For me, Heroes of Newerth, hands down. I didn't listen to the "naysayers" and decided to give it a go. Makes QL look like a wonderful, intelligent congregation of happy individuals.

It will be the same players playing the game you know. The game will breed the same kinds of type of raging and flaming players since one teammates insufficiency will lead to a loss for the entire team, and this loss may prolong for up to an hour, while you can't leave the game. Valve can't do anything about that and it will 100% be the same story all over again with Dota 2.

Btw I love mobas (especially HoN) and I am in the Dota 2 beta, so I am not trying to bash the genre, just stating what is obvious.

In d2 there is a system where players can "upvote" helpful and nice people and "downvote" flamers. This "score" then involves in the matchmaking search, which means that nice people often play with nice people and idiots often play with idiots :)

This motivates people to be nice, and if you aren't, you will end up with flamers and bashers.

D2 has a similar system to leavers, solving the playing with leavers problem pretty damn good!

Valve make good systems, I'm sure that the true value of a downvote has to do with how you usually vote. I.e. if you often get along with people (people upvote you and you upvote people who also got upvoted by others during the same game), your downvotes have a bigger overall effect. Likewise if you downvote people very often while other people downvote you, your vote is worth close to nothing.

Just speculations of what I think valve would do. Nothing I got facts on. Interesting "solution" to rude communities.

Hehe, I'm used to refresh/ctfpug types. Been playing with them since ~06, so I'm used to it or even one of them xd. And as you say, its pretty similar to quake style anyways.

im talking about the "full force" players. they dont use guns, just saber and force, and play saber/force duels in FFA. gameplay is 100% different from full force+full guns ctf, and they have their own community there. Like i said in my earlier post, just not my style :p.

If you got turned off by the refresh community but enjoyed the game, feel free to add me on xfire: xencrypt. There are some of us that are chill :). pugs(pickups) happen almost every day on euro servers.

The french fighting games community. 90% shittalking scrubs looking for a real fight. Dunno how it's now ( stopped hanging around it before shit fighter 4 was released on consoles and gave up a couple months after said release ) but I highly doubt even the massive influx of newcomers has changed anything. Online messages were $$$.

Ohwait, something has changed : now they really can't tell a good game apart from a bad one.

Hmm Russian (and Belarus+Ukraine ofcourse) fighting games community was the best. I've got many good friends out of it, we were travelling to other countries, playing non stop while having some great laugh, partying etc. There were almost no dicks or arrogant people at all. Was really good times.
We were playing GGXX , Tekken and Soul Calibur series mostly though,

In short, you play with assholes because you play as badly as them. It's the same as playing with tier1 or 2 players (can't see those servers).

There are kids in every game, but 95% of them are bad players. Get a bit better and you'll esee the other side (composed by troll try hards)

HoN will always be that way. I didn't think I could possibly find a community worse than LoL, until I was urged to pick up that game from a few friends who were, and still are, absolutely NUTS about it.

Racism, anti-semitism, sexism, and general rudeness pervade even the unranked public matches. I made the mistake of saying, word for word: "Hey guys, sorry if I make a few mistakes, I'm new here! :)" and got trolled and booted over the next thirty seconds for not being a professional.

WoW community isn't so terrible as long as you're in a good PvP or raiding guild. The general server populations outside of guild chat can be horrifying to witness though. Or funny, however you look at it.

Tribes: Vengeance community. Checked the game out again after a friend talked about it, and I couldn't believe the sheer amount of trolls and admin abusers. You'd literally get banned if someone thought you cheated or if you didn't respond instantly to an admin.

you still had to be able to configure your machine and write configs and read some tutorials to get some games running ...
also you needed to get server-ip's, etc. ...
nowadays all this is done automatically from the os to the game configuration ...

It's the same for any game having no depth or appropiate measurement of skill or competition.

For example in Quake when u get raped by a guy who also being raped by another who get raped by a semi-pro who get raped by Strenx, its hard to conclude you're any good. Kind of the reason why the game is unpopular.

The current Australian quake community is pretty shit. I only started playing quake in 2004 but the difference is massive now. A whole lot of older and more mature players left the scene and moved on. The result being getting stuck with a whole bunch of fuck wit kids and derelicts like diabz. I'm showing my age.

CS! everytime i tried to play this game casually, i'd be instantly put off just by joining a server (and downloading some shit mod with retarded custom sounds)

the first thing you'd read in chat were cheating accusations thrown around in every direction, then a lot of mindless shit talk and ban threats from people with pointlessly complicated 1337 nicknames

..but nowdays, the internet is infested all-around with these unintelectual intestinal worms

Heh, that happened to me... once.

I felt as though I'd stepped into the twilight zone.

Too bad the next 30 matches had people saying horrendous things at others and mostly at me (because I was new) and vote kicking left and right and treating the game as though the lives of those in the match depended on the outcome. I bailed, and didn't look back.

Its not accurate to consider an entire game a community.

For example, most FPS games communities are built around the server you frequent. And you see the same people there and you play with them for months/years.

In WoW your community is usually considered your server or even just your guild depending how populated the server is.

From my experience, there are always people who want you to have a bad day, and be the biggest dick as possible. No matter where you go you'll find them, and unfortunately they're usually the most vocal.

You can't let that ruin your experience. There is plenty of people in every game who play to have fun, chat with friends, improve their gaming skills.

I assume whatever is attractive to generic+young - cs, hon, etc. It's got more to do with individual taste than location.

Fighting games is full of retarded wiggers/niggers, but the primitive drama element enhances the experience for the outside viewer.

I don't really enjoy many scenes, even here I'm starting to see some generation gap. I loved the tongue-in-the-cheek vibe of this site but mainly Demiurge got sand in his vagina from something and fucked it up. Now he sucks dicks of 18-year-old french gays with crummy english, or whoever is registering to this site atm. Last decent user was the english dude, Inferno or somitheng starting with I.

Oh man, I remember HoN... the game itself was really fun for me, but the community killed off any hopes of playing for a long time. Grew sick of being bitched at in a far worse way than I had ever experienced in any other game, even when I was getting better.

Unfortunately I have a feeling that LoL and DotA 2 aren't any better.

LoL will start you off in low-level games tho.

when i played a bit of hon, everyone started with 1500points (when i should probably have had 200points, good players starting at 1900) and then you would get kickvoted and trampled on and then at some point i had a k:d ratio so bad, people wouldnt even let me play along and just cuss at me and kick me befor the game started..

it was the first moba i played, but getting into it was impossible. the only way to get a fun game going wwas if i knew atleast 2 of my teammates.

Like many others have said, HoN is really bad. It has alot to do with the design of that game though, you rely so much on your teammates and if you end up in a bad team you have to sit out the whole game while not having fun.

Mobas are really fun to play with friends but generally make for some of the worst experiences in public games.

I completely agree, which is why I tend to stick to shooters. Time limits for how long rounds last (generally), and you don't rely on your teammates in most game modes *nearly* as much as you do in moba games.

I love HoN, but solo queuing in matchmaker is a death wish unless you're in a ridiculously good mood. By the end, you'll be in a pretty shitty one.

Same goes for LoL and DotA.
