You are wrong, apple has advanced computing and the populations general use of high powered computer devices, far more than any other company.

Too bad they're now just selling the same hardware at well above market value. If not for Windows forcing them to switch, Apple users would still be suffering under that horrible system.

They sold a lot of overpriced shit, sure. The cost in consumer quality has been immense, and many actual quality companies have suffered simply due to brand recognition - an issue increased by the fact that the people attracted to the brand beforehand were using such a limited platform that they had no way of knowing what the difference was to begin with.

He improved on many of the things that microsoft did wrong. Yes he did somewhat simplify computers, but that opened the door to new customers, niche customers perhaps, but a niche that does have a valid point in a mac's true power.

Overall, you can't possibly knock the iphone, ipod or ipad which have only helped spur on more technology.

He didn't just open the door to new customers, but he caused a mainstream adoption of the products that they have no business using, which damaged the existing market. Innovation and quality were damaged across the board, and the people are too uninformed to even know it.

Capacitive touchscreens have been around for a long, long time. The concepts have been around since the late 1960's, iirc from a lecture at uni. Steve Jobs and his boffins didn't create anything ground-breaking when they released the first iphone with a capacitive touch screen. All they did was patent a few gestures which are based upon differentiating the capacitance change across the screen against time. All of that has been done before, srsly.

In general, I have absolutely no interest in using a phone to browse the web anyway; and have no desire for a touch screen; they annoy the hell out of me for typing as there is no tactile feel.

Calls, texts and emails are all that I need. If I wanted to browse the web on a portable device I would either use a netbook or an ipad; certainly not a phone, the screen is far too small for decent browsing.

With regards to the iphone; all of the different technologies were just beginning to be at the right level of maturity/cost to create this sort of product. There would be no iphone without ARM's excellent processors and the improvements in Memory Chip NAND density.

And a stylus for a PDA is ideal as well. I don't see your problem with using a stylus in the first place.

No, I don't. Admittedly,the original iPod was a very nice design, however the rio karma and other players at the time had better features, capacity and battery life. The only reason the iPod won was due to their marketing might.

As for any other innovations, please tell. Mac osx is just unix with a fancy ui and nothing more, so you can forget mentioning anything os based. As for the mouse, it has been around for a hell of a lt longer than apple has. And apples hardware has nearly always been behind other competitors (except the 80's). The power pc architecture was woefully underpowered.

The only thing that apple has done that is truly innovative is it's marketing and branding; they are perhaps the best in the world at it. As for hardware, software or any of their products:

I agree with your point on the powerpc based macs being very stable. You have to admit, they are getting less and less stable, more buggy and error prone with with each OS and the move over to x86 instruction set cpu's. You can't deny that.

Also, the only reason that macs were more stable than most pc's was due to the hardware control and integration with its software. Come on, absolute stability/reliability with such a controlled package is mandatory and is present on essentially every closed hardware device out their. Consoles, phones, macs etc. It's nothing special; it's a bare fucking requirement.

There weren't many alternatives; certainly not anything as convenient or as (relatively) cheap. But there were/are alternatives :)

Also, as I have studied electronics for the past four years, I'm well aware of the difficulties involved in producing a reliable/stable system of that complexity :) You have to understand that it is a minimum requirement of a closed hardware/software product, and from a technological standpoint anything less is a complete and utter failure. Being a business failure due to it is another matter though, look at the 360 :(

Believe it or not, it's actually the software which is the hardest bit to get right rather than the hardware. It's not unusual to hear the software costing more to develop than the hardware from the ground up. Most of apple's core components have been bought in (CPU's/RAM/GFX etc) and the other hardware which wasn't (custom motherboards for the imac/powermac etc) are outsourced to other companies. Apple merely integrates all these outsourced components into an aesthetically pleasing package which fits in line with their core branding.

When a company has a lot of money to spend on R&D and the correct facilities; it really isn't as hard as you think to create these sort of products. You can buy in the expertise, the experience, everything. Apple's marketing/branding is what allowed them to do that. Remember the 1984 advert at the Superbowl, a prominent example :P

I hope what you're saying is that "good product + good marketing = success", where it doesn't matter whether the good product is developed 100% from scratch or from acquired components. Because we all know we have capitalism, and you so you can buy anything. The challenge is to actually design a system first, and then you know what to buy and what to develop. Everyone seems to agree Apple has good marketing, but you make it seem like they've never done key development of the parts, yet right before that, you say the key component is software. Which apple has done in house more than anyone, and thanks to Jobs. Objective-C->Cocoa->OSX is a huge development. More over, since they started doing portable electronics, a ton of their hardware is developed in-house, to the microchip level.

I agree on your points and uderstand your attitude towards smartphones. But you're exaggerating. Where I live, a cellphone plan with internet access is abut 10€ more expensive, making it 240€/2 years, including that you get the mobile cheaper.

Also, for "browsing" the web you can use mobile optimized sites (which most big portals/news sites/emails/banks/etc provide) with much less data to transfer. I could use a very decent HSDPA connection with up to 7,2 MBit/s (around 240kb/s download in reality) but the omnipresent EDGE network (384kbit/s) is totally enough for news, email and maps.

When I talk about "computing", I was talking about hardware. Apple did their damage to computer literacy as well, but they have been extremely damaging to hardware quality.

Apple is about the only company who cares to actually customize the hardware to suit their needs instead of just using whatever OEM is offering to them (i.e. SSD in Macbook Air or their chips in iOS devices).
Also, damage to computer literacy MUST happen if we hope to have any progress. Because then computer developers will understand that their computers have to learn to solve many problems instead of just relaying them to users. Computers are just some intermediate devices in the process of accomplishing something. For example, if I am physicist, I can use computer to write a program that models certain physical situation, and if I can just come to the computer, draw a molecular structure of some substance and it will show me what will be the properties of a solid body made from that substance be, then it will allow me to get a scientific result much faster than e.g. now when I have to first learn about all the scientific programming libraries there are, then learn about distributing computing and how to optimize algorithms for parallel processing, then speding a couple of years to actually write and debug and test the program, and then get some 10GB file that I have to process and analyze for another year to get any meaningful result.
When computer engineers will realize that computers must not require computer literacy, and start making such computers, the whole progress of humanity will dramatically speed up.

That would be great, but Apple supports the MARKETING side of computers, not the advancement. All of their selling points are gimmicks, and luxury - no actual innovation. It hasn't forced the industry to do anything, other than rely on cheap goods for high price, and selling things as a brand, rather than on functionality.

first one is not tricky at all, as that's exactly what they did. i don't know what you're getting at, but 'renaissance' specifically implies rejuvenation of something that already exists, which i guess would happen if you buy a bunch of licenses, R&D and manufacturing companies and consequently develop the fastest versions of chips

and everything is about profit, it doesn't dismiss the fact that you have to make a case for an original design in the patent application. of course you could say this can be both a result of having a design (innovation) but also the skill for making the case (legal 'marketing'), however, the first is a prerequisite, and in the second they have been lacking compared to Microsoft and a plethora of other predatory companies, especially for the most part of the 30 years they have been at it.

As someone who worked in a mobile phone shop for 3 years, I can assure you Apple changed the smartphone industry too, Windows mobile and Symbian were terrible.

They also helped with the massive increase in mobile browsing, which in turn probably helped boost the rollout (or support) of 3g/HSPDA.

I class the smart phones and tablets as forms of computers.

OSX is user friendly unix, that is all. You can do everything on OSX that you can do on any nix system. How it's dumbed down is beyond me, you guys must never have used it before in your life. (As in, tried to do actual work, design, music or development).

With regards to pricing, apple is starting to become cheaper than the competitors, for example the macbook air (cheapest in the ultrabook range that is not a netbook) or the ipad (cheapest tablet that is actually usable in some way)

like final cut pro x, which has not much left to still be considered as a professional software. same will happen with logic pro. same idea like the macbook air.

You should also realize that in professional areas there is really a lot of unnecessary crap that doesn't make sense at all, and people only keep up with it because they think professional must mean complex, so they learn all that stuff because "it's all serious and professional, not some kid toys", etc. And what Apple wants to do is to blow away that crap and let people work with simple tools without unnecessary nonsensical complexity added on top of them.

you don't have to have final cut pro to compete. premiere is just as good. And in fact, many of the stock programs on a mac like imovie are better equipped to handle a variety of tasks all at once.

you can look up what they did to final cut pro, which is important to a lot of producers.

i'm all with workflow etc. but sometimes these additional crap is the only thing that distinguishes 2 applications.


they also want a fully tranposing to software downloads (cloudish so to say), which doesn't sound bad at first, but in the end there will be no software distributors anymore(jobs), you wont get a physical copy anymore, no more independent shops which can help you to buy the right software, etc..
all under the rainbow of "more comfort", but it's again more about control and money via direct distribution

Neither the old Quadra 840av and the G4 i worked on have basically NEVER crashed. I have a lot of respect for the older Apple products.

I haven't got that much experience on OSX, but I haven't had a crash or a major slow down in the last 2/3 months since I got my air. Everything is instant, everything works.

About Apple being shit, well I dunno why that many graphic-artists and web-designers use Apple-PC and will always put a Apple above a Windows... Maybe because vector-editing programs were first designer for APPLE and not for Windows and Apple still has a small lead when it comes to such things???

I don't have any Apple product and don't need one, but I still have a huge respect for the company.

Apple laptops in particular are so outrageously good compared to normal ones. Sure there are great laptops for professionals that can best the Apple ones, but they're gonna be even more expensive.

I've just recently been getting on the apple bandwagon having bought an iPad 2 a bit ago, purchasing an iPhone 4s on the 14th and wanting to buy a mac (27inch screeny jobby) I love the quality of the products and also ease of use. And I don't find the pricing bad at all. I paid 400 quid for this iPad 2 and the other offerings at the time being between 350-500 and just weren't as good. In regards to the iPhone there's been alot of competition especially recently but it still comes out on top. There's a few others I've been looking at such as samsung galaxy s 2 but for me they are just too big (this isn't related to last point just my personal preference)

In terms of power don't all industry professionals use macs anyway? Such as graphics artists etc

My sister has a s2, I wasn't that impressed with the quality, it's plastic as hell. I like the screen size though, doesn't feel much bigger than an iPhone.

No, it used to be that way because of the availability of the editing programs on Windows (lack thereof).

Nowadays there are a lot of professional artists using Windows, all the important tools are available (with the exception of Final Cut Pro for video editing but since version X came out a lot of video editors are slowly making the transition to Adobe Premiere which is available on both OS X and Windows).
3D modeling for games and movies is done on Windows a lot, in fact 3DS Max is not available on OS X.

Lots of choice for artists today, which is great in my humble opinion. Shame that Adobe programs are not available on Linux, which would even improve the freedom of choice.

Products aside Apple's best quality is their ability to name simply. Why the feck do all other mobile operators use crazy names, numbers & versions which never leaves me clear what I'm getting? And with PCs why would I want to research which graphics card the 4200 or 4400 is best value? And so on and so forth...

But before that he set the standards for computing by introducing type-faces to modern-day computers as well as introducing the NeXT computer of which is the base of every modern day OSX computer. He's also co-founded Pixar of which introduced the first computer generated (CG) movie; Toy Story.

Think that's more than enough. He pretty much invented and inspired todays generation by a very strong, but small bit.

You don't see any 'it shops' running on macs they are simply not value for money. Certainly not on the server side of things, though they are leading the consumable device market.

Also, all those iPhone features were in other phones only nominally, they weren't really usable. I.e. sure, there were web browsers, but could you look up something in wikipedia in 10 seconds? Nope, it would take you 10 seconds only to launch that browser. By that time, everyone will get bored and give up. So effectively, even web browsing was unavailable on phones before the iPhone, because it was not more efficient than to use a normal computer.
Same with many other features... it's not actually important at all, what exactly can you do on a mobile device, the important thing is why would you do it on a phone instead of PC.

Now you understand one simple thing: all the features in a phone, except the actual phone functionality, are also present on other devices that we all have - on computers, for example. So it's not enough for some feature to be merely present on a device. That feature should also be powerful enough that it's actually effective to use a phone for it instead of PC. Otherwise, there's no point in having that feature, as it will sit there unused.
For example, if a phone has a browser, it also has to offer me a good reason, why the hell I'd want to use browser in my phone instead of getting to a normal PC with big screen and using browser there, on PC.
But of course, imbeciles are not capable of understanding such things, they think only in terms of "yes/no", all they can understand is if there an "X" or "V" in the table, just like in that article. So in primitive imbecilic terms, in which that article is written, of course that Nokia is better than iPhone.

History professors will tell you to read a novel from the Restoration period if you want to understand the morals, politics and folkways from that period.
Likewise, all the films that Pixar produced (Toy Story, Bug's Life, Monsters Inc., Incredibles, Finding Nemo, etc.) already entered the cultural collective memory. Jobs' vision in how digital technology can produce art will live longer than any of his software/hardware legacy.

Yes you are missing something. In 1986 nobody really considered that a small art house producing purely digital feature length motion pictures could EVER compete with major studio productions. Steve Jobs did.
Considering Steve Jobs' almost obsessive, near pathological micromanaging style and relentless attention to detail, do you really think he simply bought his shares of Pixar and just did nothing? Remember he was booted from Apple for many years during his tenure at Pixar. Jobs never sits on his hands. He took a huge risk buying Pixar who really only produced several "products" in reality. He made damn sure they were perfect, then like Jobs magic -- sold Pixar to Disney in 2006 "at a valuation of $7.4 billion"[wiki].
Crazy grossing, brilliantly creative works from such a tiny company. Sounds like Jobs' thumbprint.

You are missing something. He's been making key directorial and other lower level decisions in productions, sometimes pushing completely new and unpopular ideas through that turned out very well. So, otherwise, he's being very closely involved in the making of those movies, pretty much like with Apple.

It is not weird that no one really knows about his involvement with Pixar, most people don't know jack shit about any subject beyond 2 headlines. However, your last sentence is kind of ridiculous. Pixar movies are great and all, but they are like a lot of other stuff out there. Allowing my grandfather to be able to Skype with me, read news, play chess, etc, while he didn't even know how to operate a mouse is fundamentally changing the world much more than a cool story can.

I have a macbook from 2008 and Apple actually shot themselves in the foot with this one because its so well built I won't need a new one for years, whereas other laptops I have owned from Asus/Toshiba & Compaq where falling to peices and looked like shit after only a year or so.

If you use your laptop to browse the net only then get a macbook pro, it can last you 5+ years!

Might aswell buy an ipad if you are just going to browse and get drunk and laid with the money you save.

If its not hard why do you fail then? Show me were I "praise him to no end" or "shit on his career" for example. You are the one thinking in a black-or-white manner in this case. Only because one got respect for Jobs work that doesn't mean that he's being deified.

It's because there is really a very strict boundary (actually, two boundaries) that separates haters from lovers, and you can't be anywhere in the middle.
First of all, there are "usual" people who are not into tech and stuff, and they like Apple because it gives them exactly something that's better than alternatives.
Second, there are "tech-nerds", usually these are people who are interested in technology, but don't really have any understanding of it, they aren't enginners, they don't have PhD's, etc, so they are just same "usual" people, but know a lot of nerd words and think that they are not some dumb masses because of that. They have tech-shifted world-view not because of any reasoning behind it, but just because their snobism, they think that being familiar with technology and interperting it as some purpose towards which world should progress, makes them belong to some elite club above those dumb masses, which then gives them impression that they know better than all the other stupid sheep. They hate Apple because Apple is working at a level above technology, so they don't understand why their products are so popular while not being tech-focused, so, as humans usually do when they face non-understandable phenomenon, they invent some religious arguments that other people follow Apple like some religion, that Apple uses some godly marketing powers to dumb people down, and things like that.
And then there are some actually smart people who also love Apple because they can see that Apple understood that primary goals of people are not technological and technology only provides building blocks to empower a design that solves those goals. I.e. people don't want to "copy files", they want to, for example, "take some photos with a phone and then look at them from my PC". Apple is basing all their products on design that takes such goals in mind and then chooses what technologies should they combine to fulfill those goals. That's also why some popular techs may be absent from Apple products - it's because they were not required by the design. Aforementioned "tech-nerds" cannot understand it and it makes them rage, because they think that the more technologies there is in the product, the better. But from Apple's point of view, product is like a building with technologies serving as its bricks, and it's just silly to say that the more bricks there is in a building, the better the building is.
