aw cmon guys don't hate, i play a real guitar, and i find this pretty awesome to get anyone started in guitar!

If someone isn't interested enough in learning an instrument without the help of a videogame than that's pretty sad.

i don't know if it's sad, but it definitely seems pretty misguided. if you aren't willing to actually learn an instrument, then how can you reasonably say you're interested in that particular instrument?

it seems more likely you're interested in some social connotations relating to it, like popularity or prestige.

i've got a friend who just recently expressed an interest in Rocksmith. he's exactly the type of guy to take up some new endeavour once per week and by the next he won't even remember the name of it. this includes guitar. he's got two of them, but hasn't so much as learned basic chords, really, and he's had these things for years, but suddenly Rocksmith is gonna make it EASY and fun!!!! yeah, really it'll end up just being another piece of junk broken families stow away in the corner of the basement after a few months. it doesn't seem interesting as a video game, and as a musical education tool, it would seem to fail on nearly every account.

as far as guitar itself goes, if you want to "learn" the instrument, that includes a lot of boring repetition and music theory. this doesn't mean you can't learn in ways that are engaging and rewarding, but this video game is not that. that very friend i mentioned said to me that he just wanted to learn to play "some songs" without all of the hassle, at which point i asked him why, then, he didn't just play Rockband or get Reason or Fruity Loops (he actually just came off of a fruity loops binge about a couple months ago, lol) or something. his response? yeah, but they don't have a real guitar!!! uh, so? you can still play songs. if you want to play guitar, play guitar.

I agree only if you're right about this game not being a way to learn to play guitar.

Maybe we should know more examples of people who have tried the game with the purpose of learning guitar.

I'm gonna have sooo much fun reading threads here and there. Kids are gonna buy cheap guitars, be your standard kids who can't be arsed to do anything and i'll charge them 30bucks to change their strings and tweak a few things to make the goddamn guitar actually playable.

Not gonna bother trying it though, moaned for years at gh/rb because shit felt completely wrong until gh3/rb2 ( there are still a few fuckups and parts that make no sense to anyone who actually plays guitar ), they probably have their transcriptions messed up as well.

I assume everyone on the internet on a gaming related forum is a 15 year old boy who really wants to be a pro gamer. So thus when I see a comment relating to a pro's success, it's pretty general for me to guess jealousy is behind it. Why the fuck else would you knock someone who made a career off of their success? I don't think that most people make unprovoked jests, there's usually something behind them that provokes it.

But really though, why? The guy made the absolute most of his position and is in a good place for it. I'm not defending him or whatever, I just really want to know whats behind it. There always has to be some form of motive, conscious or subconscious.

Well, imo, playing an instrument is fun, but learning how to play one often is not. So making the learning fun is a great idea.

If someone wants to learn algebra and they have two options, sit in a class and listen then do exercises, or play an interactive maths game. Are you going to complain if they choose the game?

Our techniques of education are so boring, there's still a lot that can be done to make learning fun. I'm not saying that this game is the solution to learning guitar, but it could be a start.

i won't be surprised if this is how most people will start getting into playing music instruments in the future. much of learning is repetition, and gauging your ability and giving you material to practice is what goes on in most classes. trying to automate it seems only natural and is just a question of time.
