You have been unbanned, we have had a few banned folks who were banned by id who were banned by the channel create alts and join so every once in a while a mistake may be made (not making any admissions here).
The pickup bot has alias detection, but apparently pthy and I are the only ones who know how to use it... Looks like everyone else is an admin for the purpose of banning people. Had I not been AFK at the time that this happened, I would have not banned you on so little evidence. But some of the paranoia is understandable, considering anti-social schizophrenics on parole (a.k.a xhilerate) frequently come by the channel with 10 different names, trying to cheat in pickup games
So going to QuakeCon to enjoy a little vacation, some gaming, and hanging out with people is a waste? You seem to be looking at it from all the wrong angles.
That or you're just being a douche about it, not that I want to outright call you that. I try to be nice. :(
But the channel is pretty lenient and also reasonable. Should pm an admin and discuss before making a post on esr, if people think they will pull noshows alias or whatever and just make posts on esr to avoid the rules-think again, esr is a good site and all but i don't give a fuck what esr thinks. use the chain of command before making esr posts.
The thing about Quakecon is that it isn't about Quake. The only reason to go there is really if you intend to play in the BYOC, and most people will be playing CS/SC2/DOTA/BF3/COD, or sharing files. The vendor booths make for a nice distraction, but not for more than 1 day. nVidia carried the event, and since they left, it's really gone downhill.
It's probably not worth attending unless you live a reasonable distance from the event, and only if you are looking to play things that aren't Quake. It is free to attend, which is a plus, but you're still going to have to pay for a room - the further from the con, the more reasonable the price. Don't even think about sleeping in your car, as Texas in August is unreasonably hot.
hello_world, why leave out all the good parts, like joining on 2 - 3 seperate names being extremely vague on who you were.." I'm a phantom" as a reply to who you are doesn't really boad confidence.
There's been issues of banned cheating players, like rapture_ making a new account and using a VOICE CHANGER on mumble and xhil making 3 - 4 accounts swearing up and down he's just a new player then proceeds to toggle away.
You also forgot to mention you did eventually play in a PUG and were treated absolutely fine.
If my 4 lines of text to you was "immature" I apologize but we're getting tired of people ban evading, toggling / wallhacking and intentionally ruining pickup games. If you'd say hey I'm hello_world, just trying to help a friend etc., there would of been no issue whatsoever. Your vagueness plus demeanor led not just myself to believe you were yet another xhil alt trying to ruin a PUG like an asshole.
Don't worry. My friend said he won't bother anymore with pickups because apparently everyone on the site is an asshole. He played a map he never played and I'm guessing you all were being the usual charlatans expected of the NA scene since he referred to the players as assholes and the experience as terrible. By the way, he joined as test when he first connected and had the very vague name of "qcon12," so I told him to make a new name that would be more identifiable. He made a new account with the name shifu and I then joined for him with that name to get him in a game. It's good when someone sees the truth about things and it's also good when I'm always right. You and fear are just lame fags and so is the majority of the leftover competitive scene in NA, which isn't competitive at all. Just whiny children that were too bad to play against real competition when it was available. Thanks for proving the points I've made for the longest time though.
Why are you so mad. I'm sorry but it is your fault to throw a newb into the pickups. Everyone who plays in the pickups are experienced players. So yeah, having a complete newb probably ruins the pickup. Go learn first somewhere else. It is your terrible advice that it is even an issue. You seem like a douche. Inc and Fear are not dicks just to be. When you are vague and alias all the time yes you deserve it.
You're funny because you have no idea what you're talking about. My friend is better than half of the players you call experienced judging by the names I saw on the site. Many of those "experienced" players you are so fond of probably alias. It's just a hilarious chain of events to me, and all the contradiction everyone in support of the failed project always has to spout. I don't care that you guys are dicks just to be. Quake has always been that way and...
The channel has been pretty friendly to new players, we pick good teams and I don't hear only a couple people beef at the noobs, but as a whole we are pretty lenient and good towards those who are new, I beg to differ about how the channel is for elites only even if there are elites who play. Often now, we have no-list pickups for the elites and often those who know they won't get picked use the list. In quake you can't ever get rid of the elitist attitude but this channel has been good and welcoming to new people.
Isn't pickups really a good place for new players to get introduced to the competitive scene rather than some bragging ground for some arrogant semi-amateurs with big internetcock?
Don't misunderstand me, there's a lot of pickups that revolve around high-tier players, (not talking QL-tier here) but you guys are not on that level so skip the elitistic bullshit and try to welcome some of the inexperienced guys instead of completely ruin the game.
Wow, try to be civil and that is how you reply, honestly man?
You and your "friend" were literally holding up a PUG from starting, as 4 - 5 other people (myself not included) were leery of joining due to the reasons in my previous post. I literally kindly asked and I quote ver batum " Could you please remove so others can play". Due to the fact a game would not be started with you in it, and you have the audacity to call me immature? For shame.
I've said my piece, and done feeding your trollish intentions behind this thread. Thank you for showing everyone your piss poor demeanor that we dealt with in IRC. Take care.
I'm sorry. I guess I just have a bad impression of you from when I used to play. You would try to pick your battles with newbs and since you avoided good players like me on public servers and absolutely refused to play pickups, I saw you as a coward. The same cowardice is what I saw when you refused to play someone new to pickups and organized games, and when you and fear both starting throwing about the wild accusations. "HE IS LEX OMG XHILERATEOMGOMG REMOVE YOU CAN'T PLAY HERE YOU AREN'T ALLOWED LET OTHERS WHO HAVE PLAYED THIS GAME FOR LONGER THAN FIVE YEARS PLAY GET OUT." Sorry, but people like you and fear, who is even worse than you, have forever instilled within me the idea that you are no more than petulant children. Take care.
Everyone he played with at least. He said they were riding his ass in mumble about him being lex. He doesn't have the lackluster Quake attitude that we've all developed over the years.
That is very interesting. I would look at all the stats of each player and record all the names for comparison, then spectate them for hours on end without playing to see which are aliasing and which are cheating. Unfortunately, I'm not bat shit crazy, like a certain someone.
Edit: So let's settle and call it the same 30 players.

for north america it has exceeded in participation and longevity for sure one of the most popular successful pickup channels after quake 4. Not going to make any comment on pickup channels before Quake 4 , of course #uscpmpickup is old legacy one.
most of the guys in these pickups cheat anyways. they also allow proven hackers like effortl3ss to continue playing in their pickup games, yet ban new players who are just trying to learn the ins and outs of the game
infact, these games are alot worse than playing in pub servers since theyre infested with a slum of suspicious players.
It's amazing that ray always turns up at any sign of incubus, albeit predictable. Insanity. Einstein said something appropriate to such a situation, I believe.
I was in the game last night with your friend. Me being completely new to the pickup channel (3weeks max) I had to go through the xhil accusations as well. The accusations are serious, for maybe the first 2 games, but at the same time people are very welcoming, my team teaching me positions and what not. Your friend was just being a baby, don't take the dead game that is quake so seriously and just have some fun.
yeah people have to be a bit less sensitive in quake for sure, heck people joke around by kicking and muting folks online-it's not too big a deal unless you try to make it one.
your friend should have no trouble finding t3 games(in any game mode he wants)...if he's new he probably shouldn't be playing pickups although i have no idea what the skill level of that community(qlpickup channel) is like now a days
if he sucks he shouldn't be playing pickups... and by sucks i mean he is a tier 3 level player...
I have no idea who you are, but you sound like an experienced player. Why throw your friend into a pickup with players infinitely better than he is? And if he can match up to them, then I don't honestly see how an issue could have happened regarding skill
@hello_world:
I have a friend that just got into quake, he is a total noob. Yet still, if I was responsible for introducing him to pickups, I'd go about it much differently. He is going to get his ass handed to him, be there 7 other noobs, or 7 other elitist competitive players. Meaning, as soon as you saw people you personally dislike join you should've removed, if you saw that they persisted and are ruining your friends chance to play, you should've warned him. Last but not least, you should've shown him on your own account how pickups go down.
@incubus
telling someone to remove just because you have a personal fear of something is a new noob ass move of the century. If you are playing pickup, you are dealing with an organized public game nothing else, same rules apply.
I really can't see how you can have any cheater problems in pikcups, i.e. if a cheater was to join, and anyone made him the server spawner can kick him and and you can restart the game. If you finish the game and then realize that you played with a cheater you can give demos to quakelive getting him banned, and actually ban him from the channel.
If you dislike a player that is a first time player in pickups he deserves about 5 games to made out or not.
All i saw in this post is people treating other people like shit 'cause their ego's can't handle anything in life.
While I played Q3A I was trying to get into ctf pickups. It was hard, I was called a noob, but I persisted and had fun learning, and getting my noob ass handed to me.
When I decided to get into tdmpickup on QL i was called a noob and got my ass handed to me, but still had fun learning and now I can say I even play good! That was the goal all along.
kind of an lol topic. hilarity from all sides really. perfectly captures both the total idiocy of a lot of the older ql players who seem to have way too much ego invested even on pickup games which should really just be about having fun, and the negativity of new players who expect to be treated with kid gloves on the internet.
having said that i have to admit the ql pickup scene is a little bit meh. elitism from truly good players is one thing, but seeing it from the pickup americans is something else. not to mention the general attitude. i recently started playing qw pickups and the contrast between the 2 scenes is just amazing. i think it just comes down to the fact that qw players actually want other people to try and learn and get into their game, while ql players are simply interested in winning any game they do get to play. o well.
also channel should just rename to #ctfpickupqloncp9.na considering how few other modes/maps actually get played much.
edit: i guess this might come across as being totally critical of everyone in the channel. just wanted to say that isnt what i intended. i think the effort from the creators and the admins has been good. im just loosing faith in the ql community in america overall. or i should say i have already lost faith in it.
But like you said the pickups should be about fun and that is how I approach it. I have played Quake long enough to not get bothered by trolls and the like.
i tend to get annoyed by trolls. and even more so by idiots. and i dont mean newbs. i tend to tolerate newbs and help them out if theyre actually polite. its the people who live to create drama that really bother me. i guess im also bothered by the fact that ql players are so close minded about trying new/different things out, whether its maps or modes or whatever (i mean u cant even really call playing tdm something new right?).
I have idled this channel for a long time, and I must say, kind of agreeing with raythenoob (as much as i hate to say it) that having certain people involved in your project is probably not in the best interest of everyone.
I regularly see people like incubus, gambit, sotrix and some others plainly refuse to play if they do not know the guy who is joining. From what I understand, none of those guys were perennial CTF all-stars in USA, even when actual good competition was available (2-3 years ago), so it is puzzling why they think that they are the supreme authority that gets to decide who plays & who doesn't.
tldr: US quake scene still suffers from ego, even from relative "unknown" players and EU ql scene gives more people the opportunity to play, in general
Would love to see examples of me turning people away who join a pug other than this ONE instance. Politely asking someone to remove because no one would join the game and no pug would be played, and I had a small window to get a game in. Hilarious how im taking the brunt of this when others were actually name calling, etc. Oh well, typical internet.
