i'm guessing you know that tier-slumming has always existed? just now it appears to have a rather silly name. i personally see it as somewhat of a positive that noobs get fucked hard because the ones that persevere tend to become real quakers who love the difficulty. i first started playing q3 with duel against a mate who had played for years and was heavily beat for nigh on 6 months before i could manage a reasonably close match and i then started joining servers with other players where the rape continued. too many cry babies these days. might not be good for business but fuck id anyway.

the path ql is on? i don't need anyone else to explain it for me. it's going to eventually level out at something like q3 levels until they pull the plug or pour funds into improving the service tenfold. quakers will always come back to it because it's simply the best. enjoy it while it lasts, that's mine and i imagine many other's attitudes.

The propoganda that the skill rating system is inaccurate started with the top t5 players in beta. These guys were complaining, because they were all skill 100, yet not the same rating in DUEL, WHICH IS AN ELO RANKED/RATING SYSTEM. and that the players that were skill 100 weren't excatly "equal" in skill...lmao. like that matters.... all the skill 100 in CA means is they are in the top tier and top of their tier. if it was ranked it would show where they stand amongst the other 100s. maybe only show rankings for skill 100 players that would of shut them up haha... same thing. who cares if one 100 is better then another skill 100 players. semantics...garbage propoganda by CHEATERS>>>> SLUM LORDS WHO WANT TO STACK TEAMS!!! common sense ID. real life respect.

These same guys also whined like little girls, that they couldn't find enough matches with 5 tiers in CA. It was a bogus lie. Syncerror and Sponge basically lied when they said they looked at server statistics for population. It was obvious to half of us that we saw plenty of t5 populated servers. enough for everyone to have matches.

It was espeically proven a lie, after they removed the 5th tier, because t4 avgs skill 80+, which is what t5 was. so bey removing t4.....ID ALSO REMOVED ALL THE T4 players from the game!! hahahahahaha literally. booted like at least a quarter of their playerbase right off the bat. the other half thought the game still felt like a beta and not bein taken serious by id, the others left cause they thought the subscription model was either a scam or bad for the game. But not only that there is more t4 servers then t3 especially at off peak hours..... so theres more skill 80+ players then anything in the game, when you factor in all THEIR alts.

These same t5 players also vote only 3v3 or 4v4 matches even when people are in spec. yet they complained there wasn't enough servers or players. Their hypocrites. T4 is the team stack game mode. I get the most competitive matches in t3. true story quakestreme. I saw your thread on t3. I NEVER SEE YOU PLAY THOUGH HOMEY. where you at?? not in america. and in germany they don't have these problems as much, their t4 is proper..... so where u playing at ? not only is there skill 100 rating a more accurate barometer then scouts in real life pro athletic sports, but especially since its only used to place them in a tier for a team game mode, it should not be an issue for a real competitive player.

Coolout, it's simple, but you gotta read this carefully man cuz right now they're getting the better of you. Listen:

1) id doesn't have the resources to further develop the game
2) they only have sponge working on the game full time, while sync maps
3) they have changed back very little in the game (hitboxes/sg pellets) from the way they initially implemented it. The chances they'll fix anything now is remote simply due to the 2 factors above, but also because , in doing so, they'd be admitting those changes were necessary, further exemplifying their lack of testing the first time around.
4) They're simply hanging on till the plug is pulled.

My best advice, and i had to learn this the hard way myself too, just stop caring. Let them destroy the game with inaction and let your wallet do the talking when they release the next game by not buying it. Other than that, it's a wasted battle.

Don't waste anymore time on it man, it'll drive you batty. Let it go.

Those were my normal playhours. I played about 6-7 hours a day. If you check my profile you'll notice i have 3.1 months of playtime, and i haven't played since oct 2010 on that account. Noone else played more games during those hours than me. If you think otherwise, name that other person.

When mellowtab quit, etc etc ... its' a domino effect dude, and i was the catalyst since i was the first of that group to stop playing, albeit not voluntarily.

The bigger problem refers to groups of people doing it together and in doing so; making a mockery of the teambalance in those games.

For example: If joe blow (our tierslummer) enters a game, and joins (strategically) the team with another tierslummer the game becomes unbalanced.

Now imagine scores of people doing this / game (like say 4-5 people). Then imagine that "NOOB", as you call him, TRYING TO LEARN, against 4-5 of these guys.

What is he learning getting demolished in a game like that? is he learning he should know who the better players are? So he joins the right (winning) team next time?

In other words, the only thing a noob can learn from an experience like that is this:

1. he learns to stack/slum
2. he learns this game "isn't fair" after all ,despite the claim on the home page and that if he wants to play someone at his/her own skill level, that he HAS to pay for a subscription and only play with his friends.
3. he learns id can't do anything against anyone violating in-game rules and that they don't enforce/administrate their own servers against racist behavior/teamkillers/etc and as such only react on it when a group of 2 or more people send in demos of said person multiple times with the claim of harassment.
4. he learns and repeats the same behavior by "doing unto others" what others have "done unto him".
5. he learns id doesn't care about public servers and only give 2 shits about anyone if they are subscribed to the game.
6. he learns how to uninstall the game

All in all, putting the blame on the newcomer instead of on the person(s) responsible for creating such a system ( the developers) whose job it is to maintain/admistrate these servers, is sad beyond belief. It' almost sounds like you support hazing these noobs for initiation purposes. Sadly, these "hazings" never stop for these noobs. That's exactly how mellowtab/mevil were treated for the longest time. 2 of the few noobs i know who have stuck it out, besides myself, 1 of which has since finally quit (mellowtab).

These hazings aren't giving the newcomer any reason to continue and it is EXACTLY WHY PEOPLE ARE QUITTING THIS GAME within weeks of signing up.

One of the main reasons people are scared of playing the game properly is because of stats. In Quake 3 there were no ranks or leader boards. It was just join, play for a while, leave. Players in Quake Live today worry too much about their accuracies, K/D ratio, W/L ratio, and such.

Stats and tiers ruined the game, in my opinion. I mean, sure, there's a line to be drawn between beginners and pros. But is there even a difference beyond that? Either you're good or not good enough. That's how I've always seen it.

Tier-slumming happens in "Tier 4" (read: Tier-slumming happens in tiers 4 to 100).

it's simple.

Quake live pits noobs and veterans in the same games. There is no skill matching system (it's broken).

There aren't even 4 tiers in most modes anymore (certainly not in ca, tdm or ctf). Only duel has 4+ tiers.

When someone signs up on quakelive.com they automatically get placed in tier 3. Now this would work if the q3 veteran wasnt'a ble to play in any other tiers, but his own (tier 4). But as it stands now, in CTF at least, THEY CAN.

The only way a noob can escape the "tierslummers" (veterans) is by losing 15 games in a row on purpose to go down to tier 2...

BUT

and this is where the whole system is fail.

The moment a few tier 3 players enter a tier 2 game (cuz they can play a tier down as well), the cv rating (rating of all players in game combined) raises. The moment it's above 50, it becomes a tier 3 game and....

... enter tierslummer 1..... (veteran #1 ala a tier 4 player)

moments later (once the sv rating goes up 5 more points)...

....enter tierslummer 2 (veteran #2 aka another tier 4 player)

as you can tell, it's a neverending battle that noobs simply cannot escape from. There is no safe haven for them anymore.....

AND WORSE YET....

it only takes a couple wins, or a couple 1st place scores to get ranked back up to tier 3. Hell, if he figures out how to stack, the noob can easily get himself in tier 4 (if he wanted to).

Overall, the whole system is irrepairable and exhausting for people to even describe since most people focus on the sv_rating of individual players instead of focusing on the simple fact that id has not done one simple thing....

FIX CTF; TO INCLUDE: dissalowing players to tier down like they dissalowed in CA (clan arena).

CTF has been totally neglected by id software inc (the developers) and as such, most of the people unhappy with this game come from that mode, (ffa second).

Doesn't feel too much different to me, other than the lack of viewable games at a decent ping.

granted it is 430am, but there have always been at least 7-15 games going on at this time

if i come into a server and start mowing people down, it isnt something personal. It took me a long time to get pretty good at this game, and you arent going to make me feel bad because you cant hang.

If he is getting "slaughtered every game" then he needs to get better, or accept the fact that other people are much better than him.

No more than two servers of ctf that I can join on a saturday night. And one's in dallas, where I get too high ping.

Skill matching is a myth id. You will never perfect it and people will always complain regardless. I think it's more important to have more games than have every game try and be as even as possible. Fewer and fewer people will play when they sit around not playing.... seems obvious to me.

In looking back at that thread, KETNAR, DEADAIM, CHIBERS and INCUBUS were the biggest critics and as such doomed ctf as sponge was forced to cave in to their demands. You can see how much influence they had over the devs when most noob and mid range players (the swampys, etc) were happy with the changes. Tucker's attitude pretty much sums the quake community up.

Yesterday at 8pm I wanted a game of FFA, only to see that there were barely two servers in Europe with people playing on them.

Let's clarify.

That thread was announcing an experimental new system for joining servers based on tiers. The system lasted for roughly a weekend, and it was terrible because no one could find a game to join.

Tiers and rankings and all that shit have never worked in ANY FPS game. Why id continues to try and use it is beyond me. It just gives people the right to get mad when they are getting shit on in public servers.

Get rid of tiers, and anyone who can't deal with getting better can just fuck right off. You think I was never bad at this game? Now I'm better, and I'm called a "tierslummer" and blamed for ruining this game. You just can't win. Either your getting shit on completely, or, if you are better, every one of your games are scrutinized by some loon and posted on ESR trying to "expose" you.

there were 5 tiers for a year in beta. beta was great noone, including me every had a complaint.

then the game went live and everything changed.

Noone believes you didn't have enough servers to play. and the proof is in the pudding.

and i'm constanlty explaining. tier 4 in CA avgs over skill 80+.

that means the majority of players are at the t5 level from beta dude.

and not only this... in off peak hours. there is more t4 servers then t3.

Also again, all of the problems are because QL uses a skill matching system to begin with. If you don't have tiers, there is no reason to create alt accounts in order to beat on noobs.

Skill match systems haven't worked in any FPS. They just encourage people to cheat the system so that they can beat on shitty players, and give new players a reason to hate the game.

I agree tiers were a bad idea. "A" system of some kind could have been conceived to at least foster the new player to make him battle ready. But tiers, or no tiers, the game, as it is currently setup in certain modes, allow people to dictate their agressions out on weaker players to intimidate and what i feel , in essence, to be a form of harassment. Someone going 100-2 in a game, and then repeating that behavior the following game, is not playing a game of quake live, he's simply mimicking something he probably does in real life on school grounds when he asks the nerd for his lunch money.

It just appears, from my perspective, that quake inhabits these people more than anything else; bullies. This is the "whining" that people speak about all the time. There's no comradery in this game, and to find it, is fleeting. Sure the noob can suck it up and deal with it for a while, but ultimately he's forced into an ultimatum of sorts. To sub, or to quit the game. Most chose the latter, probably because premium servers didn't stop the bleeding.

I understand your point, and i agree with it in part, but the part people continue to neglect is the lack of administrative responsiblity that id software as a reputable company has to ensure "kids" / young adults don't get treated like bantha fodder in their own game, a game they have, and continue to advertise as "noob friendly" and a game that claims it's skill matching system allows people to play against others at their own skill level.

If they're going to do away with tiers, that damaging text should be done away with on the home page as well, it's just a lie and it personally offends me to no end.

Wrong, the server doesn't change regardless of who enters. They changed that in one of the updates. Sponge can back me up on that one: "<@sponge>pikaluva13: no servers don't change tiers anymore"

45-60 is t3.... although that includes t4 slummers and brand new accounts. so t3 is basically the free for all everyone almost unrestricted tier in reality.....

and t4 is 60-100. which is the old beta t4 and t5 combined. which is too much of a wide skill gap.

pay no attention to the color of the server. It doesn't mean crap anymore.

if you want to know what lvl the server is your on...type /serverinfo.

only one correction coolout. I believe it starts at 50. I've never seen a game with a rating below 50, ever (in over 8,000 games of ctf). Maybe its' diff in ca.

as i said: maybe in ca , i've personally never seen it below 50 in ctf. Maybe it's lower cuz of the larger population in clan arena, Hell for all we know it could vary server to server. Id probably has some backend data showing the # of users playing on each server. Would be a lot upkeep however...

its' in a bit of an uptick at the moment. Probably not in the u.s, but in europe, due to dreamhack, etc, it'll stay stable for a while.

in one of the updates... the servers tier stays static. the tier lvl of the server in the browser no longer changes when players join it.

but as you admit yourself the skill rating does change though of course, so the fact the color of the server doesn't change means nothing. in reality if you join a t4 server and it says skill 50... its really t3... cause some newby guys just dropped the rating all the way down. or vice versa....

not having locked tiers.... only rewards the dishonest players in this game.

Today I decided to play some sc2 1v1. I got FUCkING DESTROYED by this kid who was top 50 platinum league or something. After the game i challenged him to a duel on Quake Live. Naturally he declined.

What amazed me the most was that starcraft placed me into the Gold league....how ? The system is definitely broken. I haven't played the game in over a year.

but the diff is if you can't keep making new accounts to do that. you will be banned..... you stick with one account and eventually your not longer bronze stage.

i try to stay a bit more coherent. it's only when somone pushes my buttons that i sound like i'm raging, even though i'm not, that's when the similiarities with cooloutac are made. I only don't know where cooloutac stands anymore but the only thing, the one thing, that he tends to reiterate is that, compared to sports, ql places division 3 collegiate players vs a pro players with their skillmatching system.

Regardless of the exceptions and the similiarities in other games (cuz skillmatching , from a developers point of view is a nightmare), i'm of the believe that skillmatching should just be done away with entirely and i am actually going to simply refer to a really good thread i read recently that probably makes more sense than anything else anyone can say on the matter.

The thread refers to removing losses from the equation (profile stat page) and moreover by 1) adding a disclaimer on the home page (for the disseminating noob who cries fairness 24/7) that the game is very difficult and 2) removing the lie that you can easily play against others at your own skillevel which INSECT carefully points out in the 3rd reply in that thread is a joke.

Dont' get me wrong, i'd prefer a game with some sort of skillmatching but what i'm talking about now refers simply to doing away with the system, for the sake of the game. The system they currently use hasn't worked. Agree?

in lamens, no, i didn't say ql or games in general shouldn't have skill matching, In a game with a healthy community, YES; but this game is far from healthy, and based on what we have now, or better put, what this game has turned into, change is necessary and the removal of tiers is a big enough change to perhaps become a catalyst for something better to come along based on its results. Consider the act as a litmus test. It's the only id hasn't tried and who knows, it may just work.

The change will wake some people up to the realities of the situation. The tierslummers won't have guaranteed tier 3 servers to slum on anymore. The stackers will be forced to make new alliances and the noobs will be put in the middle of a power struggle. in essence, the game will become a free for all, as it probably should have been in the first place in many respects since it's a death match game....gasp

If the playerbase was big enough, then skillmatching would have had a chance to work, but as it stands now, in NA especially, something has to change and removing the tiers once and for all will allow that change to occur and it will desegregate many factions from each other increase the number of games shown on the server list, especially in ca and ffa where tiers are more segregated than ever.

Not everything works the way its intended for, so don't lose hope that a better system can't arise out of the chaos resulting from its removal. if it gets removed.....

of course i've never been there, i'm not crazy enough to hop on a plane to travel across the country for it.

q3 is free to play (f2p) .... it is not subscription based. if you don't already own it it costs less then 8 bucks. or nowadays you can just download the game for free and get a free key.

and all maps are free including community made maps and mods.

they only thing subscribing to the p2p browser game, that is ql, does.... is support companies getting rid of modders so they can make milk more money off of mapmaking themselves, and lining the pockets of the 2 or 3 devs involved with this game, that don't respect it enough to take fair play and competitive matches seriously.... like other more popular companies do.

What you don't get is that someone has to pay for a server. And THAT is what you're paying for with a QL Pro subscription.

I've never paid for a server in 15 years of playing quake. noone i know has either.

implying some newb will have to rent a q3 server when theres actually still plenty of empty ones running even till this day is deceitful.

and even if you actually have enough friends to fill up a 10 slot server. its a dollar a slot. so it would cost everyone 12 dollars a year.

a hell of alot cheaper... where you can invite any player... play on any map and any mod. have way more admin controls... keep it up 24/7...etc...

you can play community made maps even.

besides the gameplay improvements. ql is a scam in every other aspect and its a shame. cause the game is so great in itself.
