I wouldn't know, i did not put anyone on my ignore list, yet, and i tend to read most of the content.

However, i'd imagine larping the functionality as opposed to actually having it and the option to use it, wouldn't be the optimal choice.

I see your point. Imo the current system is better because i don't care to read anything derived by the people on my ignore list. I don't feel like i'm missing out on any responses to some trolls rants/projections. This cuts the viewable content down considerably for me, which is a plus imo because i don't have to sift through as much bs.

It's fairly rare, but it does happen. If i'd put a poster i didn't like, but one that is very active and posts a lot, on ignore, i'd start getting worried and paranoid about losing interesting content (not necessarily constructive content, but still).

I don't think anyone with your approach would lose anything with the system i'm proposing, you'd still have anything they post and write hidden, just conveniently available for easy perusal should the mood to read their shit strike, and you'd be 100% sure you won't miss anything actually worthwhile.

Hell, there could even be an option to hide even the post "thumbnails" to make it like it is now, if anyone would want to.

I disagree. It is true I wouldn't have to read the posts by an ignored user, but I would still have to scroll through the tree of bullshit the user produced. I would rather save scrolling time than catch the 1 in a million event when an ignored user thread produced something worthwhile.

What you are proposing would work well with a site that has strict moderation, because the trolling would be scarce. However, ESR is an anarchy. At any given point in time there are several resident trolls hyper posting their trash. There needs to be a way to effectively navigate the site with out being bogged down by "Ignored User Post, click to view" blocks taking up space.

This doesn't have to be a replacement, i don't see why both the current ignore system, and the one i'm suggesting here, cannot be alternative options for each other.

in the future, after esr re-write, we will probably be able to hide posts based on any criteria, easily and 'ignore user' can easily be one of those, but I don't see much value in adding this now.

because really, who's forcing you to stop scrolling and read the persons posts? the point of the ignore feature is precisely to cut out anything that might lead back to the user you're ignoring. if you want to see what is someone saying to the user, just take him off, and don't read the posts...

Well, the bigger issue for me is losing entire post trees because of one person you might have on ignore. Personally, i'd have extreme difficulty forcing myself to not read a particular person's posts entirely, i am here to absorb the words of other people after all. :p

And yeah, it's just a feature suggestion, there are definitely other, more important things to take care of for now.

If a topic gets dominated by like 2-3 people then its..

A) Probably not that good to begin with.

B) Other users are not putting in enough interest to get it back on track.

Most of the good threads (few and far between) tend to be pretty functional on the whole.

End of the day only so much you can talk about a played out game most of you were bored of 6 years ago and mostly only play now cos there is nothing else close to it.

While it's true (and i agreed as much above) that the derivatives of "troll" discussions are more often than not on the level of the source material, there are those rare cases of legitimately good input being lost in them.

I think it's just better to have the option to salvage them instead of having the "fuck it all" approach the current feature provides.

Taking you as an example, i can think of many cases where discussions with you as their centerpiece spawned off some decent banter worth reading. If i had put you, or one of the people you were arguing with, on ignore, i would have missed it.

Of course, one man's garbage is another man's treasure, and it's all a matter of perception. However, i can't think of any non-arbitrary reasons (nor see anyone here presenting them) why ease of use and more flexible functionality could be a bad thing. Best one would be that you'd still have the posts cluttering up the threads, even if their content would be hidden, but that can be easily alleviated with a tickbox in the preferences that would hide the posts by ignored users completely (as it is now).

This is not for me. Like i said, i don't put anyone on ignore, and i don't plan to (even with this new sexy script around). I can imagine some people being annoyed by someone to the point where they don't really care about losing content anymore, though.

threads with ray and daniel tend to become half as big with the new script, which is a lot nicer for general reading etc. if you don't care what certain people are saying. still, if you want to find out what they posted you can get their posts back with a single click.
