I've played it, and my thoughts are that it's not very skill intensive as the previous Tribes games. Hi-Rez seems to have taken the approach of changing or dumbing down mechanics for virtually no reason, with little improvement over the previous games in terms of gameplay.
It's not going to be a strong competitive game like the first 2 titles were. It's going to get people talking about tribes on the PC, and the xbox, but it doesn't really strike me as a game that anyone from other highly competitive FPS games would switch over to.
I mean it's got 1 hit airstrikes on light and medium armors, you can't have a competitive game with airstrikes.
I'm not sure how airstrikes are in RTCW, in T:A I can safely say they are a massive problem to CTF.
Particularly they influence flag chasing, flag standoffs, and general flag defense all in a negative way. It's basically like the offensive mortar tactic, but instead you just point a laser costing about 2500 credits. The laser itself can be seen, but people don't usually expose much of themselves or they are covered on the side of a slope, on top of that it isn't very difficult to earn 2500 credits in a game.
Because of this, you don't even need heavy offense in certain situations to pressure the light on flag, or the light defense. On top of that they have a massive spread, fire 8 or so projectiles and can cripple your health pool or even kill you if you took some damage before hand.
The credit system should be used for things like deployable inventory stations, upgrading turrets or base sensors. I'm not really fond of this system because I'd rather get rid of spawning in kit and the credits system, and just use the same system of the previous titles. Generators controlled deployables, inv stations, and vehicle pads. I'd also like to get rid of this stupid loadouts system with 2 weapons and limited loadout selections.
But those are just the minor issues with T:A. The game is in beta and I hope that beta is not just a showcase for the game, like the rest. As a singular title, you might view it as OK, in the state it's in I'd say it's slightly more fun to play than MW3, but less fun than it's spiritual succesor; Legions: Overdrive.
the competitive ruleset is still being developed but even in 16v16 pub play its hella fun. theres an invitational match coming up and a bunch of people from some hardcore t2 teams are gonna be working to develop a 7-10vs competitive ruleset with all the faggotry disabled.
recommend the $30 preorder now if you plan on playing it, its worth the 30 and then some
Ah ok. Have watched some videos on youtube and it looks really promising. Havent played any Tribes game before, but I enjoyed Section 8 earlier this year. Still I will wait for an official release and have a look at it first.
that sounds pretty lame and enough reason to skip trying the game out.. like every game that comes out nowadays =/ Altho I heard some actual gamers are trying to get them to implement a playable competition mode or something where shit is equal, hope they listen.
I suggest you get on Tribalwar.com, TW is where a majority of the Tribes community is at, go to general discussion and scroll down to where the thread is. It's usually on the first page or on the top of the page, after that just ask for a key. You'll get one in a while.
the $30 gets you VIP status and tribes gold which is used to unlock classes.
otherwise it takes time playing to get 'tokens' to buy classes.
anyway when this game goes gold i expect it will have at least a minor competitive scene. im gonna be there and hopefully it will blossom into something awesome.
there are changes that need to be made, but they're listening, and within a few months we'll probably have a solid tribes-esque game with a solid mass appeal and fair, not evil monetization/pricing schemes.
It requires a Commodore 64. Soon in the future ZX Spectrum users will see a port of Tribes: Ascend in fully fledged second dimensional graphics that'll blow your mind with it's advanced graphical rendering arrays.
what are you talking about idiot? i asked a simple question, what system this game needs. if you can give an answer, youre more than welcome to do so, if not its just better to not trying to be humorous, especially if youre a pathetic person because it will lead to failure.
i hope now your understanding a little better after the situation been elaborated to you and now can go and fuck peacefully your mother on top of your c64 machine. keep it real
idk what you want man, if you wanna know if it will run on a computer that can run QL but not modern games very well then you'll have no joy, if you have a minimum is a high end duo core and newish gfx card, read up thread what i run which i feel is the minimum
nah im pretty eased tbh
if u want feel free to provide more amusement, tell us about your experiences about old ass computers. try to be humorous again it will be even better
Eased? Then why do you find yourself so inclined to reply to someone who is quite clearly trolling and replying to said person with crystal-clear emotions of anger? Are you bi-polar? I'm not surprised if you are, being a magyar and all.
hey matuka is this your mother or your girlfriend in this pic? these english ladies look all the same to me =(.... oh maybe the two is the same for you so nvm
EDIT: This is the story. Maximizing odds of getting granted a key ftw :-]:
A story from my old Tribes 2 days, then.
Me and my old clan, Xtremity, were having a pcw against a rival team that we would later meet in a more official cw.
The map, semi-irrelevant as it may be, was Sun Dried.
If you ever played Sun Dried in T2, you would know that it's one of the best maps to gain momentum for skiing on.
Me and 3 of my teammates were assigned as being offensive capture units, and so we made our way to the enemy flag, sneaking up behind them by taking a long route around. We had fairly good time, as we had good defensive players at our base, and 2 showering mortars on enemy base.
By the time we reach around 500 meters from enemy base, we order our heavies to stop mortars briefly. Me, scoping in with my laser rifle on the enemy base, could see the enemies peeking out of their buildings. It was immediately clear to me when they came out, that they knew it wasn't because of lack of ammo that mortars stopped, nor was it because they were being attacked, as it was the WHOLE TEAM that was in the base.
So we're looking at them, trying to figure out how to get past them with the least amount of damage taken, and, as a goal, with no deaths before after a capture. While plotting the plan of attack, I zoom in again on the base, and to my surprise they were all gone. Or atleast the majority of them. The curious thing was that they had not even a single medium or heavy nor protecting nor attacking.
I prod off the thought of them having scooped back into their base as it was their chance to get out without getting mortared or having a missile sent to them.
All of the above takes place in the duration of no more than 1 minute, including the disappearance of the enemies.
So anyway, we got our plan and we decide to go for it. All 4 of us take a deep skiing momentum-gainer into the large pit in front of us, and by the time we are airborne again, jetpacks on full throttle, I get a chilly feeling in my spine as I see a green laser pointing towards us, and seconds later a red laser from a laser rifle hits my butt and my health takes a huge toll. Luckily not dead, I rush ahead with my teammates, but we dread what was coming next.
The opposite team had seen us but quietly coordinated their cluelessness up until the very moment we set off to get the flag, so by the time we reach the flag, we realize we have EVERYONE from the opposite team after us, save one who is sniping from their base.
Miraculously I manage to get in and grab the flag without dying in spite of my low health. I had lost 2 teammates during the encounter, so they were respawning and coming my way as soon as they could.
I am speeding ahead towards my base, flag and spinfusor in hand, but as I am speeding ahead on a more flat area of the map, I look to my right and see 2 enemy light armors speeding at a much faster rate than me, and they get in front of me, cutting me and my remaining trailing teammate off, so we cut left, only to see more enemies on that side aswell, so we scoop even more to the left until we finally had a somewhat clear path out. We continue out that path as far as we can without reaching "out of bounds", then continue around and around as much as we can.
For 10 minutes... FOR 10 MINUTES we skiid around, flew around, jump around, dodged around and what not. Incidentally, me, the carrier of the flag, did not at ANY time get damaged since the laser hit. Not even once, not even by machine gun fire. 10 minutes is a long time in a T2 game, so I pride myself in that I survived that long. Eventually my team gave in to my panicked request for backup from as many as possible from the team, and everyone went ahead to help me out. Fortunately for us, they still had all their players after me, so no one tried capping our flag while I was getting aid. We got the cap and all was great but after that I was so tired in my arms, my head, my feet (from crunching up in shear nervousness), my eyes - not blinking more than once a minute - and just about every muscle involved in moving a mouse and tapping a keyboard - that I simply couldn't play any longer. Nor could they though, since they were incredibly tired aswell.
The best, and worst part of it is that it was call captured on film. For the first time, back in 2005 when this happened, I got myself a copy of Fraps. We showed the video to our opponents and ultimately made everyone laugh. The video, intended to be an insult to their utter lack of skill at the time, caused laughter to such a great extent that even to this day, the rivalry we had (or I personally since my clan and I hadn't played together in it) since the days of Starsiege Tribes, 'shook hands'. laid off our differences and stopped being idiots to eachother. To this day I still speak with 2 of the players from the opposing clan, and we talk about this little incident ever so often.
Sadly, the video I compiled of this is now gone, or at least forlorn somewhere in one of my old harddisk drives lying in the attic. I would get the video if I could but to no avail have I searched for it before :<
An octopus walks into a bar and see's a band playing in the corner. He walks up and says "I'm the best musician in the world. I can play any instrument you like".
So the English guy goes "Alright then. Play this" and hands him a guitar. The octopus plays it better than Jimi Hendrix, better than Chuck Berry, better than anyone and hands him back the guitar.
The Irishman says "Okay, how about this?" and shows him to the piano. The octopus sits down and plays it like never before - Better than Jerry Lee Lewis and Elton John. The best pianist ever.
Finally, a Scotsman says "Alright, let's see ya play this then" and hands him a set of bagpipes. The octopus looks at them and fumbles with them. Couple more minutes and he's still struggling and there's no sound coming out. Couple more minutes and still nothing so the Scotsman says "Oh, so can you not play it then?"
And the octopus says "Play it? I'm gonna take her upstairs once I figure out how to get her pajamas off!"
This is the joke (can also be considered a story, but whatever :-D):
Alright, alright, I'll play along as I seriously want in on T:A :-D
Peter, a 1st grader, meets up in class on the first day. The teacher is at the blackboard, writing on it with chalk. As she raises her right arm, little Peter exclaims the question: "Do you shave your armpit?!"
The teacher, disgruntled with the audacity of Peter, says: "That is not a nice thing to ask! Go home and think about this and don't come back until tomorrow!" - hoping that Peter would learn his lesson.
The next day, little Peter arrives in class, and the teacher is wiping the blackboard with her left arm. Peter exclaims the question "Do you shave the other armpit too?!"
The teacher, clearly boiling over Peters continued audacity, tells him "You go home again, Peter, and think about what you've said and how rude it is, and don't come back until you have!"- again hoping Peter will realize that this behavior is not accepted.
The next day Peter arrives in class, and the teacher sees him. She asks him "Have you thought about what you said, and have you learned not to do it again?", to which Peter replies "Yes, miss teacher, I will never do it again."
The teacher, pleased with Peters response, turns to the blackboard, and starts writing on it once more. Suddenly the piece of chalk cracks and falls to the floor. She bends over, reaches for it, and her skirt creeps up slightly. Then she hears the sound of someone fiddling with a schoolbag. Surely enough, Peter packed his schoolbag and without further ado walks to the door, turns around, says "See you in 2nd grade".
shitty configuration compared to quake but thats expected. weapons dont seem too imbalanced. wallhack-like ability to see enemy names thru walls is fucking ridiculous, completely ruins the indoor fights. movement is fun as hell though, got the flag into our base 2398423 times but thanks to the stupid rule that you cant cap without your own flag in the base, hardly any of them resulted in a cap. its just a stupid rule for pub play, qwtf settings were much better.
unlocks are designed in a way that they take so long people get frustrated and put some real money into the game, doesnt promise good things for the competitive scene.
gonna keep playing it for a while to see how it goes, its intriguing but there are so many downsides to the game atm :(
Played it quite some hours now, it's a lot of fun. The vehicles destroy public play atm and some classes seem to have way overpowered (hitscan) weapons. With some tweaks for competitive play it's something I'm looking forward to!
it's very, very fun. however doombringers auto aiming one-hit-kill missile is retarded because not all of the maps have deep enough holes for you to have it hit the ground instead of you. also the vehicles don't feel in place, whereas with t2/t1 it felt like the game was built around the vehicles. the price for most classes is just stupid. I don't see any sense in using a light armor class atm over a medium because the speed difference is negligible for all the extra hp and energy you receive. finally, the rangers GL thing is stupidly powerful, a medium class's secondary weapon shouldn't do that much damage.
ASIDE from that, very fun game for pubbing. I don't see any competitive future for it because of the way classes and perks work.
Got to play it for a few hours last night, it was pretty fun. It definitely feels like the way Tribes should be. I did some config tweaking to get rid of pretty graphics (game runs on the U3 Engine), so that helped a bit.
Switching weapons right now is weird though, if I shoot a disc, switch to shotgun, switch back, I still have to wait for that disc to reload once the weapon is out. It feels very odd right now, I hope they fix that.
Also the only server for North America east is in Atlanta, which both ISP's in my town have shit routing to. I ping like 130, so that wasn't too nice either.
I really hope they give out dedicated servers so people can run servers where ever they want.
Lowering everything in the settings still gave me poor performance. Lots of input lag too. I used this config and I have no input delay. I have a better FPS, but still brutal (25fps).
I haven't got to play it yet but from what I've seen it looks like it could be quite a fun game once you get the hang of the weird floaty movement. I assume there's still alot of buggy things about it like I heard something about mouse input lag problems and big fps drops on some of the maps.
Thats a bug that was in the last patch, got hot fixed later that day but theres still a bug that has slowed the movement down abit, should be fixed soon
I love it, even preordered it so I could get in the beta instantly. Still on holidays without my desktop rig though but I know I'll be playing it pretty often.
This game is super fun. There's tons of changes needed to be done, but they're taking input on the forums.
This is the closest thing to Quake that we have right now that actually has a good sized community. I hope this takes off for competition. The competitive ruleset looks good too, although it's still being worked on.
Can't say I was a fan of what I played. I'll be trying it again when I get back to my PC, but it felt a bit nasty.. The menus especially, they were horrendously ugly, confusing, and didn't work properly, but it's beta and I didn't mind too much. I can't say I was too clued in on the gameplay mechanics though or with Tribes as a whole so like I said, I'll be trying it some more.
Yeah the menus are pretty awful and ugly. But the gameplay is pretty fun. Takes a day or two to get decent at skiing, once that's down the rest comes pretty naturally. Disc Launcher is so fun :D
