Quake is pretty dead. I've been playing it semi-regularly but there are tons of empty channels at all times. I'd even be so bold to say its current player base is smaller than the foreign Brood War scene.

Its current player base is probably in the hundreds. It is 100% dead, and will never be revived. It's just too dated and bland compared to anything new, and rage/id/etc won't make a new one that's worth a crap.

playerbase has been low like this whole year. it died down dramatically after they introduced the fail subscription model. in order for quake live to get a decent size community, the subscription model has to change. but surprisingly, even with such a low activity level (i'd say 100-500 players) streams this year have been getting 5-7k concurrent viewers. I remember some russian lan last summer had 5.5k concurrent viewers and it was all in russian (no english). Maybe this is the first game where there are more people watching than actually playing XD
