got a samsung sm2233rz, it was the cheapest going at the time and I enjoy having it. I just think to myself that I could endure the horror of a 60hz monitor. Not as great as a good ol' CRT, but still badass.

You have to make a custom EDID file with the desired resolution+refresh rates (just follow this guide).
When you are done with that, make custom resolutions (in video card's CP) with the same values what you used in the custom EDID.

hmm what you are talking about is only available with nvidia, i dont see any way to creat custom res with custom refresh rate on ATI cards.

edids are independent of ur gfx card driver. read the thread before u comment.

ps: if ur running catalyst it should automatically detect ur crt i think. mine did anyway. the options come up under "vga display" or something similar. u can manually unlock the max frequency in there and then enable whatever resolution u want in ur normal desktop preferences.

Well I don't have an ATI atm, but iirc you can disable EDID usage in CCC, and from that point, any resolution found in the registry will be available to use even if the monitor can't handle that.

I use ati tray tools not CCC but i can comfirm you can disable EDID in CCC, at least with old CCC (2 years old drivers).

Well, it possible to mod the driver files, (I did it a few times) but I don't think you would need to disable EDID with nvidia cards. The EDID override method + making custom res in the control panel always works except some multi-monitor cloning setups (what i have here) where the two monitors have completely different default resoultions and refresh rates.

About the registry thing: there are 3rd party utilities to add custom resultions to the registry (like Powerstrip for examlpe).

i trashed away my old ati card, i have a GTX560ti now, i have no issue with any game but crysis warhead doesn t want to run at anything but 60hz, other games run 800x600 at 200hz default, whyle games that let me set refresh can go at 200hz, so with your idea i could force any refresh at any res automaticaly ?

Well, not really (it's not XP after all, and you know the rule, everything is getting shittier and shittier xD), there are 5 things you can do about refresh rates (you have to make those resolutions+refresh rates in the driver/utility ofc):

1, Tweak the game if it's possible (menu config, etc)

2, Tweak the EDID by adding the desired resolutions into Standard timings with high refresh rate values, soon as win7 sees your primary native resolution like 1152x864@144Hz, most of the games will pick this native res by default.

3, Set default refresh rates to a high value for each resolution with third party utility (e.g: rivatuner)

4, Set directx default refresh rate at last page of dxdiag.exe (useless imo)

5, as a last resort, make a non-existent custom resolution with only a high refresh rate value available (best method if everything else fails) so lets say you create a resolution 960x720@125Hz or 1216x912@144Hz, if you set this resolution in the game, there will be no choice for the sucker but to use the only availabe 125 or 144Hz because the mode does not exists in 60Hz. There were games when this was the only way for me to avoid 60Hz:(


Method 2 works for most of the games, and method 3-5 are things you only have to do once, so it's not a big problem imo.

I think it would work, but XP allows you to switch whatever resolution you have in the registry (created buy NV control panel or some other utility), so you simply don't need that thing.

if the picture wasn't stable, perhaps you had polarity or sync problems, which can be cured with a custom resolution. If it's working under XP it should work in WIN7, it's just harder to get it running if the EDID part of the monitor is not fully compatible.

And that's exactly why people should continue using XP, reliable, fast and simple. Win7 is glossy crap, better than Vista but still crap.

heya. currently using win7 + catalyst on a 6870 along with a viewsonic g220f. i actually got 120hz with 1024x768 without even having to do the whole edid thing. before that i was using win7 on my laptop connected to a viewsonic p220fb (pretty much the same tube) but had to fuck around with edid files because the card on the laptop was an nvidia.

long story short, this isnt as bad as u make it out to be. however its certainly less crt friendly than win xp. so your point is certainly valid. however i got win7 for 30$ cos im a student. and to me its certainly worth that much.

ps: i think even with edid files it limits the hz to 125? and u have to do some more stuff to get it to do 150 i think. not sure about this since ive never been interested in going that high.

ps2: actually my old crt died. well not sure if it died but the relay certainly fucked up. now it just sits there clicking away. i have a feeling its an easy fix with like a changed capacitor or something but nobody nowadays takes fixes on crts and im not into it enough to try it for myself. as a result i now have a huge ass useless crt sitting in my home. since i actually got it on craigslist from like 250 miles away im too emotionally attached to the thing to throw it away too. :/

your best bet to get your CRT fixed is to find an arcad platform reparator, the kind of stuff you see in carnivals and stuff like this.

You need to remove a pin so you can get more refresh rate on CRT.

I am not sure that I can push my LCD 120hz to 125hz so I can turn on Vsync on older games to get nice performance.

Most LCDs like your Acer are already setup for maximum Hz on their native resolutions. Your specific monitor is only capable of 120KHz max vertical frequency :P

I was only able to bump my LCD because I knew it had a maximum vertical freq of 75KHz and the horizontal bandwidth it pulled was a lot lower on 12x7 than it's 12x10 res which supported 75hz out of the box.

My monitor certainly won't support 75hz @ 1920x1080, but 70~72hz is doable.

try 74.9 because 75Hz@1920x1080 is too much for a single DVI-I connection.
I had blank screen too, but it's ok with 74,9 and monitor and windows still see it as 75Hz.

I play on 1280x720 regardless since I feel that lower resolutions provide less room for error. Placebo effect or not :P

If you are playing FPS games online, there are absolutelly no benefits on an LCD panel to make it run 125Hz instead of 120Hz (because turning vsync ON would introduce additional input lag which is not desirable).
While I'm sure you can't damage your monitor with such tests, you could accidentally create a signal which produces no picture on your screen, and that's can be annoying because you have to boot in VGA/SAFE mode and undo things there.

Just leave it like how it is now, it's not worth it:)

I just use Powerstrip. I manage to get a bunch of custom refresh rates with my G520. Without Powerstrip though, it won't let me go nearly as high on most resolutions. Another feature I love is that it forces these refresh rates in full screen applications. At the moment I manage to get:

1920x1200 @ 100hz
1600x1200 @ 105hz
1680x1050 @ 120hz
1400x1050 @ 120hz
1280x800 @ 130hz
1280x720 @ 130hz
1024x768 @ 160hz
800x600 @ 170hz

Dunno i have no problems on win7 with anything. And it s actually much faster (not counting quake wich is fast on anything lol)

so you gotta find a "hardware" based solution and you do that by removing pin number 12 from the vga cable (: that way you wont have edid anymore ruining you pleasure of having 1xx hz.

I did it with nail scissors... Took me like 10 minutes or so. You have to be really patient though.

Why would you mess with the cable if you can just make a custom EDID? Also the cable method is not working on every machine while the .INF file works every time.

It's already mentioned above but I'll account my own experience with this.

I found out about the pin trick and the EDID custom driver trick, did the latter and forced win7 to add 120 hz to the supported resolutions of the monitor I had, it's simple once you stumble on the right webpage, directions and all.

Yeah, but the sad part is that even people using LCD's also have problem forcing their monitors to display 120hz. I think this has less to do with the operating system and more about monitor and GPU drivers.

Ati gpu drivers that is. It is fixed by now, but before there where problems for sure. Or stupid buyers that buy monitor that support 120Hz only in the native resolution or/and try to use single dvi cable. Saw them all. Otherwise w7 is far better than xp, and normally ms didn't think about monitors that are... yeah, you got it :)

When Windows 7 came out I had problems with refresh rates higher than 60hz, but so did everybody else. Nvidia next drivers simply fixed this by allowing you to enter custom resolutions and refresh rate. I don't use any extra software to force 120 or 150hz. I hope the same could be said about the ATI users. Zuer what video card do you have?

everything software related does not work on w7. you cannot override the edid with it.

That's why you have to change the EDID itself, and again, the cable method is not working on every machine why the software method does work all the time.
And ripping out that pin not only can cause problems with power saving features, but also could mess up certain system configurations with multiply monitors, where the monitor with the modded cable will be the primary display wether the user want it or not.

Use the software method, or at least don't "advertise" the inferior one - imo.

I've learned it is the total opposite. I cannot complain. I have had never problems with anything. If you actually have a monitor that has pins on both ends (some do) you can easily replace the cable if your monitor stops working (if ever!). I don't see the problem, really.

I have tried it for weeks. Everything you can think of to change the refresh rates with any program out there and it never worked. It did not switch to the desired hz rates.

Finally, I removed the pin. And it fucking worked. But whatever floats your boat.

yea they "invented" the cable method because there were some configuration where the custom INF file got ignored by WIN7, but this is not the case lately, and pin 12 is required for power saving and PNP detection as well, so it's not desirable/most efficient to get rid of it.

OK, that I did not know but it works like a charm for me regardless. But as I said, if you can replace the cable, you can just try and see if it works.

yea I did that and it's a nice easy solution, it was wroking for a long time, but it's not working on one of my machines anymore. I test with the same monitor and the with the same cable, and i get black screen. Soon as that PC boots, the monitor goes into power-saving mode and won't recover, but if I change the cable it works normally.

Is it a worthwhile step up from your 17" dell CRT you had? I have the 21" variant of your old monitor, just curious :). Picture quality, colours etc. Iirc the dell monitors are just a rebranded variant Sony trinitron monitors, so there shouldn't be much of a difference. Would still like to hear your opinion though :)

It is actually a 19" I had. Sadly, it just broke i.e. from one day to another one of the thingies inside broke and it mainly looked purple and very blurry.

I always encourage people to get 19" screens because 21" are just too bulky. And the feeling when playing on a 19" screen feels perfect to me!

And yes, the Dell ones are just rebranded. Trinition all the way!

BUT in comparison it is really hard to say. I think the Dell was still a bit more crispy but with the colors were not as good as on the iiyama. I am hoping that this iiyama last me for another year or two because then I will give up quake altogether, anyway.

Yeah I had a crt running at 160hz on Win 7 no problems, just ran games full windowed to allow them to run the same as the desktop.

Finally decided to upgrade to windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.
I was too stubborn to leave XP as it all worked, but had to reinstall so decided to bite the bullet and I think I'm glad I did.

I still say microsoft made vista purposly bad and resource hungry to drive the hardware market and reinvent the wheel and they no doubt deserve some bad karma for that, but I can't complain given Xp and this OS will last me so many years.
