Almost every pro pay with a 4:3 resolution because they are used to it since Q3. rapha plays with widescreen and some australians I think but I think all the other use 4:3 (Cooller, Avekkk, Cypher, etc.).

No advantage I think, only a matter of getting used to it.

After this event I can say that the DUEL is so much better to watch/play on lan than TDM. It contains a lot more viewers on stream, it's more exciting, games are more intense, unpredictable and interesting. Quake TDM is still very good game but not to watch. Also TDM isn't good mode to promote quake for new players, because for them it looks like random shooting. Just my opinion.

When 4 guys who don't even play the game anymore, come to a tournament and clean up and no actual teams attend, then something is messed up.

Nobody plays TDM (including the guys who just won the tournament) - something like 100 games a day get played. Why did this warrant a major international tournament?

It's mad that duel wasn't going to be played at all, and TDM was chosen. It's like the community is actively trying to fuck itself in the ass.

All I can say is thank fuck for 2GD, and Twitch.TV for saving dreamhack. What a joke it would have been without the duel tournament.

not like the duellers are known for their activity :D

even if only 100 tdm games a day get played, its easily the game mode that has the most organized people involved in. but yeah i agree, without the duel DH would have been horrible with this team lineup, DHS was much much better. 2 weeks notice time doesnt help non-sponsored teams in the slightest either, but the biggest issue was the teamsbeing just horribly unmatched in skill

Face it, you're obviously biased frs, and TDM is a complete joke in Quake Live and that is not going to change. There are maybe 2 teams/mixes in the world that are capable of competing with each other, and one of them is MIA (the noctis/fazz/deus mix). The other is essentially a bunch of aim whores, with very little team work despite any claims to the contrary that come from all the TDM talking-heads here on esreality like you and vor.

I was a believer at first, but by now I've come to realized that QL TDM is just a huge aim fest and teamwork means jack squat. Cess cess cess, spam spam spam, whoever can hit the 50% LG and 80% rail wins.

Still in denial? How does a mix team of the likes of cypher and strenx play colwn the closest? Cause they can aim. It's just a huge aim fest.

And it's incredibly boring, when you know colwn will destroy pretty much every other team. I don't ever fall asleep during a quake tournament, but this time I did, and I'm not even going to bother going back to the VODs to watch that, I just don't care.

I think even CTF was better than TDM when it existed.

meaning that the big mass of duel/ca games are pub games with players who never take part in any tournament, while a lot of the tdm players are organized and play in cups/clans/pickup. interestingly enough the duel leagues such as EMS are even worse with delays and dropouts than TDM ever was and thats only with 2 people involved in the match and the total amount of players involved in the league is smaller than in tdm or ctf for that matter.

tox and linkin have a 10 year history in tdm and both are tdm players first and duel second. stermy has been a top quaker for ages and winz is more than solid in every aspect of the game aswell. they are not only aim machines but quake machines. obviously their biggest strength is their aim but they actually practised for this tournament, which cannot be said of the dueller mix (and btw they didnt even play so close vs them, 300 did in the finals) who's only tactic was rush rush, colwn actually made some clear tactical calls during the games when they had to. its not like any single team at this tournament was an actual team and none of the mixes hardly even tried any teamplay besides basic holding of areas. atleast 300 made 1 teamplay effort to steal a mega in final osp5. truth is, none of them had "great" teamplay but from what i saw, colwn had the strongest. couple that with the strongest tdm individuals and there you go

I knew the event would be pretty shit for TDM, I knew months in advance because so many weren't planning on going. Teamwork barely matters with such a gulf in class between individuals in teams, you're right, the same as strategy barely means anything in duel between top tier and trash. When the event is *confirmed* so late and so many teams can't get sponsors and good TDM players aren't attending, it's going to suck.

I'll take your word on it being boring, I didn't watch any of dreamhack.

TDM is not lacking more excitement or better games. It is lacking team-history and team 'character' to spice things up. If brain-rapha plays ueberskill-cypher, there is much more to get excited about than just the match.

When unmatched, sk, aaa, and ic played, that was TDM as it should be. 10 random teams build up for one tournament doesn't do that.

... anyways ye, i like what rapha said about 2v2 replacing 4v4 TDM could be a better way , as in playing (scheduling etc) and as spectating (makes is more personal?)

... that aside i am missing a feature, so casters can pick a player from scoreboard with a click of a mouse... ... most of the confusion sets in when acaster frantically has to cycle thru the list of players . (this happens mostly on 2 power-up maps)

Well it is a good thing. 40k+ ppl were exposed to Quake, and overall they did seem very positive about the game, judging from the chat.

I just wished we would have had a more epic finale. It really seemed like rapha had technical problems and didnt ever really play up to his potential :(

2GD did a great job carrying the show. In contrast everyone seemed to facepalm when that horrible host swooped in and made everything akward :S

btw raphas problem is his mousecord, when your mousecord is fucked up it changes from slow to fast sens and vice versa, i recently fixed this on my mx510 when switching the cord

so it isnt his cfg or account, but his mousecord

Okay, here is some summary of DHW'11:

1) Boring as hell TDM tournament. 100% one-sided, no mercylimits (why?!), but still - all matches have been streamed on main stream.
2) Great coverage by lvl^ as usual. I missed 2GD/Vo0/av3k show sometimes, but there were some delivered moments like interview with 2GD's mom and so on. nvc & Disrepute also did their job pretty well.
3) A little bit weird choice of streaming duel games, also I didnt like that so many interesting games missed.
4) Otherwise, DH admins let other streamers but lvl^ a access to servers (hello Quakecon), so we have VODs at least - but still the schedule of Duel tournament was just awful.
5) sharpe did an excellent job with those Day highlights movies, big thanks for him.
6) strenx failed one more time on LAN, and his rage is so sweety. <3
7) Shit one-sided Duel final.

In my opinion, if the next DH gonna have a TDM tourney also, admins should think twice about it expediency. Maybe it is better to refuse TDM and make one big Duel tournament with solid prizemoney, good mappool (bring ztn back ffs), bo5s in playoffs and correct schedule.

P.S. I was really imressed by ~~k1llsen~~ parkinsons shaft this tourney.

Just wanted to say I appreciate the Quake tournament. I haven't played since the original but watching the matches has motivated me to download the game from quakelive.com and try playing again.

it warms my heart to read these posts on teamliquid.. only to realize how disappointing QL is compared to a game like SC2 in terms of infrastructure

Duel final was so.... meh. Kinda like the last time when rapha lost 0:3 against cypher and everyone felt robbed of seeing a decent final.

TDM final was better imo, at least dm14 was a nailbiter for the first 15 minutes.

edit: Duel should have been either double elimination or Bo5 starting from quarterfinals.
TDM grand final should have been Bo5.

Fuck vods and fuck stream with 3 fps on it. Game itself looks ridicilous and unwatchable. Upload demos and save this event least you can do for us who like quake. The entire crowd (even if SC2) absolutely loved the quake from what I was told by those behind the scenes, they cheered at every frag during mccormics pre match movie. Quake Live cannot be saved by our small community alone, our player base will probably never grow beyond what it is, the great thing about quake is how good it can be to watch.

I know what you mean but what s in my head is this: 50 k ppl watching quake as something CRAP which isnt in any way. The final stream was painfull to watch such low fps n hickups. Before that it was better on lvlup stream but still with few fails too many.
They cant appreciate skill and gameplay if they cant see it. Some of the crazy rails on Aero looked like shit and nothing special duo low quality and fps (i watched it on 1080p+).
On such stream only ppl who played quake can know wtf is going on and how much skill is involved. I appreciate the effort from you guys honestly but in my eyes it could (SHOULD) be much better. It s fkn 21st century i wanna SEE what s going on not GUESS IT. Just my 2 cents.

I completely understand what you felt, because I felt exactly the same. Watching our favorite 10+ years old game on that 15fps(!) blury crap, was just as big blasphemy as the retard host at the end. I tried hard to unsee/ignore and just enjoy the coverage, but it was impossible for me to adapt and I eventually quited the final (and I just watched it now on the vod) .....but

I still think it was great we had Quake there! Despite the mostly imba matches we had this year, those youngsters on the chat who never heard about this game were so excited about it, and I think they don't really cared about the quality of the stream like we did, so you should try to see things from their perspective a little bit.

Imho we should be really grateful for DreamHack, for the sponsors, and for the nice coverage as well. Well done everyone and thanks again.

Cyphers rockets are so delicious, almost an 'abuse' of the game (in a good sense). Seriously, how many times did he direct rocketed rapha on toxicity when he was technically in a worse position and came out on top. He really has raphas game down and either rapha steps up his game again or starts to match cypher aimwise to stand a chance.

which lines of code are responsible for the sounds and opponent sounds on his cfg ?

it seems as though he can hear shards or items being picked up as if the enemy was almost next to him. I know it's not cheating, but which lines specifically give out that effect

Not sure whether everyone heard 2GD on stream:

- He's secured some money from Twitch.tv to host some tournaments. Basic idea is to have a major LAN tournament every three months this year (including UGC), so that pros might rest (or simply focus on other things in their lives for a month and a half after one and then start preparing for another one.
- There's also a plan to host few online tournaments with some money to be won, some kind of extended version of zotacs that would attract all the top-notch players
- Despite his co-operation with Twitch, 2GD on his own is also planning to start his own show together with Trance, atm they're building studio, which should be ready in January. Here one of the ideas is to arrange a set of showmatches with few hundred quid to be won, QL alongside other games. What's really cool is that to qualify for a showmatch, players will need to compete in Zotacs, which should encourage pros to take part (so finally no easy cash for Stren-x :) )

All in all, tons of action-packed duel stuff this year :) I really really like the way it all turns. Because if first-class esport essentially means dealing with douchebags like this ginger on stage, if it's all about licking' sponsors asses and attracting stupid crowds, then fuck it, let's make quake a narrow elitist club for the chosen ones, us!!! :]

and now to bashing their effort: TDM is simply not suitable for international LAN events.

Imagine if all that work and prize money went into a 32 player duel tournament, or feature CTF once in an european event with 8 proper teams.

Without the duel tournament this event would have been indeed worthless. I also agree that this red haired orga guy is a douche. Cypher looked pretty childlike (how old is he?) but who cares really..
Imo 2gd gets too much credits for his casting, his jokes are all on the cost of others, some may be considered pretty rude for this setting and he shows his disagreement with his co-caster (reasonable or not) way too much.
Anyway thx to lvl^ and twitch.tv!

CTF would be awesome but also only with a proper attendance :E

All in all, a great duel tournament and the TDM was kind of boring. We need to switch it up some every now and then to keep things fresh and exciting. CTF now TDM then 2v2 at some point like rapha mentioned.

i think they should release a map editor and make all the options callvotable

Yepp, it simply came down to, cypher made no mistakes and played well, and rapha did not. Rapha made many mistakes, I feel like he could have won t7 and hub if he did not make mistakes, and I felt like it should have been a 4 mapper at the least.

This is like exact role reversal of old days, when cypher would be the one who chokes against rapha, now the opposite is true.

I was actually there with som mates. I think most people in the dreamarena enjoyed QL even tho rapha didn't perform as Good as in his previous games. My mates had not seen QL before and their input was that it was much easier to follow duel than TDM or SC2. One big problem during the final on the stage was that the streaming config was way too dark and it wasn't that easy for the viewers to see the architecture of the map. I think the current stream config works great on your computer but on the stage something else should be used in the future.

Mad props to xou, Trance, Disrepute, nvc, 2GD and all the players and people who followed the event. It was fun overall, but still could be better. Congrats cypher and colwn, commiserations rapha, it was clear something was wrong with him in that final.

p.s. "could be better" means:
-BO5 since quarters in duel (sc2 gets bo5 since semis and bo7 final and the games there take from 10 to 30 minutes on average) and BO7 in fucking final!
-player interviews (I knew there were some, but they were mainly about TDM)
-slightly adjusted schedule so we could see most of interesting/deciding group matches and all quarters of duel

Regarding the sensitivity bug, I think most people who never experienced it don't understand how it can undermine your game : miss a few standard shots and you'll become suspicious ( see the little circles he did with his mouse on aero, as to check wtf was wrong ), then shit won't feel right again unless you go out for a walk or have to wait 2 hours and come back fresh to your next game.
Dunno if Rapha still gets the wobbly sensitivity problem ( it's kinda fixed from what I can tell aka feels a bit different when it kicks in but not a major source of mousepad sweeping anymore ) but maps changes still do fuck shit up ( t4-t7-dm20 have always been the ones that seem to feel the most fucked up )

only one i heard it happen to during the tourneys is rapha. and from what little i know, the only common denominator is hes ql account (not the hardware, not the software, he redid hes whole cfg afaik, and only keep happening to him)

Sensitivity bug is the weirdest thing out. I can only think it is the way Quake Live is integrated with the browser. I say this because I had never experienced it in Quake3 unlike Quake Live.

usually, yes. it really depends on the teams though. thats why i would actually root for ctf because its pretty spectatorfriendly and really nice to watch i.e. seeing linkje rj out of rooms is just eye-candy.

I love how 2GD explains the maps in the grandfinal for minutes while the camera doesn't even show his POV.

Something like that would never happen for more than 3 seconds with someone semi-professional responsible/involved.

The grand final was one of the best I've even seen when it comes to show. The host was lame but the scene, the presentation of the players, the crowd, the 40k viewers on the stream and all was excellent.

Also, Cypher did an amazing performance even though I'm a bit sad he 3 - 0'ed rapha so easily (just because I would have liked to see more games). His speech at the end and the way he answered the (bad) questions was perfect, there was a lot of emotion in my opinion and it made Quake look like a really enjoyable game to evolve in.

Also, if some people are interested, I gathered all VODs thanks to xou's link but I redid some cut that was badly done.

Look, Cypher is a true champion. He is not some silly youtube fag who whoring himself on the channel day and night to get $0.0001 from teenagers clicks. He snipes the very best player for thousands of euros. He don't even have to make an effort to dodge a retard like that host. After watching the final at DH, i'd be more then happy to give my right nut to watch a game with Zero4 and Cypher considering their current form.

Prediction would be a 5 mapper with at least triple overtime on each map!

Just found opportunity to watch the closing ceremony footage all the fuss is about.

The "host" surely is a douche (coke nose?). I still was more impressed by cypher's totally unimpressed reaction, giving out some likable details about how much he appreciated his girl friend taking an interest in his gaming and such.

This was a class act. Two leagues ahead. Very nice.
