I am actually not sure what brand of the tower, power supply or ram the reseller is using, meaning those are approximate numbers.

Any suggestions for a different pre-built setup that would fit the need better? I'm thinking about buying a samsung 2233rz to that setup, which I understand means that I need to play with 1680 x 1050 native resolution to avoid lags, or is that a misconception?

I play at non-native resolutions and so do plenty of people including a lot of pros. It's the refresh rate you should be concerned about. Resolution has no effect on input lag.

Playing in native resolution does matter on LCDs, unless you're 100% sure it's your GPU doing the upscaling, display built-in scaling is very likely to add some lag (could very well be totally negligible though)

just because pros play on non native resolutions doesn't mean it doesn't affect the game. Most of the time they are just used to their 800res on a CRT so they use that on LCDs at tournaments even tho the native resolution is better in more than one way. I highly recommend using native resolution for almost everything on a LCD especially quake

Eh, perhaps. It's not so much the resolution that I'm used to though so much as the aspect ratio. Playing on 16:10 for quake just never felt quite right. Perhaps I need to mess around with fov settings as well to get the right feel.

I don't like the ASRock mobo or the fact that you don't know the brand of power supply. GEIL is meh honestly, but not horribad. The rest of it looks ok apart from the fact that your hard drive is only rocking 32MB of cache. If you're willing to swing 450-500 euro I'd even be willing to price a rig out for you with the exchange rate. 330 is barely enough to work with and if you're looking to play other games besides that, don't waste your time or your money. Hell, when the current gen consoles came out, they cost more than that. Man up, buy something decent.

who cares about the hard drive's cache? it might be less bursty but it's a mechanical drive anyway. sustained read speed and iops are still going to be meh. that said, I don't personally like WD as I've had more failures with their drives than anybody else, and that's kinda their low-end line there. there's not a good reason not to get a 1TB or so disk with a 32MB cache when they're selling for $50-60, unless you have some very specific needs.

the rest of the stuff is pretty much what I would say; screw ASRock, screw GeIL, screw no-name PSUs.

With it being a mechanical drive it could use all the help it can get. I've not really had too many issues with WD, but I have found Seagate to be much more reliable. My next upgrade is going to be to solid state personally. They just need to get a little bigger and a little cheaper yet before I bite.

That is in regards to using a smaller tower? Not necessarily, as it is pretty much only for Quakelive.

You don't need a X4 for Quakelive, too much power and heat for nothing, and btw, without a custom cooler and a decent mainboard, you can't even overclock that thing properly.

I would go with a small (low noise) Sandy Bridge setup:)

-Well if you are thinking about H61, you can pick up an mATX board for about ~50€ and that will do, but if you want Asrock, that's the board.
-If you want a mainboard what you can upgrade with a stronger CPU with 4-8 cores in the future (I stick to Asrock for you), you can pick the ASRock P67 Pro3 (B3) for ~86€. It's only for a single card setup, but can easily OC the 2500K stable.
-If you want a CrossFire/SLI setup in the future, get the ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 for ~120€ (best price/performance ratio, it's basically the Fatality board without Fatality and the hype)

-If you download movies or other games you gonna need an extra HDD but if you only play QL, why would you need more space?

A Sandy Bridge G840-850 (70-80€) would be more than enough for QuakeLive and if you want an ATI card, I would pick the HD6750-70 (80-90€ ), (or for 30€ more, you can pick the i3-2100 for the CPU, that one will do very well in most games)

About the PSU you linked,: I never heard of it, I would not trust it, but I can't recommend anything until I know if you want to upgrade or not, but good and strong PSU like the ARCTIC COOLING Fusion 550R is only 42€ in the shop you linked. A g840+6770 would be fine with a 300W PSU)

It was an important question because the single-core performance of the X4-840 is not that great at all.

How would overclocking relate to the speed a single core of a 4 x cpu? That cpu should easily be fast enough without being overclocked, I guess.

I bought a 2nd cheap PC for general use before almost 2 years for about 200€ and installed and pld ql there and it seemed as good as my main PC (about 1000€). Of course, I wasn't expecting to have any problems and didn't look for any. Maybe, I missed something (didn't pld long). I am sure I didn't buy it cheap also.

don't u have any friends with some hardware knowledge? I think ESR is best for advice on high end rigs and other things (like advice on specific applications etc, is even better than google). My only advice is to go for Intel and not AMD. AMD used to be the better one, but things have changed and Intel is back on top for many years now.

What you are saying is true, and I would do exactly the same, but there are some differences.

1, He can't/don't want to assemble the PC himself, so ebay is not an option sadly:(, he wants it assembled and ready ----> hardwareversand.de

2, - It's gonna be a gamer rig after all, not just for Quakelive, but for other games.

3, Yes the C3 stepping Phenom is cheap and fast, but the 840 needs OC to really shine, which makes a lot of heat, ergo it requires a custom cooler + hardware skills.

its nothing wrong with stuckin between i3 2120 and X4 840.

Both are really good budget setups.

But for an AMD System you have to pay around 50-60€ less for alot perfomance.
Budgetwise I would stick to AMD 840 + MSI c45-770/870(45€) + 4 Gb Kingston = 150€
The i3 2120 system performs better i3-2120(110-115€ + ASRock P67 Pro3(85€) + 4gb = 210€

The i3-2120 is without a doubt faster...but anyway you can play everything with an AMD 840 system.

yea there are a lot of happened since in our private talks, first I "built" an i3-2100+HD6850 box into a SG05 mini-itx case, but in my last message, I was trying to convince him to buy something bigger what he could upgrade (I know that an i3/i5 mini-itx gamer monster is possible but it would be way too much money from that shop and they don't even shell good parts for that kind of system)

So I proposed the ASRock 870 Extreme3 R2.0 +X4-840 into a BitFenix Merc Alpha (it's a good case for 33€ imo) and a HD6750 or 6770.
That would do QuakeLive well, and if he finds an other more demanding game what he wants to play, he just adds a second HD6750/6770 and/or another 2x2GB ram. And that mainboard can also take Bulldozers, so there is a room for an upgrade everywhere.

So yea, tbh I'm a Sandy Bridge fan and would buy nothing else, but the X4 is a lot cheaper indeed and still delivers:) (some:p).


ps.: that review doesn't shows the minimum frame-rates, so it's worthless imo, and the high settings in the games where the Sandys are really shine:).

If you can get a copy of thts months custom pc, they have a decent article on the performance of all budget CPUs on the Market right now.

Your better off just getting a core 2duo, a 30 pound gigabyte motherboard and 2gb of cheap generic DDR 2 ram.

For ql you really don't need a powerful graphics card, infact the onboard gpu on amd s new CPUs will be enough for ql, but you will have to get ddr3 ram, more expensive motherboard etc.

Also, i can't stress enough the importance of a good monitor for quake live. You really, really need 120hz refresh rate to play this game. It makes such a massive difference. I would strongly recommend to go and get a decent CRT, or budget permitting a 120hz LCD monitor. If you don't have a 120hz monitor with this pc for ql, you have just wasted all your money for no gain imo.

Just get a cheap second hand hd4870 or an 8800gt/gtx, more thanh enough power for ql at a cheap price.

As for a power supply, it's really worth buying a brand name. Cheap generic ones can be amazingly inefficient, have a higher failure rate and have the potential to damage your components as quite often the power rails don't even match the atx spec.......
