We use something special, but i don't remember the name.

for failed boot sectors and stuff: testdisk

for deleted files in windows: recuva (but filenames might have been lost so go for deep search + judge by file sizes etc..)

i've used recuva briefly. it's ok.

make sure you don't write anything to the drive when want to recover something else it might get overwritten...

PC inspector File Recovery was used at work.

Recuva worked well for me when i needed it, i've got some others on a dvd at home somewhere, i'll see what they're called if you have any probs with recuva.
