it's not like every virgin media customer is warping, it's just the case in "some" areas (where the isp is selling more contracts than it should, tech problems?, faulty hardware/infrastructure?)

Ziggo here aswell (previously Multikabel and it was Quicknet in the late 90's), north-holland, no warp whatsoever :)

Kabel Deutschland causes warping for me at times when a lot of their customers are online. its not a problem in all areas since its a due to a lack of ressources in certain areas

My city only has two ISP's, and the cable one is absolute shit in terms of a reliable connection. Tons of jitter, packet loss, basically Quake became unplayable two years back on it. People wouldn't duel me because of the warping. All my friends have the same ISP and I checked their lagometers, same thing.

I went to DSL and had a super solid connection. Speeds are probably a quarter of what I got on Cable, but now I can play games without problems.

I've heard about Cable being a shitty connection, but it could be the ISP. I think Cable companies try to pump out their connection to as many customers as possible, ignoring if it's going to be a reliable connection. 99% of users only care about download speed anyways

I guess i'm one of the lucky ones, i have Virgin Media cable and i don't warp, my netgraph occasionally looks a little shaky but having asked on servers it hasnt resulted in warping.

Now should i disable my LAN adapter and use a Wifi USB dongle and using the same Virgin Media connection, i then warp like a bastard, i wouldnt be surprised if some people were doing it on purpose as its like having a permanent battlesuit.

I would never cheat on purpose, even as much as using a wifi adapter to induce a fake warp, I just wanted to prove not all cases of warping are because of a bad ISP :-)

when i warp it is usually almost unplayable, for me cause it means my ping (real ping not the one on the scoreboard) is jumping between 50 and 500. its not just aim that suffers, you cannot do any rocket jumps etc and you cant get used to it any way like high ping players can.

Yes it is. Often cable customers share the same line, which of course has only one frequency spectrum. With ADSL you have your own line, hence no overlapping.

i dont see what the multiplex-technique in use has to do with the issue. its just a matter of demand i guess.
even a line using FDM does not have an infinitely large offerable load.

Considering your knowledge of multiplexing, it may well be you know a lot more about broadband technologies than I do. As far as I understand, the problem with cable, warp and inconsistent down- / uploadrates is the following:

Hypothetically, in a very bad scenario, there is one TV cable (no fibre or other shit, just TV copper), which is multiplexed to 100 flats. Of those flats, 50 have a cable internet subscription. If all of those 50 flats with cable internet start full-speed uploading, the total amount of bandwidth provided by the 5-65 MHz Upstream corridor may not be enough to serve the combined Upstream demand. The result will be inconsistent upstream rates, and gamers experience lags and high latency.

[Edit] You are completely right. It is a matter of demand. And the reason why this usually won't happen to ADSL is because the bottleneck of combined bandwidth with ADSL is the fibre line leaving the access concentrator. With cable, the bottleneck is a copper TV cable.

my OP was just trying to point out that maybe all ISPs in question were using cable, hadn't read every reply and wasn't sure if anyone had mentioned it yet.

i'd guess its an infrastrucural issue, the technology being relatively new, compared to alternative ISP-technologies.
i've also heard that there are several QoS problems with 'cable deutschland/unitiy media' aswell, specifically when users try to phone via skype; the two problems very well may have the same cause (my 2 cents).

what i want to add is just one thing, imo it makes almost no sense to single out isps here. the problem one person might have with virgin media for example does say nothing about what someone else (even a block away) will experience.

my best internet connection ever was a 16mbit cable by unitymedia, i pinged 5-6ms to heise.de (and those quake severs which were located in frankfurt) and i never had any trouble with warp or loss of connection.

the bottleneck with a cable modem is still the HFC node uplink. you are confusing physical limitations with virtual limitations.

there are many installations which provide multiple HFC channels per area, and this doesn't get into channel bonding and the general wider bandwidth of DOCSIS 3. but, yes, with DOCSIS 1.1 or 2, you may be sharing a 6MHz wide channel among your neighbors (maybe it's 5MHz or something else in Europe? can't remember). this is not inherently bad. most networking resources are managed this way. it's also not really multiplexing at least on the downstream because it's broadcast technology, not point to point.

this does cause issues rather often in oversold regions, but it should be noted that this is not necessarily the only cause of jitter and warping issues in QL. there are lots of other causes.

I'm a Virgin Media Broadband user, and luckily I suffer no warp, but sometimes at what could be considered as peak user times my connection does seem somewhat less stable than usual.

My virgin media connection sucks. I'm just waiting for BT infinity to come to my area. My connection drops out, I get lag spikes at peak times and packet loss.

I would swap to ADSL but I would only get 8 meg right now. Let's hope the tories improve the broadband here as they are promising!

Virgin is probably fine if you live in the suberbs but in the Centre of town, it's probably worth avoiding..

You can't really list "Ziggo" as an ISP as it's a company that aquired other ISP's over the last few years and a few of these ISP's have shitty hardware etc.

Warpers are just as bad as cheaters for the cummunity. Takes away all the fun in playing. I dont really think i can describe how much i loath to play against people who warp.

Warpers, -20 nudgers and cheaters can just gtfo already.

I feel bad about warping. It can win you games against much better opponents, and I totally understand if someone does not want to play a warper.

But as many have said, DSL offers are way less convenient (I could pay 133% to get 40% of the bandwidth). Considering I work from home from time to time, this is not an easy choice. QL is an important hobby to me, but still a hobby.

The French ISP Numéricable can have the same issues in some places too (especially on sunday afternoons/evenings) because they're selling 100mb nets (and 5mb up) to up to 50 customers (and possibly more) on a single 200mb link.
