If you want to learn Russian best way is to search for a class in Russian in a language-school (if you have one near you), but it is quite expensive.

Other way is to buy some basic learning-books at your local book-store or buy some e-books they often come with a CD or some kind of media stuff where you can learn the language by actually speaking it.

If you don't want to spend money you should simply google "learning Russian for beginners" or "Russian course for beginners", but this will be the hardest way and you will have to go trough several different websites until you get the basics (I tried this with Japanese but after 2-3 different sites i decided to put some money aside for some good self-learning books).

In general I can tell you that learning Russian is not the easiest task but Russian is also not a overly difficult language (Japanese is much more difficult not to talk about Vietnamese or Chinese).

Most schools don't offer it over here though, since its not a very popular choice for students. I dunno how it is overseas. In the US everything is French or Spanish, since those are the only two commonly spoken languages here outside of English.

I took Russian in college.

In my opinion I was still a long way from fluency when I finished all the courses, and now I'm just terrible. At some point it will be vital to converse with it on a regular basis or you will just forget everything.

It helps tremendously to be taught instead of learning on your own though since spoken correctly it is very different from english in terms of its intonation/emphasis.

You can however start by learning the alphabet. For some reason my russian teacher did not allow any printing in her class so we had to write everything in cursive. So you might consider that cursive may be really important, not sure. I believe I can still write in both. I can read it aloud pretty well even if I haven't got a clue what I'm reading. I can also still count to ~1000.

There are some disturbing aspects of the language. For example:

*There are six cases for nouns vs. english's two.

*There are three genders vs. english's one. (Four if you include the plural).

*There are three plurals vs. english's one.

*Russian verbs make use of aspects, perfective and imperfective. English uses modifiers for these, and the verb itself changes very little.

Such as :

"He has been working on it ever since" (imperfect)

"He worked on it and now it's fixed". (perfect)

We still have only three changes to the verb "work", we have "work", "worked" and "working", but their meaning is modified by by words such as "been". In Russian however the word itself will be modified which is a counter-intuitive process for english speakers. It might be a little easier if you are familiar with spanish as it has a similar mechanism.

*Russian makes use of the second person plural in verb tenses.

*There are plenty of irregulars. The one that bothered me a lot was year vs. years. One year is god ('goedt'), 2,3,4 years is goda, 5+ is Let ('liyet'). A totally different word! IIRC 5-20 is 'let' then 21 starts over since it ends with a 1. I didn't have trouble with it, I just found it absurdly illogical. Especially when you consider the plural system in english!

The intonation thing is what throws me off the most, especially when you're asking a question. In a lot of cases the low/high pitch is completely reversed from English, which still feels really counter-intuitive to me. To be fair, I've only been taking the class for a few weeks.

Also, my teacher insists on cursive as well, even though he said that its not very common anymore even in Russia (any Russians care to confirm/deny?). Its driving me nuts because I can barely read it in print so far, much less in his horrible handwriting.

Agree on both points.

I actually found the cursive rather illogical as some of the letters are hard to tell apart. Maybe just nitpicking, but for example capital Z (zeh, not zhe) vs. capital E (eh not yeh). If you were just a little sloppy they would look identical.

It really is!! You almost have to try and talk like a douche to get the emphasis right. Almost always at the beginning of words instead of the end and then they want emphasis on each word not just the first/last or just the last.

I guess that's what gives russians speaking english with an accent that sort of "pushy" quality. I was fortunate to have a russian math teacher with a thick accent shortly after my russian language classes. No one could tell when he was joking and that's the way he liked it.

He offered this extra credit homework to be handed in on the last day of class. Since I had a B and wanted an A I decided to do it. He only gave the info on the day before the last day so I had 2 days to do it in and it was a huge amount of work. I was very proud when I finished it so on the last day of class I asked him what he was going to do with the extra credit works. Conversation went like this:

L: What are you going to do with the extra credit papers when you're done grading them?

T: I have a recycle bin at my house

L: Well is there a chance I could get mine back?

T: What for

L: I worked very hard on it and it would be useful for notes.

T: Tell you what, for you I put it in regular garbage

ahhhhhhhhhhhhahahahahahahah

Try to find a russkiy mir foundation near your city, it's free, im learning russian and i find it demanding, the grammar part can be hard, also about the manuscrite writing my teacher says that ALL people writes in manuscrite. print writing is not the correct way.
