), +the other stuff you're nearing nearly 4-5 meg a user just on one thread if you have ALL COMMENTS shown.

Disable show all comments at once, hide gifs into an image tag, you'll probably gain many times the performance of what you're doing, even if what you've done has improved things.

Yeah was about to say without knowing your requirements it might not even be an issue. bandwidth is pretty subjective. A lot to me is probably peanuts to some.

db locking up. ultimately, its due to running out of memory before resolving all the queries. however, multiple factors are at play, it is an 8 year old server running 7 year old software for purely non-structured php in a single namespace, without any notion of higher level data structures, ie for each piece of functionality some code is 'included' that wants to make multiple queries in a nested loop to get all it's data

You're not challenging anything, I already said that client side performance and bandwidth are not a problem, not even a concern, so the only solution to your preference to not loading all that shite is for you not to not load all that shite. There are multiple ways to go about that, such as not visiting the site. Let me know if you need any other advice.

It's not advice when you're solely trying to be a smart-arse. My point was that perhaps the user would prefer the ability to hide images, like suggested, until they want/need to see them. You had to turn it into a bitchfest. Good to see you keep it classy.
