that's a lot of cleaning.. how do you clean it actually?

i own a small size air compressor that can make a few BAR-s, with hose and an airpistol. They blow up tires with stuff like this, paint cars etc etc

hope you block that fan when you blow air into the stuff

then only idea i have and i saw it one time on low end gfx cards, the fan is actualy not a 'good' quality fan, i cant explain in english but it might be that it doesn t spin on small iron balls but some crapy stuff, which means it s getting bad with time and the fan will then run slower and be louder. hope that helps.

PS : grab another fan from a dead comp and put it at the place of the other one.

Those are sleeve bearings, rifle bearings, ball bearings, fluid bearings and magnetic bearings. (you were talking about the sleeve bearing which is pretty much useless with high rotation speeds)

If it's stops/slows down now, perhaps a cleaning could help but it will be noisy from now on and never will be anything like when it was new.

My advice is to trash the fan and get a cheap case-fan and put it on the card with two rubber bands. You can even "twist" the molex to feed it with 5V only because that's more than enough for a GT220.

Yea the first is better, Just remove the fan and that black cover thing.

Buy a 8cm case fan and just attach it with 2 strong rubber bands. Make sure you buy a fan which can start with 5V. The bands should go around the fan and the whole card. There are two gaps at the bottom where are no pins in the pci-e slot, those are perfect places to position the bands. If you also receive rubber mountings with the fan just put them on and let the fan rest on the sink on those, will reduce vibration and you can use a stronger string instead of the rubber bands if you want.

The molex conectors of the fan will have a yellow and a red wire (just swap things accordingly that the yellow pin plugs into a red pin in the molex coming out from the power supply.

You will have a very low noise/nearly silent video card what's very easy to clean, since you can take it off any time and clean it.

You could go more advanced here by pluging the fan onto the mother board and automatically adjust the speed based on the temperature of the GPU, but that would be an overshoot with a gt220 imo, you don't need such approach.

I have one at home at the moment its a 12V and has a red and blackwire is it good for the purpose or an 5V is a mus?

This is the 4pin molex coming out from your PSU. The pin with the red wire on the right and the black next to it are the 5V. The pin ont the right with the yellow cable and the black next to it are the 12V.

I don't think that the GT220 needs much cooling since it's a really a small chip, that's why I suggested that perhaps running the fan with 5V only would render the thing almost silent while still providing enough airflow to keep the card under 80-90C. Furmark burn-test can stress your card, make it run for 10-20mins and if it goes above 100C with 5V you must shut it down and it will need 12V to keep the thing cool.

if your fan has a mini molex what could be connected to the motherboard, just plug it in and you can control the thing automatically with Speedfan on most motherboards.

Machine oil.
Remove the sticker on the back of the fan, remove the rubber thing, put some machine oil in it. Worked just a few days ago with a friend's FANs - less noise too. If it doesn't work, try with another fan - I think they're all +5 or +12 volts (resp. red or yellow wire - read on molex).

Question is, did it work :)

I was experimenting with WD40 and FUNC-liquid, both said to be very good quality lubricansts, but they only helped for a short time (another 2 months) and most importantly they made things worse after the effect wear off.
I think it's safe to say that the lifespan of the sleeve-bearing fans can't really be extended much because of the physical damage caused by the high friction involved.

ps.: Somebody told me that I should try the special oil used in weapons, but that stuff was so expensive I decided to skip that part of the tests:)
