I realize that it's important to hear the ingame sounds (and I really liked how you put so much emphasize on analyzing what noctis hears), but I think you should lower the ingame sound during a fight.


edit: Maybe use wh and/or an aerial view more often.
For example, in the situation when rapha spammed grenades to the center YA, dropped down and stole the RA, it would be even better if we could see him doing it.

For an easy quality improvement I suggest compressing the ingame sound when you talk. Can help you with that if you want.

I don't quite understand what you mean. What I do right now is record the whole game (+sound) uncompressed, then record the commentary seperately and arrange it all in sony vegas . Then I render everything uncompressed from vegas and finally compress it altogether.

compression/ducking... when you talk the ingame sound is compressed...lower volume..then when u stop talking the ingame sound is normal volume again... its used in tv and radio.

Ok, got it. If that's possible to do, taking into account how I'm currently doing the recording, please explain it to me.

I don't know about video editing, but the steps needed should be totally possible. You have to be able to 1) extract the ingame sound and the commentary into two audio files and 2) later insert the new sound file.

If you don't have any DAW software, I'd suggest Reaper. Its actually too powerful for what you're going to do, but its free, small, easy and comes with a compressor you can use.

I made a preset file: compressorpreset.RPP

If you insert the two soundfiles, the volume on track 1 should be lowered when there is output on track 2. You can alter the compressor (reacomp) settings on track 1 to specify when the effect should kick in (threshold), how fast (attack) and how strong (ratio). The input meter on the compressor is coming from track 2. After you're finished you can render the project and everybody can fully understand you.

Its totally possible tho that something like this is builtin into vegas somewhere :) But even this way should only take ~10 minutes once set up.

I liked it. Liked the separate cfgs for the povs, and good use of rewind and wh. In game sounds were to loud making it hard to hear you in some parts.

really really good, almost made me want to play again. hoping to see more of these, next time just listen to it when it's done and adjust the volume levels where needed. can't think of much more really, maybe show a picture or short video of the players when introducing them for production value and say how the tournament went on for the winner.

Some of your sentences were eye opening, like "ah, so that is what good players think/do, jeez...". And this, for someone that wants to improve is water in the desert, one just wants more.

Only thing I would alter is what scowl said in his first post, the sounds during the fight are louder than your voice, either put up your microphone's volume or lower the game-sounds a bit.

I'd love to, however, the reason I've chosen a dm13 match is that it simply goes at a much slower pace and you can actually, for the most part, comment on it in real time. On the fast maps there is like 10 times more stuff going and I would want to say roughly 10 times more things. So I would have to pause constantly and this would make the video very long and aswell a little boring.
I think it's good if you give people a chance to think about what's happening and make them understand the decisions players take and at the same time keep up the flow of the game so that it's not a purely scientifical analysis but at the same time an interesting quake game you're watching :P

Maybe what I could do is analyse parts of games that are particulary interesting. For example something like the ending of that cypher-cooller aerowalk game at quakecon (there are no demos of that, right?).

I doubt it'll be boring if you maintain the quality like this one. As long as its interesting knowledge, its not boring. And imo its exactly what new (even seasoned) players need. A good game properly explained. Like the beginning of the game where you stopped and talked about raphas jump sound and the possible spawns. If you take the pause to explain a thought process so accurately I wouldn't mind if an aero commentary takes 30 minutes or more.

Commentarys like these are really rare (like rapha commenting his own game) and far from common knowledge. This is actually something you can show to everyone who doesn't know/understand why this game is (or should be) played on big esport events.

One thing that stood out for me:

At 9:27 (13:36 youtube time) you said that noctis made use of the fact that he played very passive the last 3 minutes and didn't try to steal any items, that's why he decided to go for the MH.

While in fact, just 1 minute before that, noctis had already tried to get the MH at 8:22 (12:18 youtube time) and died there.

At 8:57 (13:06 youtube time) noctis again checks for the MH and sees that rapha takes it. More importantly, he shoots a rocket and thus, rapha knows that noctis still has the MH timed.

Nevertheless, noctis goes for the MH at 9:27 (and he knows that rapha knows that he has it timed). Plus, noctis is in the most obvious part of the map; rapha has probably checked all other parts of the map already.

So, I'm wondering:

1) Why did noctis go for the MH? He must have known that it's incredibly risky, given that he had died at the exact same spot just 1 minute ago and knowing that rapha is aware that
a) noctis has the MH time
b) noctis has to be somwhere in the area of MH/SG/PG.


And
2) Why didn't rapha check for the MH?

He had probably already checked all other places on the map and he knows that noctis has the MH timed. Did he think that it was just too risky and noctis wouldn't comit such a risk at a tied game with 1 minute left?

But what better option did rapha have, besides denying the MH? He already had 200 armor, so getting any additional armors isn't really necessary. He might have had the aim of denying every single armor from noctis and trying to catch him going for an armor.

But still: rapha knew that noctis had the MH timed, was near the MH and probably didn't have an exact time on any armors.


The whole situation seems really odd to me and it bascially decided the game, because the MH enabled noctis to get the deciding frag.

how about lowering in-game sounds

my only suggestion is that you should do ztn. It's the most played map by far, but somehow it isn't in current map pools

noctis commits to a pg fight. This is pretty risky and I don't personally like this situation because its an seems like an all in gamble for he needs to kill rapha or severely injure him to the point that rapha won't challenge RA. And the reason I say this is because if noctis decided to pull back, by the time he gets RL.. rapha would already have RA and would have a better chance of getting mega than noctis (which seems self evident, but could be the reasoning behind noctis not wanting to pull back). But I suppose the situation I described above is probably better than what actually happened, for it seemed** like noctis jumped into the corner allowing rapha to deal a lot of free damage. I also found it interesting that rapha didn't charge in for the kill(for I know a lot of people who would), but it makes a lot of sense to solidify control by denying RA and mega. In addition if noctis had died at lg, chances are he would have spawned on the other side of the map near mega or RA so there would have been decent chance of noctis being able to steal RA/mega or at least get weapons/RL position.

This seemed odd to me -- for noctis seemed to jump to RL willynilly. So yeah he knows rapha is getting RA so this is the best chance to get RA. And maybe I am just a newb but i've died a few times going to RL willynilly as the opponent is getting RA(and knows im up there). For the opponent usually shoots at the bridge holes in hopes of hitting me, and usually I get hit by splash with the occasional pop to lava lol. Although to be fair rapha did spam, but he was going for the cover his butt/hope to get the opponent as he tries to peek for a rocket spam to tele.

- notctis shoots a rocket after killing rapha with lg. So im thinking he either shot that rocket for 3 reasons (or 4 if notctis likes to corpse)

1.) old information thinking if rapha were to turn the corner the rocket splash would get him

4.) corpsing


Now if he was thinking of #2, he quickly recovered his error, for he may have gotten lucky and hit rapha spawning there (if he moved back abit). But 1 rocket won't kill him, and if rapha did spawn there the likely hood of rapha getting that YA and running away successfully is more possible than noctis hitting 2 rockets and even has the worst case scenario rapha could spawn just after the first rocket spam and possibly getting away unscathed. In addition options 1,3,4 after the fact (the kill) are pretty much useless imo, and are loss of potential spawn spamming. For noctis has 3 spawns he could shoot just after he jumps towards YA; The spawns being top corner, below LGYA and above RA. (And in fact rapha did spawn top corner spawn)

My guess is rapha notices noctis is on the middle level, and can potentially go to RL(which is generally a dominant position) so he takes the gamble knowing he has to turn things around and create more opportunities for himself.

- noctis makes the right move by rjing backwards quickly(giving rapha no time to rain down any rockets. So logically the this idea doesn't seem that flawed, just noctis corrected quickly and rapha missed his rocket(I might add it was pretty smart of rapha to wait the 1-2 secs for noctis's move before shooting his rocket, which was fairly close. Now rapha is screwed and tries to get away by dropping down and running, which doesn't work.

Ending note: seemed like some situations seemed to repeat, flip-flopping between players. One example is where you see noctis going for RL after spawning, and then falling down below to LGYA (although in this case he survived rapha did not)

1:39(youtube time) - agree, it's just a bad idea from noctis. Whether or not rapha should have pushed in for the frag is actually a very interesting question. I'm pretty sure if he wanted to, he could have gotten it. However he would have taken more damage and if noctis spawned center map he could be the one who would collect all items and stay in control after dieing. By letting him live rapha is guaranteed that noctis has almost nothing and he himself can collect all major items.

2:09(youtube time) - rapha is in the process of dropping through the hole and running to red when noctis runs across the bridge. I don't know if noctis was aware of that but at least there was no way rapha could have spammed right then :p

(4:06 youtube) - I wouldn't overthink it, I'd guess it's just a brainfart from noctis.

5:25 youtube) - think that depends on how good the rocketjump is. If he managed to jump directly through the arch I don't think rapha could have caught him.

7:53 youtube) - this is a situation that happens in so many dm13 games, I'm sure noctis didn't even need to think about what to do. I'm pretty sure he would have dodged raphas rocket too if it was more accurate.

rapha's frags (noctis mistakes):

1st - noctis was in the most obvious place and unaware rapha might just come in + he had his back turned. looked like he didn't have a plan like if he should challenge rapha or not with even stacks

2nd - ??? 150 vs 350 you surely can outshaft him ok

3rd - again too inpatient this time with getting rockets, noctis couldve defended himself pretty efficiently with plasma too. and when he ran to rockets he ran in a straight line and exposed himself and took pg vs lg duel where rapha hit 60% and noctis 5% :l if he went to rockets he could've ran so that rapha didnt hit any lg and would've got out alive

3rd - would've been somewhat significant moment if he actually took the mega (why not??), he could've survived and atleast denied rapha 100hp. instead noctis skillfully dodged landing on the mega.

4th - he was raging and rapha was on the row so he did pretty much a noob mistake taking the spawn right in front of him, perfectly timed. (rjing to lg corridor from mega is an obvious move from rapha) instead noctis should've taken a deep breath for some seconds and then take the spawn at sg while rapha was at the 50hp, take the shards and health and go from there with 150hp.

5th - was actually okish except for the jump at the end which was an easy finish for rapha, i would've taken the duel too because noctis had a huge advantage

6th - yeah he surely is gonna keep rapha away with one rocket and 100hp. noctis should have escaped while rapha was taking items and not even bother with lg ya leave alone staying there until rapha comes to him. or he could've predicted where rapha would come and gambled a bit, instead he stayed on the middle so that no matter where rapha came he would be trapped.

nicely done otherwise but noctis' and rapha's nicks dont include capital letters =)

3rd - I think he didn't realize mega was up in the first place but if he took it he probably would have got pinned inside the mega box by raphas shaft and would have died even faster. So I don't think it made a difference. Just shouldn't have gone to mega in the first place.

i doubt he would've died faster with extra 100hp but maybe not dealt as much damage who knows. anyway if he stole the mega that would mean insta 100hp loss for rapha (can't remember his stack atm though, if he had +100hp) PLUS the plasma damage noctis could deliver. i would've stayed at the spot he is at 12:06 behind the corner because you could either
a) steal mega if rapha opts to chase you (which he surely won't he won't risk the mega)
b) seek your way to lg ya or plasma jumppad
c) +back at the shotgun and lower corridors

keep it up :)

Summing up the game, I feel like noctis started the game with high confidence, got the first frag by some bold decisions and then played really strong in control. He caught rapha off guard several times and just played really good overall.

But as soon as rapha got the upper hand, noctis seemed really unsure what to do. He never really had a chance to gain back control (except the moment when rapha RJed into his LG at the LG-YA, but noctis screwed this up by jumping towards rapha).

So, what's the reason for this difference? Did noctis lose his confidence when rapha started a comeback in a seemingly already won game? Was noctis not experienced enough at playing out of control against such a strong upponent? Was this maybe due to a lack of practicing against players of the highest calibre and only raping midskilled players in preparation of the tournament?

also i know as u mentioned that the complexity of this increases exponentially as u transition into even just the faster duel maps, but im just wondering how tough something like this would be for a tdm (4v4 preferably but even 2v2) game. would be awesome to have this sort of analysis for a tdm game cos i think the biggest reason people find tdm boring is their inability to relate what they see from one persons pov to how the team strategy plays out.

I'm no tdm expert in any regard, but I pretty much think it's all about controlling (and timing) main weapons (rail/lg), red/mega and killing stuff. Oh, also "go to quad" or "go to bs" :X

i dont think u understood my point. i wasnt looking for tdm tips xD. i was requesting a similar analysis like he did for duel, applied to tdm. this is probably very hard to do for an entire game, but you could do what day 9 does for instance, and instead of analyzing the entire game focus on one particular aspect or event. analyze what went on in the micro situation in terms of what players did and mistakes they made or alternatives or just why what they did was awesome. and then relate the relevance of that event to the larger scheme of things.

for instance, you could zero in on one particular quad set up on a particular map, look at how the individual players set themselves up for quad, the locations they chose, the items they picked up - essentially all their decisions say 45 seconds before quad, then look at how they set themselves up as a team, what role each player was supposed to play - such as who was lined up to take the powerup itself, who was doing protection, who was scouting for possible enemy attack on quad etc. and then look at how that scheme worked for the team, who might have made mistakes that allowed an enemy steal. things like that.

I'm no duel expert in any regard, but I pretty much think it's all about controlling (and timing) main weapons (rail/lg), red/mega and killing stuff. Oh, and minus the "go to quad" or "go to bs" and there are also 3 players less on both teams. Seems too simple to me.
