i was taking tga screens of different xhairsizes and zooming them once and size 51 (at 800x600) has the least transparent exactly 1 pixel wide black edge around it while keeping the same sized non-transparent inside area as size 41
Another thing which I've started to use recently (and that I REALLY like), is a +alias on mouse1; I have keel as my default enemy, and when I hold down mouse1 it changes enemy model to tankjr; really nice for lg/mg/plasma :)
bind mouse1 "+attack;+enemy"
alias +enemy "cg_forceenemymodel tankjr/bright;cg_zoomsensitivity 1"
alias -enemy "cg_forceenemymodel keel/bright;cg_zoomsensitivity 0"
I use a +zoom config; lowers the sense slightly when firing with the toggle of zoom sense 1 and 0
I've got it for all weapons, but it wouldn't be hard to have just for the hitscan weapons, could write a little script for you np is your interested.
i dont like to mess with my sens too much because I'm already having troubles adjusting again. due to new mouse pad and hitbox change I had to mess a lot with sens lately / as well as accel. but I am starting to get somewhere.
wasn't talking about duel. Duel has spam and then actual lg accuracy. Cypher/spartie/strenx etc hit 40+ all the time, however they spam it off, so u can't actually calculate how much acc they have for shaft.
I was asking if he hits 40+ lg vs people in like ca/ctf etc. Where ppl don't exactly spam lg at doors.
i hit 40lg in duel even vs good opponents. but sometimes it depends on the maps/lg usage/spam/positioning. so after all stats do not matter as long as you win or do enough damage. on ztn there are a lot ways to hit good shaft whereas on t4 its hard to hit any shaft.
I use Cypher's xhair from IEM. It's got different layers to give it the effect the corners are slightly rounded, I adjusted it (what a pain) for 1600x1200. It's pretty much spot on to xhair 2 at size 44-46 in CPMA. Hitbeep is enough for me.
Yeah the top and bottom are both very slightly off to the left. But I couldn't see any difference trying to adjust it by hundredths. The smallest amount I could get anything to move at all is two tenths. I also made another one from the IEM xhair, resembles the q3a xhair 3 at 40. I use the smaller one, but in magenta.
I think for now I am gonna try the simple crosshair and then If that does not work out, I'll use cyphers for a while. I don't like to aim with dots especially with rail - I just cant seem to hit with it.
hahahah nice :DDD, it worked for me too and i was messing around with the crosshairs when i foud that combination, anyway at least something good from quake 4 on quake live ;)
ive had similar accs before its not a big deal. but it the cross felt good even when i lost track for a few seconds. i might increase the size a bit though. at times it felt a bit too small.
yellow model + medium gamma (like 0.7-0.8) + high picmip + lightmap + some postprocessing like more saturation does the best job for me. just got used to it (been playing with vertex and white models in q3)
why would that be? tell me? i mean if you can hardly see the model (with postprocess 0 it is really bad for instance) i just feel more comfortable with glowy models :D but each their own!
I just use a yellow little cross, I don't really think the crosshair is important, more the thinshaft, drawgun, sens and fov. (Oh and I like the crosshair turning red.)
Consistently getting between the high 30's and mid 40's for the last few months.
set w6 "weapon 6 ; cg_DrawCrosshair 2 ; cg_CrosshairSize 30"
It's not like acc tells much anyways. I myself spam LG alot in duels and therefore shaft mid 20 or low 30ish, but I mostly shaft around 45 in CA. Do you dare to tell your accountname?
My RL has always been my biggest weakness, so ever since I started playing quake in 08 I've been using shaft alot. I force myself to use it less and RL more these days tho =).
I change my fov and keys alot, but my graphics I only change every few years. My graphics has been the same since I started Quakelive. And my OSP/CPMA config was from like 2002.
It replaces crosshair 2, so just cg_drawcrosshair 2;cg_crosshairsize 0. Ofc you can change the crosshair it replaces if you'd like. Also, it's alligned for 800x600, it may be completely fucked up for other pc's / resolutions.
I love this crosshair, it's a great one. It's looking fairly bad in 1024*768 just like you suggested it would though.
Any chance it could be reworked a bit to make it look like less of a square and more of a cross in that res ? I really don't know how to work with that .menu file.
Also, I assume this is normal not having any crosshair when speccing or watching a demo (without going back to the previous crosshairize I mean).
I tried re-alligning it a bit for 1024x768 but I couldn't get it to work properly. It's a fucking tedious process. Just try your hand at the .menu file, most of the codes are pretty straight-forward.
I actually wanted to make something between those 2 sizes but it would mean you use a decimal (I believe this is the right word :>) number for the size of the crosshair and it seems if you do that, you can't get the cross right in the center. It's always a bit off the center and if you change the axe x/y values, you can't center it right, it's always either too much on the right or too much of the left even if I was using decimal numbers, it always jumps from the "too much on the left" to the "too much on the right" and you can't center it no matter what.
I believe this is because of the res and it looks somehow much simpler in 800*600 than in 1024*768
Maybe I'm just wrong and I've done something wrong but this is the best I could end up with so far.
If you are interested in any of those two, just reply back and I'll share it.
Also considering to make a slightly larger dot for the thin version.
I tried, but failed miserably :) as you said, I had also "too much on the right" or "too much on the left" and got to the point where everything was looking rather meh, so I got pissed off and haven't tried further anything.
I'm interested in the thin one, looks really neat :) might share it?
I've made another version with a bigger dot this time. This one looks much more like solar's one. The yellow bars can be smaller a little to look like even more like solar's but I like it that way.
I can't get the yellow xhair a little larger, it always jumps from the too thin to too large so this is probably the best we can end up with in that res.
Been playing recently with crosshairs flashing and not flashing. I never really thought about it much but I tend to aim by focusing on player models rather then focusing on the crosshair (as I guess a lot of people do) and thought 'hey, the flashing might be distracting'
To be honest though, no difference. Hitting the same LG % as with flashes or whatever. I've finally got used to the hitboxes again so I'm hitting 40-45% on most pubs and 35-40% on pickups or whatever. Gonna leave it for a while though and see if it improves without flashes :|
Use the big open + for most weapons (similar to what I use in CS1.6), a dot for rail (what I use in DOD1.3) and a small open + for plasma (dunno why, just seem to leave it) What I want is something like the last screenshot which I use for CS. Used to use it on cpma as well (crosshair 2 or something aint it?). Occasionally use the (+) sometimes for all weapons.
I try not to fuck too much around with cfg though. If my aim is off, I might change the crosshair to the (+) or maybe to yellow/cyan colour, but overall, I just leave it.
I prefer to see the crosshair when I aim on the model i.e. I use a yellow crosshair and not a green one. I guess it is because I aim focusing on the model rather than the crosshair. So when the crosshair is hardly visible anymore I probably will lose track, or at least that is what my brain thinks. Maybe.
that looks like lightningimpact 1, i'd get rid of that if you aim by following the model (impact 1 means huge flashy blop no matter if you just hit an enemy or the wall).
I've since turned it off and switched to the thin picmip shaft and haven't really noticed too much difference. I guess the impact just helps to determine if you're actually hitting distance or not (as if the hitbeep wouldn't give you a hint anyway...)
I use lightningimpact 0 like toxjq. Without it i lg 35% with it i lg 40+.
Probably because i focus on my crosshair more than beam/enemy and it helps me just control my mouse and strafe easier.
Seeing the beam 'not hit' for a millisecond used to make me react (since i have godlike reaction speed, that ppl call me bot for) so those actually fucked me up, cuz ppl going left-right-left-right really bothered me, and i used to aim at them.
With lightningimpact 0 i just chill, keep cross on ur ass and u die before i even know what happened.
massive beam = tricks yourself into not moving mouse too much when players do left-right-left-right strafe patterns. This is how i catch newbs, hardly even touching my mouse.
Nah. I used to have a slightly smaller beam (still big tho) in the right side of the screen, set with differentt gunX, Y and Z cvars. But when using the one I liked the most I was able to see other guns in lower left corner when switching to shaft after one of these weapons were on cooldown.
I couldn't find any combination the gunX/Y/Z settings that allowed me to have a big thick shaft without being able to see other gunmodels at switching, so I just changed to drawgun 0 for the shaft aswell. Later I realized that didn't aim with the beam but just the crosshair and that I don't even notice it's real size when focusing on the dodging enemy. So this big is just as good as the one that was a bit smaller.
There is another good thing about this big beam, and that is that when playing with drawgun 0 (which I use for every other weap), the beam won’t change appearance when switching to it while holding mouse1 pressed, like the beam does when playing with drawgun 1-2.
/*
Remade l1nkin crosshair.

Change the custom crosshair value to "99".
Fixed perfect lining and centering (one pixel to left and one pixel downwards).
*/
menuDef {
name "Crosshair"
rect 320 240 32 32
fullScreen MENU_FALSE
visible MENU_TRUE
It is optimized for 1024*768 (also mentioned in the file). I haven't tried it with many resolutions, but I do know that it doesn't go well with 800*600.
Well the config is kinda outdated. I don't use Cyphers xhair anymore but cg_drawcrosshair 3 instead with size 55. Cyphers xhair is still in my HUD however and is activated with drawcrosshair 99, size 0. I use keel now and my HUD has been re-arranged (changed location of HP, Armor, ammo and the timer). If you want it still i have uploaded it here:
I'm using this atm :
"weapon 6;cg_drawgun 0;cg_fov 103;cg_drawCrosshair 7;com_blood 1;cg_crosshairsize 29;cg_forceenemymodel keel/bright;sensitivity 3.65;cl_mouseaccel 0;cg_zoomfov 90;cg_zoomSensitivity 0.5;cg_filter_Angles 0.02"
but i wanted to try simple crosshair too
Thanks for the lgglreset, gonna add it right now since i have lg on wheelup like u :)
Would someone be kind enough to post Cypher's big cross .menu file?? I tried to make one on the online hud maker (forgot what the website is called) but I couldn't get the dimensions right, and it was off-center.
this is the old one, link1n has made a prettier one for 800*600 which has rounded edges (or had it made by someone, ofc)
also it looks like it's off a bit from the rect values for me
Circle with dot inside is bo$$. It doesnt take much space, making far distance shots possible, while still be highly visible due to the circles circumference.
For the people using Cypher/link1n's crosshair, I was the one who made it, I didn't realise anyone other than link1n himself used it until I saw Cypher's config yesterday. I can just upload it somewhere for you if you want and resize it for other resolutions if needbe. I'm going to be doing a fair big of HUD fucking for the first time in a while over the next wee while.
I use the original version on 1920x1080 and find it perfect. It may not be as originally intended due to the resolution, but it I like it and I'm used to it (most important). The only thing I've done to it is put black borders, these I've come to realise are not aligned properly on other resolutions other than 1920x1080p:
Thanks. Thanks to J0Z, it's actually fancy as shit now. I'll be updating the post with the new update, re-uploading to qlhud.core.ws, and maybe make a post here if there's any use in doing it.
cg_drawcrosshair 2 with custom made circle, that way i can have any size i want on either inner and circle without it affecting the other and best of all, it doesnt blink!!!!!!!! |-]
massive amont of custom xhairs, most are made for 1024 res, except some i "made" myself which is basicly only repositioning some lines. dont even remember which ones i did alter :/
i dont know if its exactly what u are looking for, but if u use r_overbrightbits "2" the white ring becomes really solid, almost blocking out the black borders completely
Sorry for being such a noob bbut ive set my hud to load the jonezrd.menu and when i go ingame and use cg_drawcrosshair 27/106/202/206 nothing happens exept sometimes it changes to a small dot :z
bind mouse2 "+myzoom"
set ch_q4zoomxhair "0"
alias +rgzoom "cg_zoomfov 70; cg_zoomsensitivity 0.8; +zoom"
alias -rgzoom "-zoom"
alias +rlzoom "cg_zoomfov 100; cg_zoomsensitivity 1; +zoom"
alias -rlzoom "-zoom"
alias +dzoom "cg_zoomfov 85; cg_zoomsensitivity 1; +zoom"
alias -dzoom "-zoom"
set rgz "alias +myzoom +rgzoom; alias -myzoom -rgzoom"
set rlz "alias +myzoom +rlzoom; alias -myzoom -rlzoom"
set dz "alias +myzoom +dzoom; alias -myzoom -dzoom"
to make it smaller or bigger change the rect under name "circle" to something like -2.5 -2.5 37 37, -2 -2 36 36, -1.5 -1.5 35 35 and so on.
after long playing with what i wrote in http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=2063194#pid2063194 i noticed 1 problem. Since that xhair wasnt usable with rail due to enormous size i couldnt really aim with rail constantly changing xhairs on that weapon. Different xhairs just don't work for me prolly, so i decided to switch to some single xhair for ALL weapons. After browsing different cfgs i really couldn't find a better alternative to my fav red cross, which i simply wanted being smaller(which A LOT of ppl use). But as I said above I didnt really like how it looks on smaller sizes having semi-transparent borders around red area so after some brainstorm and taking several tga screenshots i made a semi-custom one, it's basically size 37, but with a black hud cross under it surrounding the red area exactly by 1 pixel like on size 51 which I've always enjoyed. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11777259/crosshairs.jpg http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11777259/skrin.png
overall it pretty much looks like an improved k1llsen's xhair(actually also liked gfx and some other stuff so I took it aswell -..-), which he also uses on all weapons, can upload if someone likes this
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11777259/h8m3.rar
xhairs only work properly when you use 800x600 and they're not changed automatically, you gotta use cg_drawcrosshair 22, 27, 26(dot is prolly too huge though, but tba adjusting since i dont use it)
as for hud itself - that's a mix of old fox' ammo/health/armor bar with jones' hud and some other edited stuff
keel is totally inside the hitbox, tankjr tends to stick out of it a bit, even when standing still.
It's better since the last hitbox update but there was really no point using tankjr from dec 2009 to a few months ago with the skinny hitboxes.
Loadbias fucks up the details/geometry of the models iirc, which makes it a nice placebo for all the anal people who take screenshots of playermodels to see if the left hip is within the hitbox or not at an angle of 97°
I tried using tank for a while but I'm more used to keel's movements (e.g. my rockets are crap vs tank because i have trouble predicting in what direction he leans 'same player lean values' = but maybe it is just a placebo)
I use the > < crosshair (i'm at work now, don't know what number it is), and it works pretty well for me.
I decreased the size a little bit, (i'll post the settings later) and looks ok for different distances, and you can follow the correct beam (truelightning)..I'm a shaft maniac, and i aim most by the curve of the beam + enemy movement / lean, and not by the actual crosshair. This crosshair helps me to fit the enemy and the hitcolor tells me if the lock is ok. Most times I aim at the feet or lower part of the torso (keel enemy model), but depends on the server lazyness :) (Romania servers vs Germany)
I hit 40+ shaft but is CA and doesn't matter :)), and 40% weap use for shaft.
ISCHJU I BEG YOU UPLOAD YOUR HUDZ NAAAOW! I tried searching through all your posts and your profile config but I cannot get hold of your HUD or the download links do not work anymore :'(
naw thats not what I mean. I want to have that effect all the time. Even in close range, but sometimes it fucks up your view when you are too close. I tried playing without it but it just feels weird when the impact suddenly is turned off in close-range. Totally confuses the shit out of me :D
I've never done any experimentation to speak of with different crosshairs, but I must say that I really don't see the point. The crosshair is just a tool to pinpoint the center of the screen, AKA where your weapons fire. It's an invaluable tool, but really it can be anything. I just use a dot for all weapons, and that's all I need.
Again, I haven't tried it, but I seriously doubt that switching xhairs will somehow improve my aim. Am I just being ignorant here?
i improve by changing crosshair, all tho, i wouldnt know the difference. i have made/edited maybe 20 different custom crosshairs and probably tried every crosshair in ql. when i first started playing i was around 22-27% lg, now im about 35-40% (40-50% against weaker dodgers).
now, im not gonna say i have improved by changing crosshair constantly. i've put in hard work in learning how to aim, crosshair changes was mostly done because i wanted something different, or that i thought my current crosshair was blocking my view of the enemy model or that the crosshair wasnt big enough, or that the crosshair was too transparent and i added black borders to have clear visibility of it.
probably would have improved by sticking with the same crosshair, but can you say i would have improved more/less? :D
agreed. since some weapons behave differently than others, your aim can increase when you adjust that to size and shape of the crosshair to a weapon's behaviour.
With mg you need a smaller crosshair than with rockets or shaft for instance. Imho an open crosshair for shaft isbetter than a closed one because it helps you to lock the target. and so on..
it is ugly but i converted also to it and have the feeling that i can way better track with it than with a +.
i guess it is because you don't pay that much attention where exactly to place the middlepoint on the model, just cover somehow the model and then work with hitsound/hitstyle to adjust.
I see your point about certain crosshairs being suited to certain weapons, and I can see how for some people this maybe works, but for me personally I just don't see it making a difference for hitscan weapons.
I'm using MG? Center the dot on the model and shoot.
I'm using LG? Center the dot on the model and shoot.
I'm using RG? Center the dot on the model and shoot.
As for projectile weapons, I don't see any sort of crosshair making any sort of difference for anyone. Just my opinion.
