As far as I know SyncError is quakelive's associate producer. Sponge is the guy who does the web work, but as you said he's doing more than that.. I reckon he does quite a lot of stuff to maintain QL's services too.

also sync does webwork as you have admitted (his converting gillz scoreboard in dreamweaver) and his webskills can be verified in his introductory blog post when he joined id for ql as a webdesigner. If sponge is truly doing the majority of the webwork these days (possible since sync spends most of his time mapping), then that explains why so little is getting done coding wise and an even further example of the fail in management. It's been months since we found out bethesda's community manager is in charge of ql yet we still haven't heard from him. It's pretty much confirmed he doesn't give a rats ass about this game. No direction, no management, no advertising. So much fail.

It's the lack of upkeep. Any game can go to hell when the necessary functions to keep people happy aren't in place. You can continue to make a mockery of the system ql themselves setup, but that is what players have come to expect. Perhaps you can convince your friend adam to get rid of the statement on the quakelive home page that states people can easily play against each other at their skill level. In regards to abusers, once again, upkeep and maintenance, a necessary function of any game is seriously lacking. We could go back and forth all day long, but in the end you have to agree it is far to easy for people to abuse the system without any serious consequence.

p,s: don't forget that not every person who "whines" about the game is doing so without paying for it. There are a lot of unhappy customers who have every right to be upset, especially after being told by guys like diplodok that premium servers are "always" full. You and him share some responsibility in that as you've falsely advertised the game and created many of the people that later run back to irc or the forum to complain. Maybe some transparency, being open about the state of the game & being honest about it's downfalls will help change people's views they have of the ql moderators and of people like you. As i keep telling you, i commend your positive outlook on things, but if you can't have an honest discussion about the issues plaguing the game then nothing will change.

30k tracked duel players doesn't mean there are 30k active duel players. About 17k players are located between 1130 and 1200 elo points, which means they played probably just a couple of games, recognized they suck and stopped playing duel.

You should rather take the played games per day graph into account if you want to estimate the active playerbase. 4k games per day. Makes 2k players if you assume 2 games per day for an active player. Most people dont play every day, but some people also play 9 h a day :x

There are multiple accounts in the duel side, because the data is 3 months of collation.

The CA data is only the last 7 days, and so there will be very small numbers of people who played with multiple accounts in that period. Basically CA activity on ql is enormous..

If premium award statistics is correct, there are (or were initially) tens of thousands of premium accounts. That's a lot.

The term "A lot of players" is a subjective statement and is by that referring to the persons personal point of view. "A lot of players" Does not have a numerical equivalent. A lot of players could mean anything to "20%" to "IT'S OVER 9000".

In Sweden, we pay lots and lots of taxes, almost 35%. That's not over 50% though.

Premium servers are less active than standard ones in my opinion. Also in my opinion, many players have premium and even pro accounts. I've got yet another opinion on this (since you like hearing them so much :P), and that's that premium players don't make use of their account much: If your average premium user were less afraid to join an empty server and start a game we'd see a lot more premium games.

I base this opinion on my personal experience with joining empty premium servers in which people seem to often come in. That is why I surmise that if others were to do it, they may have a similar experience.

Since we know 84,000 accounts got the winter award in dec 2009, it also proves at least 60,000 people quit ql in that timespan, multiple accounts and all. Anyways, the data helps, not sure why you'd disagree. There's no way to get an absolute accurate # out of that, but it clearly shows there were no more than 123,000 total accounts that played 1 game in that month in aug 2009.

it's unrealistic to assume people , on average, have more than 2 accounts, it just is. Only a few idiots get 5-15 accounts to troll other players, but those players usually get banned for harassment. Are you trying to insist everyone int he ql community is a troll?

id is tiny compared to most companies, they were too small to run 2+ games at once. They're also still working on doom 4. They'd have a faster turnover rate if they focused all their attention and resources on one game.

Quake 1 sold millions of copies, Quake 2 sold millions of copies, Quake 3 was a huge commercial failure, Quake 4 was even worse, ETQW was even worse, QL was even worse. They spent years on Rage, aren't even licensing the engine out, and it was a commercial failure. Doom 3 sold well enough, but really only because it stood on the shoulders of Doom 2 - I wouldn't expect as much from Doom 4.

No, it isn't unrealistic. We've already seen people on this site with 40-60 accounts. We can't say what the average is, one way or the other. This isn't up for discussion, as I don't care what you want to guess. You have no credible information to back up your claims, so they are invalid.

id is tiny compared to most companies, they were too small to run 2+ games at once. They're also still working on doom 4. They'd have a faster turnover rate if they focused all their attention and resources on one game.

He's got thin skin. He can't handle any kind of criticism whatsoever. You did nothing wrong. I know the update you're talking about and you're not alone in that criticism. Syncerror is in preservation mode and it wouldnt' suprise me one bit if he starts throwing people under the bus when this game gets shut down instead of blaming his own actions or moreover his inactions to take care of the problems plaguing the game. But that would require some sort of acceptance that he's not superior.

Two things you should know:

(1) id is a company that sustains its operation by making money.

(2) The super skill intensive PC fps genre hasn't been popular since the initial release of Q3A.

Why put any more resources in to a game that has no realistic growth potential?

This isn't 1998. Quake is no longer a major node of the online gaming world. At best we are the "Luge" or "Curling" of the gaming Winter Olympics. A sideshow to the console fps', RTSs, and MMORPGs.

Clearly id has no idea what we want or any intention to pander to the minority. Hence their degradation to a common cliche console fps producer.

I don't blame them. Everybody needs money.

all they have to do is treat quakelive with the respect of a real life professional athletic sport.

run quakelive like an IEM tournament. Bring back the 5th tier, Sponge and Syncerror foolishly removed, yet are too stubborn to admit.... and don't let people manually change tiers. treat it like a professional tourney.... ...Take the tier system and skill ratings more seriously. and people will take quake serious enough to drop money on it.

right now its just known for having nothing but the worst of the worst in gaming. The most dishonest unsportsmanlike players in gaming history. Notorious for being full of nothing but tier slumming team stacking alts.

ID has to regulate more strictly fair play and competitive matches in public servers.

Pubs is where it starts. IF riot ran quakelive instead of ID, this game would have a minimum of thousands upon thousands a day playing.... I truly believe this.

the most popular pro games are over 10 years old and have dated simple graphics. And real life pro sports, like golf for example, blow quake's learning curve right out of the water. Can't even compare the learning curve of real life games and sports compared to video games. Video games are easier to learn and just as many people play them of all ages.

The only reason ql is unpopular is because of the community and lack of regulation by ID. This is part of a developers job. regulating fair play is their job. They want to put it on the community, and then blame the community as a scapegoat, when ID isn't doing their JOB!!

I couldn't edit my post, but i also always like to shoot down the theory that quake is unpopular because it has fantasy weapons.

and I'd also just like to add, that sure the community makes the game.

but ID themselves are responsible for creating this community that exists in ql. ID created this community themselves. and they are just as much to blame.
