I highly recommend watch more into it. Some situations are more dull and thus there is less to really explain. There is more detail in some of the more key situations.

No offence man, but he's right. You didn't once state what you would expect him to do in a situation or why (if) you were surprised by any of his decisions. You just stated what was going on the screen. For instance when he failed 2 rocketjumps you didn't have any observations on whether that just changed his initial plan - you just commented on his health and armor.

I dont agree with you. He even rewindes at one point to explain why rapha shoots rockets at certain places.

A few things about the match that I think you missed

1:54 Dropping down to tele like that is free dmg for strenx and the tele puts him right back in a better position, then when rapha goes thru tele he flicks right because strenx was above red trying to do dmg.

3:20 when he's spamming grenades on mega and drops on sg, he was about to sandwich strenx between grenades and rockets, which is fkn smart but he hears the mega pickup and leaves.

The thing with using ledges as a barrier, its not really because strenx's lg is better than his, you do that get out of the line of fire when switching weapons or during reloads for rockets. No reason to stand there getting shot when you can't return some dmg.

everything else was pretty good, but play-by-play isn't very useful as far as analysis goes. There's positioning, map control, and knowing the other guys stack based on wheres he's been on the map for things to talk about instead of what items he picked up or hitting rockets which the viewers see themselves.

I want to say I didn't like it, but I dont want to say that because that is rude. Also I like the effort put forth. I think the commentary was overly elementary in most instances

i'd just say if you don't know what exactly someone is doing during a match it's much better to be silent or make no comment instead of guessing or predicting. there's absolutely nothing wrong with some periods of silence throughout a commentary.

also please have default gun position, that is a huge pet peeve of mine.

I would say overall you had some good insight. But for next time, watch the demo at least a few times first, then watch it again doing practice commentary. Once you know the demo's gameplay and know what you're going to say, do the real recording.

even though i'm not a duel player, here are some thoughts that you may consider adding in upcoming releases:

- 1:50 and over: focus in some small things he does, that cost him less than half a second to do but that end up giving him a nice advantage right afterwards and for the whole match.
He went backwards to pick up the grenade launcher, then gets some lg ammo and grenades, and plasma gun.

- 3:10 positioning change is intentional/forced by rapha.

- 3:35 would have been an excellent move by strenx, if he was to take the hp bubble. Was he way over 100 hp to don't rj to pick it up? Probably not.

- 10:37. That's why everyone makes a big deal about strenx's shaft. He got caught off guard and has a much lesser stack, yet he managed to get rapha down to 50hp from 180/87.

- 10:37 Also note that top players dodging is superb. Another example can be found at 12:01

- 13:08 final scoreboard. Accs are in a whole different level, especially considering that they both spam lg to help locking the target faster and their dodging, so in this case mg is a good way to appreciate the big gap that exists between top players and the rest.

- and in general: I'd rather watch a video commentary with play-by-play analysis than listening to someone talking about map control almost exclusively, because that's what casters have been doing since streams (and vent/winamp gtv commentary) started.

the problem is at this level players doesnt really just play the game itself they kinda like playing poker with a lot of leveling, mindgames etc... seeing this without playing for a long time is pretty hard and youll missing out a lot.

id say if u want to stick to with strategical analysis commentary it would be good to grab someone 1600+ points as a side-commentator and asking questions to him etc... i know its not easy to get someone in ql community to do anything =))

also you may want to use timescale like in the esl videos.

avoided to comment (until now), because I would had been too negative. I liked the poker comparison, because that is what it was mostly that game. Rapha was more clutch and calculated better strenx’ s health and the outcome of fights. His risks worked (barely in most cases, cooller would had said "this is rapha"). It wasn’t as much about positioning and rapha building walls between them (it was a pretty standard dm13 game in that regard).

strenx did some clever moves. The jump at tele (like spyyder said) was one. He did good damage there and merit should had be given to him and not to rapha (for that fight).

I am not sure that rapha spammed those rockets at 8:50 (rewind point) to anticipate strenx’s rjs. Seemed to me, at least the first, like a possible strafe route from ya. For the 2nd rocket I am not sure. A better player could clear that up.

not much learning value from this game imo, apart from the importance of reading well opponents health and being clutch.

The first rocket was to hopefully hit him on his way to 50h since he was screaming when we left the rocket fight. It would do 1 of 2 things, hopefully hit and kill him. Or delay him from getting into a position where he could use MG on me while I'm trying to get to upper YA. Secondly, the 2nd rocket was to prevent him from rushing at me if he decided to be very aggressive and make the quick jumps from middle YA to the Upper corridor.

Obviously this portion of the reply isn't to InDepther but I thought you did a pretty decent job with this video, if it was your first time doing a pro game it was pretty decent. My advice to you would be based on your own comment during the video when you mentioned you weren't exactly sure what fight was coming up. You stated you'd only seen the demo 2-3 times. If you want this to be alot better, then take notes of timestamps in which important things happen and mini notes next to them on what should be talked about. Nothing wrong with taking notes and looking at them while doing these. It's not as though anybody sees you doing it anyhow.

I would DEFINITELY say he's not a really good dueler. In fact, I would say he's pretty effing garbage. But he's learning quickly...and he loves the game and the community.

on the quality of the production: I'd prefer to see more in-depth analysis instead of making fun of rapha using MG to kill his opponent while speaking too quickly about unnecessary details at times

on the quality of the analysis: if you use your own or friends demos you might 1) learn a lot about the game quickly, 2) explain stuff better because you know what you're doing
there were a handful of nice insights tho, for example how rapha denies direct fights with the lg

I liked it for OK production quality, good voice and ofc the biggest plus, the intention

look at what evol does, great stuff, but he had to go through 3-5 sessions to have a really good analysis for everyone

The problem with commentating demos of friends, or even me. Nobody watches. I have no clue how to get in contact with that top 10% of the community. And even if I did, they'd probably just kick me from whatever IRC/Mumble server that they where on.

Don't get discouraged. Take everything we throw at you, sit for a while and reflect on it. Then keep going. If you are prettyawesome as your name indicates, you'll pick up quickly, since this is the whole of ESR teaching you. After that and analyzing more demos, you'll start subconsciously trying these moves out when u duel and you'll get better and better.

Thanks. When it comes to dueling, I don't really like it. I'm mainly learning to duel so that I can commentate on it. Once I get to a point where I know those little things to look for, I'll be done dueling for a while.

Duel is only fun when you know what you are doing and planning to do to the enemy. So once you get good at dueling, I expect you to fully enjoy it, because that is how the progression goes.

It's like exercise, no fatty wants to do a pushup, however when they get strong and feeling good, they'll want to do more and more until they get physically fit. Then they'll do exercise all the time since its easier and more fun for them.

The only exceptions are people that want to be good at duel because they idolize other quake pros so they emulate them and try hard to become good, some succeed and learn to love duel, most quit though. And those that just want to be competitive so they pick the hardest route in quake which is duel and strive to get good whether or not they like it.

Once you start to understand duel better you may not want to play anything else.

If you're going to do more pro demos, I would suggest watching them a few times with wallhack on, and write down some notes on different situations before doing the commentary.

Totally agree with this. I got an email for the quake zero beta whenever (Jan 2009 I think), and hadn't played Q3 since 2000. So I hopped in, and most people were playing CA, so I tried it. I was awful, and everyone talked shit, so I was like "fuck this!" and probably went back to play tetris or cs:s or something. Picked it up again about a year later, but mostly played CA. Tried to duel a couple of times, and got 30-0 raped. Did not seem fun. CA was the shit!

I feel like I was improving for a while, learning to strafe jump, aim, learning when to use what weapons, learning the maps, etc. I guess I got to be *ok* in CA (but not great. Maybe skillrating 86, but lol @ skillrating).

So at one point I noticed that I was only good in CA when I would do damage from the side, or in large team battles. I was terrible at engaging 1 on 1. I decided to take up duel, since my skill had plateaued in CA.

I'm still bad at duel, but definitely improving. It takes a lot of mental energy to duel though. I maybe only play duels 2 nights a week. The rest of the time I play TDM if I can, or just FFA, which I love now (and visje's youtube channel has inspired me to become truly great at it).

Anyway, point being, I'm getting way better faster now that I play more duel, TDM and FFA. Also, I can't fucking stand CA anymore. Tried to join a game about a week ago, and it's so goddamn frustrating and retarded. People only play for their own score, and not for a team win. My fav is the guys that say "GO BRIDGE!!!" and then go pillars w/ rail.

Unfortunately there are some things you did not go into as much depth with as you could have but you don't realize these things until you improve your own duel game (imo). Or it is probably just because I know Rapha's playstyle pretty well by now lol.

I haven't watched that many quake live duel analyses so I can't comment on the actual content, but don't you think that there should be some graphical clues for what is ammo, what is clock, what is health and what is armor? Don't you think that you exclude new and inexperienced players from your audience without default hud?

Is this pro level commentary? No. Could rapha or 2gd do better? Probably. Do either of these things matter? Definitely not!

I really enjoyed this. Yeah, it wasn't the BEST analysis you could have done, but it was your first time trying to comment a pro level match and I thought you did a pretty good job. The best part about doing these in my opinion is the fact that you are going to be looking for the parts that don't immediately stick out to the novice player, and your ability to analyze situations in game will improve, allowing you to do a better job in the future.

I really look forward to more of these, and I hope a few naysayers don't keep you from doing it.

its just when he attempting to "break the code" of the highest skill, sometimes its visible he dont see those depths what an average veteran player would see, and the understanding of the high skill players are even deeper...
i think its ok, since the video aimed toward other beginners, if they learn something from it its all good and reached its purpose. its just it would be more fortunate to analyze other (own or lower skilld) matches as its just as educational but mistakes would be way less numerous.

novice compared to other new players? i don't agree. Most players never even reach this kid's playing level. The majority never get out of tier 2,3 or just outright quit. the tier 4 elite does not make up the majority in this game, they comprise maybe 10% of the total population and that's evidenced every time an elite whines he doens't have a tier to play in to excuse his tierslumming behavior on lower tiered servers.

in regards to prettyawesome's video. There's a reason he didn't get into more detail and he mentions that within the first minute of the video: Because he didn't want to make 2 videos (over 2 parts), hence the condensed version (so it fits into a 15 min video).

what is this indepth strategy analysis you keep speaking of. There's no need for that at the moment. There is however, a need to get new players into the game by teaching them basic dueling strategies. Prettyawesome is doing just that. Overtime he will get even better at them. If you don't have the patience to wait for someone else to do better, than perhaps you can do it better yourself?

What the majority of criticism is getting at is that high-level commentary requires high-level understanding.

You'd be better off commentating your own games, pointing out mistakes that you do (which don't happen in rapha vs strenx, but do happen when newbies are playing).
