um no. more like 40k console players that will most likely forget about doom4 as soon as call of duty 2k13 and gears of war 6 come out. then the year after, they will get call of duty 2k14 and halo 7. an endless cycle of rehashes garbage, and they eat it up. meanwhile games that are vastly different like doom4 or rage are forgotten within weeks of release
yup. didnt even break 500k for consoles. meanwhile gears 3 had 3 million copies sold in the first 3 days. battlefield later this month, then call of duty next month and uncharted 3. rage probably wont even break 1 million. 90% of the console population will forget about rage and switch over to the next "pro" shooterz (cod and battlefield).
wouldnt be so bad if the net wasnt full of retards, nancies didnt kill my journal and give me the monies, net would have reverse engineered windows 7 tweak sites n the whole ball game, the p0rt gets a new b0x
console gamers dont care for graphics nor do most pc gamers, being able to run it at hi end is just good to brag about for benchmark scores. having pixel perfect screens takes away some of the games atmosphere
and its just all the retard middleclass n00bz who think PC should be able to run all current games at hi end, current games needing phuture spec to run at hi end is part of the PC gaming world and always has been and always will be
bad and not advertised games don't sell.
Idk about rage since I haven't played it nor know how is it doing sell-wise, but we all acknowledge that id hasn't fully developed one decent game since 1999.
they start idtech4 from scratch in 2001/2 and been talking shit and excuses since, compared to full redevelopement of strreamlining of id technologies,. work on the next few is tweaks
so all of id will not be talking about anything much else, except for next gen consoles at interviews and quakecon etc from now on
With console sales dropping/stagnating, and PC sales increasing, the joke will be on him. They can blame the market, piracy, reviewers, or whatever else they want, but it's not stopping other PC developers from actually making good PC games, and selling a ton of copies.
Valve just got done selling more than 4 million copies of Portal 2 on consoles, and even more on PC.
Surely the console sales dropping is due to Sony and Microsoft giving longer shelf lives to the current consoles. Sony have stated about 10 years for the ps3 and I'd imagine Microsoft were expecting the same from the xbox 360. So sales will gradually slow down.
Sales peaked a while back, so they pretty much already have as many console sales as they can ever expect to get. PC game sales are still steadily rising, and I've read that they should be higher than console sales by 2014.
By which time they will be about ready to release the next gen consoles. See what happens next year when nintendo release their new console. It also seems more and more developers are going multi format (which people argue slows down the pc market) even blizzard thinking about releasing diablo 3 on consoles.
Funny cos last month I was looking into 3d flash dev and the away 3d/molehill stuff and I thought it looked cool, but I was like, too bad UDK/UT3 is not on it, then I read this.
Epic will have the editor and everything, phyiscs, all the good stuff. Im sure a few people have been coding and spending a lot of time and money on.
Now its garbage compared to what epic will deliver.
Probably bad news for unity too as its ace was the unity webplayer, but if UDK goes into flash then GG.
pcs still have the most advanced hardware technology for the biggest potential in graphics.
and they are also the furthest evolved in multiplayers. and have the most advanced online communities.
both of these things are the future.
i mean multiplayers and graphics are what push innovation in video games. Its the future. and pc's are still the best platform for evolving both.
John carmack said at quakecon that quakelive is a business failure because the learning curve is too high. That said it all for me. So he said the learning curve is too high. Also implying he doesn't feel like doing anything to ensure fair play or competitive matches. As if to say thats not his job. Showing how out of touch with the times he is.
Or maybe its because if he does regulate fair play, he can't say the learning curve is too high anymore. He won't be able to blame quakelives failure on his superior genius anymore. well fuck him. I didn';t like the look on his face when he wanswered questions about quakelive. In fact i wanted to punch him in his fucking face for it.
the guy is also out of touch with real life apparenlty so there is no hope for him. Since the learning curve in real life sports, like golf for example, is much greater. Hes selling his soul for money plain and simple, and its been obvious since ql came out of beta, and I hope he burns for it.
i can't wait till more people on consoles figure out how to bootleg singleplayer games, and till the majority prefer to go online multiplayers. So these singplayers and bs 4 man coop dogshit overhyped recycled games get tossed into the garbage can and forgotten about. for the good of e-sports and video games in general.
its just too easy to put out dogshit on the consoles and get rich. thats the problem right now. and you can't blame these companies for going for the money. But gaming experiences in general are really De-evolving.
and another thing hes so out of touch with and doesn't understand is that....
people would buy any pos you put out on the pc that has the latest graphics technology. Just to play a game on the latest graphics technology.
thats what crysis fkd up on, and thats what ID is totally clueless on. and thats what EA DICE understands.
because thats what people build and spend 1000s of dollars on their pc and graphics cards for. and we will always be paying customers. right now the frostbite engine is where its at. all this id tech 5 and all these new games.. are all garbage. They all still look like 10 year old recycled engines, with recycled game play and plots. even crysis 2 wasn't fooling anybody, by running like shit and looking blurry. we all knew it wasn't dx 11 instantly. pc users are not dumb. but a game like bc2 or bf3. we are all going to go run out and support and pre-order just for these reasons. and right now ea dice has sealed a market on pc for themselves, they have a following that is not going anywhere. because people are still paying 1000s of dollars on their pcs, and on top of EA dice using the latest graphics pc hardware technology in their games for windows, they also always try to balance their multiplayers for a better gaming experience, and improving upon this on every release in their series since the first battlefield.
John Carmack is just a fkn idiot. you can tell hes bitter and miserable now from these interviews... maybe hes a real asshole. maybe thats why his employees sabatoged quakelive on purpose. just to get back at him for being a a clueless dickhead boss? I dunno I think he might be kind of egotistical and arrogant when you look at quakelive. how he blames the learning curve, yet doesn't want to anything about it. just like a veteran player. I dunno, i just have the urge to punch him for being such an ingorant tool who sold us all out.
we made him. we made ID. and he turned his back on us all now. because his own stubborn arrogance and greed.
yeah, I mean, seriously who nowadays sits down and plays games with his mouse and keyboard. I mean, come on, this is so hard. I rather sit down with my inferior console hit 10% accuracy and drive in a random vehicle to shoot whores and shit.
God I hate console players. The only consoles I owned was the first playstation and all I did was play resident evil and tony hawks skater. Those were awesome games for consoles. /rant. :D
Probably the best minds of the game development industry (thousand of studios with designers, artists, programmers, etc) are creating games for the consoles. There are shit load of awesome games out there what you are missing, and those games are a zillion times better than RE on the PS1.
For hardcore gamers, playing on the PC is the best experience indeed, but don't hate what you don't know, that's stupid:)
the only + side for consoles is that u can easily sit yourself with some friends infront of 'em and enjoy some neat splitscreen pvp or coop matches at various games.
and thats entirely the pc game developers fault. they fail to understand the importance of social elements (and i dont mean online stored achievements by that) they fail to understand what made NFS2 so popular back then and why world of warcraft has 12mio subscribers.
the last thing i think about when a friends comes by is "lets sit together infront of my pc and play something" .. because thats not even possible even tho the plattform has 10x the power any console has and it would be easy as fuck to implement it into the games (remember settlers 2 splitscreen anyone with 2 mouses? nfs2-3? various old shooters?).
currently pc gaming is about 2 things: offline solo play (u grow out of that at some point, its a thing of the past really) and nerdy online play like mmorpg.
but the 2 things that are popular right now are: offline multiplay (wii anyone? pc could do that easily), easy access shorttime online multiplay (various attempts on pc that mostly suck and still are used cause of high demand - steam *cough*)
really.. i have that 40" tv plugged into my pc and if i would be able to connect 2 mice and 2 keyboards (even that is possible) and play say rage or diablo3 on the tv in coop i'd absolutly get friends or even my gf sitting infront of that and have some great fun.
but instead im forced to play it alone like a nerd and get the feeling ive waisted time that i could've spend elsewhere. this is all so 1990'ish .. :(
[i]"offline solo play (u grow out of that at some point, its a thing of the past really)"[i]
It's only a couple of years passed since I played SM-Galaxy, and it was pure fun all the way. I know hundreds of single player titles what are much more relaxing and fun than movies or any other digital entertainment.
I admit, I'm not an active hardcore player anymore, but I still play a few minutes online almost every day and I never felt bad or childish about single player games.
Yes, nothing compares to a worthy quake game, but sitting in your rocking chair front of the TV with gamepad in hand, and enjoying how an awesome and fun story like (e.g) God of War unfolds, is also a great experience imo.
u know.. actually i play risen right now wich is the successor of the gothic series and has to be one of the few if not the only gameseries with authentic german voice and voiceactors instead of those other 99% that offer synthetic schoolbook german translations and therefor feel totally lifeless. (i dont play any games in my own native language because of that actually)
and i enjoy it... but on the other hand - its an exception and i would toally not mind it to have a cooperative mode for a friend to hop in ontop of that good story.
i wont say anything bad about storyheavy 1player games. but why would i compare them to mindless 2+player games? plus i cannot handle more than 1 game of that kind at a time for some reason and normally its not something to put an hour playtime in it but a whole evening to sink deep into the atmosphere.
+ this has nothing to do with the weakness of pc in the "easy access multiplayer" segment. i dont say u cannot have fun with your pc but that u cannot have fun with friends infront of your pc (wich is where consoles kick in)
True, that's exactly what I think, too. People want to be social, instead we're forced to isolate ourselves from other people as we play. It's not about being seen as a nerd per se, it's more about lacking social contact with others! (and I mean real contact, net-contact a la MMORPG is but a weak simulation, although even that works to attract the masses)
I remember playing NES in childhood, many games could be played in a two-player mode, and that was great. Even my own mother played with me. Nowadays PC games lack this, such a simple feature that could stop gaming to be seen as nerdish and make it more popular among everybody. Just develop some way for people to play together with one PC! I say one PC because they're too expensive nowadays and demand updating all the time. But most companies don't care for even the possibility of co-op mode at two PCs, let alone one.
I played Risen, too, and had similar thoughts, especially because I found it getting harder to the end when you keep getting attacked by a few strong opponents at once. How cool would it be if instead of summoning a skeleton and dragging it around with me, I could play with somebody else.
TV will always be more popular than games, because you can watch a movie together and discuss it. Not so with games...
Even Q3 and the other quakes had some social aspect, because they had lan support. Playing multiplayer games back then wasnt that antisocial as it is now with ql. I remember how cool was to connect ur pc with friends and play games for hours. Sometimes we were doing tourneys too and lan parties. ql really sucks at that and I wish at sometime they will provide lan support, at least for some kind of subscription.
btw never liked playing sp games, because firstly even the most genius ai is still retarded (as a true quaker I like to be challenged) and then I never liked the feeling of playing alone.
yes exactly.. people didnt enjoy LAN gaming back then because internet was not around. they did because they were able to share their favourite hobbys with people that think the same face to face. it is why humans join associations and clubs - we want real interaction. theres nothing that our brain puts more devotion into other than its counterpart - the brain of another person. its the very reason for love and hate, friends and foes. we just dont get ever tired of it and its the only thing we wont ever be able to figure out.
and when i saw that ability of nowadays GPUs to bring panorama view on X displays i did a heavy facepalm because its still not even possible to play a game with a friend on 1 pc but 2 displays. its just so much more rewarding to have an epic moment with a friend sitting nearby to share it. the pc could easily be a part of entertaintment for your real-life circles and would regain much lost ground instantly (its like watching movies.. even bad ones can result in awesomeness with good people around). why cant a friend come by and plug another tft, mouse and kb into the 2nd display port and the ton of usb ports and play a round of quake vs me? the os supports it, even the game wouldnt need more system power (lol at that anyway *hello my quadcore bored*) just the freakin game aint made for it to ever happen. why not the same for RTS like starcraft 2? your machine must compute every unit anyway, it'd just the additional number of input commands and nothing else.
but it fails in this.. instead the games look better and better and get epic music and whatnot and still flop while extremly stupid and cheap console games are popular as fuck. i dont get why pc game developers hardly learn from that and still blinkered produce games like 10 years ago
SP games are better, they need more randomness, most games will stick to the map script with no random if ( health <= random() ) , which makes SP games playable 2x then you notice everything is exactly the same, and dont bother again
MP get boring, and just kills your bandwidth limit on most ISP of todays cos all retards download movies n games 24/7, MP games are full of cry babies, and servers are all shit and dont let you camp, then you get kicked and have to find another server just because your took a piss or had a smoke
keyboard + mouse is a huge playing advantage. It would thow the online aspect into chaos. Bottom line is, you need a formal envionemnt to play with keyboard and mouse, consoles you can play on a bean bean bag.
Look at quake, most who know know its in a different league, but its simply too much of a game for a lot of people.
PC not the leading platform, he certainly means that the money is on the consoles, but pc will not be forgotten.
People complaining about rage's textures will be blown away by the doom4 graphics, because it will be a corridor shooter and wont have a wasteland to cover with textures...
If doom4 mp has the same movement that rage has, it will be great.
Okay you might be right but how does that excuse the mediocre games ID have released? They haven't had an excellent game since Q3 and that was 11 years ago now lol
Small screens will always suck, I expect someone to develop projector technology into these devices next so you can project the phone images onto a table or something and have like 19inch screen in the palm of your hand.
That might actually be a good thing fo some games like driving/rally, but I reckon a small standalone device (to the phone) which can be positioned and project video, perhaps with a series of fixing to clamp onto the most common environments.
the whole point of projectors is to blow images up to several feet, but on a phone, 19-22 inches would be more than enough,so I bet they could shrink the tech down into something like I said.
Something like an ipod cube, with swivel head etc.
you could paly it on the back of a headrest of a car, or on the train table, or on your desk or even the street.
Few years away yet no doubt, but no matter how good mobile devices get, without a decent screen they willalways suck and that's where they will evolve to next IMO.
I know that steam holding up data because these list have been proven to be inaccurate, since they predicted the fall of PC gaming why it's actually rising (great news btw).
But RAGE is steamworks only on the PC, so if you don't buy it on steam you just buy a steam activation code, right? It would be nice to know a source of the info what Rizzo stated, and I also wonder if more people bought it on steam or not?
Yes, if you buy it at the store, you get a code to activate on steam, and a disk with the data so that you don't have to download it. Since the game is bought at a retailer, the retailers gave the sales data out. Based on the number of active players on Steam, the retail sales were likely the majority of PC purchases.
Also: I just recently red it somewhere that you have to log-in to be included in those numbers, so that "peak" data is missleading. I don't even remember when was the last time I logged in with any of my accounts (I got 2 accounts, one for id games only and the other is for everything else:D)
Also: Since the new Steam servers, everything is coming down with 100Mbit/s, so I'm fine with Steam:)
If they could sell it all for $60,it might seem a lot, but it's really nothing after 6 years of development.
And they sell it for much less in average (you could get it under $30 on amazon with a discount), so if they sold 1 million copies with steam sales included (highly unlikely) for $40-50 average, that's a pretty low net income.
I think it depends on the infrastructure; there are big companies which does not pay very good their personnel, because they have 13 buildings and 230 lawyers, and there are small companies with 5-10 workers and 2 admins who make big money
I only play quake. If i wanted to play other games I would buy a xbox360 or ps3.
Why the fuck would i spend $1200 getting a super nice pc that will be obsolete in 3 fucking years. Then I have to get a nice LCD for my pc and worry about drivers and then optimizing and then overheating shit and all that bullshit.
FUCK PC GAMING. Only RTS/diablo style games can survive and ONLY because console gamers use a joystick lol.
Console gaming w/ keyboard and mouse support is where we should be heading. And will be heading eventually.
I don't give ONE FUCK about graphics. Fuck that noise. I played OoT and chrono trigger, secret of the mana and ff7 and SMB3 etc etc...
Consoles have been moving more towards being like PCs, not the other way around. It won't be long before console companies are just brands that sell gaming-oriented PCs.
... since then i will not play consoles anymore, i agree to a hardware which combines mouse input and a keyboard, well as John Carmack says ... the PC does not use all it's power to render fast enough
a gaming PC with integrated hardware should do it 8)
consoles are a step backwards in every aspect of video gaming you can think of. from graphics, to content, to multiplay, to play control, to sounds, to w/e you can think of dude. I mean what? the future?
video games are de-evolving dude. we have to wait for consoles to catchup to pcs before we can call them the future lol. If your just going on popularity or sales, that doesn't mean shit when it comes to innovation does it?
I will agree with you, but your not understanding. that the future is still pcs. because consoles, tv's, they will BECOME A PC IN THE FUTURE YOU TOOL!!!! haha.
and then companies like ID won't be able to make money by abandoning multiplayers and putting out dog shit recycled singleplayers on consoles. In the future, the console will be a pc, and console players will be just as experienced in video games as pc gamers. and they will know better, and be able to hack and bootleg shit just the same....
there needs to be a console which does NOT use controllers, AT ALL, and instead has a mouse and keyboard which every user is required to use, so that we can finally stop fucking making shitty ports between the two and just let PC gaming coalesce into console gaming and vice versa until the two are interchangeable - that is to say, the dream would be to have both PC players and console players participating on an equal level, both with mouse & keyboard, so as to not segregate the two communities of players while hopefully solving the age old conundrum of PC > CONSOLE (sorry i had to :) )
what is the actual difference in gameplay, games like COD are exactly the same, FFA and CTF etc, the maps are not made for the pace PC games get played at after a while, which a few custom maps can fix
console ports are shit and its nothing to do with the actual gameplay, its everything else is dumbed or cartooned out for console players, and voicetaunts are all crap and cheesie just like consoles
- It took almost a 1.5 years for L4D and L4D2 together to make me bored.
The insane amount of campaigns, the awesome server plugins and the endless coop fun together turned that shit into an awesome game. I was running a server and we had one game almost every single night.:)
- Borderlands was also great fun, but one game was enough, could not play it again.
- World at War coop on the hardest level was time well spent, but the second run was boring and we didn't finish:)
