There are lots of decent Linux based routers out there; which you could easily find by selling your old pc which can more than likely do whatever you currently lack as well as having large user run sites for help/support whom will have encountered and solved every problem you will ever have setting it up.

Even a Linux based router with an old NAS would be easier/cheaper than doing what you are proposing IMO.

The only real advantage you gain is setting up QoS (Quality of Service) for yourself. You can assign port numbers to a packet priority, meaning that if you want anything coming out of port 27960 to be first in line, you can. You will be able to play Quake online with other people downloading, and you won't have to worry about ping spikes or massive lag because of everyone else downloading.

But a $50 router can do that. You're better off turning another PC into a server, maybe a web server, file server, game server, who knows. You have lots of options.

Just buy a good router and install OpenWrt. It will be more energy efficient and - most importantly - silent:)
(please note that heavy torrenting (with lots of connections) won't go faster than 3-4Mbyte/sec, you need a NAS for that)

Is that coming from one connection, or from hundreds of clients? Or what kind of a router is that? And what kind of a torrent client did you upload to the router?

what kind of "info" do you want? set up Linux, set up networking, iptables, whatever, and you're done. if you don't know already how to do all of that, it's probably not a good idea. I'm not sure what exactly you're trying to ask.

- Dir-825 (you can mod it to a WNDR3700 (128Mb mod also required), it's tricky to make a second usb port but it's doable.
- WNDR3700 basically the expensive version of the Dir-825 (you have to make extra antennas)
- RT-N16 not openwrt, but you can do the same with a custom firmwire (no dualband)
- Linksys E4200 uses BroadCom chip which is my favorite:)

Those are good routers but none of them can handle heavy torrenting by themselves alone, what kind of a router do you have what can do what a NAS or a computer can do?

At the moment I have a w-lan router and a modem in one box, which is pretty handy. Is there any advantage in having both seperatly? Otherwise I found two routers which include everything I want and also an annex b modem.

The Buffalo runs with DD-WRT. The Netgear doesn't seem to support any form of custom firmware yet. Would you recommand one of these?

If you know computer stuff and don't need 100Mbit torrent speeds, a nice "hacked" router could come really handy because you can configure it any way you want, and it can also silently download things for you as well. (single threaded downloads can go with full speed ofc). You can read/ask more about openwrt hardware compatibily/modding here

But if you need more than that, you are better go with a little server. (I have an ionitx based silent server/htpc box with a dualcore atom which is more than enough)

Running your old PC just for routing at home is an overshoot, and you should only do it for curiosity/learning purposes imo:)

yea tomato is preferable with RT-N16 for example.

What Gillz said. There isn't a lot of point to what you're trying to do. It only adds unnecessary complexity to your home network. I have an ancient single-core AMD machine with 1.5gigs of RAM running FreeBSD and its much more useful for other things:

- IRC host (I have irssi in a tmux session, so that I don't have to log in/out. just ssh over and attach it)

- Minecraft server (huge memory hog, but FreeBSD has been better about not choking on it than Linux ever was)

- CoD4/Quake3/Whatever LAN server for when I have small get-togethers.

- Some file storage, although it has a small HDD. I'm too cheap to upgrade it.

As for latency, technically yeah you will see some since you would be adding an extra hop (unless you want to spend a bunch of money/time fiddling with tons of network interfaces your current router is still going to be involved), but it would likely be small. 2-10ms depending on how fast the box is and how much shit you have it doing I would guess.

As for OS, there are tons out there, just search around. I prefer BSD for things like this personally, but in virtually any case the "best" OS to use is the one you're familiar with. The most perfectly tailored linux distro or BSD firewall is useless if you don't know how to use it. Here's a list:

What gillz said is exactly what I wanted to do. I am sharing my connection with 2 other guys who like to watch streams and do torrent from time to time.
My current router only allows me to lock their ports. But I don't want to lock them completly, only adjust their up and down speeds when they are powerusing.
You guys convinced me I should better look out for a router where I can install some custom WRT firmware.

Just don't expect perfect experience from QoS, it's a handy thing, but it won't be the same compared to times when the others don't use the net:)

Its worth a try, but for the record QoS never did anything noticeable for me -- I most definitely could not game while other people were torrenting regardless of QoS settings.

Weird, it's always worked for me flawlessly. Maybe once your bandwidth is maxed out, you'd get issues.

it's also depends on the ISP.

I use my Debian server as router (connected a wireless switch to it as well).

I also use it as a webserver, file-hosting, IRC-bouncer and then I host a few game servers.

It's not impossible to set up, and the result is great. Now I just have my computer for playing games and watching movies while my server takes care of the rest.

You should try http://pfsense.org/ - it has both free (community) and for-pay support available, is very well documented and is pretty much point-and-click.

I use pfsense but I also have a 100/100 connection. If I had a slower connection I just wouldn't bother and would use a cheap ddwrt solution.
