Well, for blatant cheaters i think it doesnt worth it going through an extra round of registration every time they get banned...

Arranging matches are quite fast, pretty much you play in 3 minutes. The ladder is kinda like SC2's, a win worths much more than a loss (?), so its not that demoralizing for noobs. Obv. its not as revolutionary as they present it, but for a duel pickup its pretty decent.

It has a "skill" matcher. Though you need to play around 10 games first before it starts making matches between the "same skill". And obviously there need to be more than 6 players searching a game.

Wow, this Versus thing is amazing! I can now play BF3 and MW3 in semi-organized way - instead of playing it on pubs only. It's even supporting World of Tanks - although playing 1x1 Medium Tank tier 9 level is the most idiotic thing I ever heard.

As for QL - random games on pub servers are still more then enough for me. :)

And it won't replace qlranks in any possible way, it just complements it nicely.

So many motivated, competent people in this community. Unfortunately, ID's business model forces them to split up and hack around the main application.

Imagine people like LesTR offering patches for the existing QL app instead of writing their own software... where would QL be now?

But no, let's close things up a little, because it's a webapp with a 10 year old (already open source) game. Let's use two "programmers" in a closed model where a dev team should consist of about eight. Let's ignore the motivated community hackers, let's not even take them into our focus group, let's take some famous gamers instead.

Dear ID software: If letting the community in on this project would do you any harm, all these people would've been playing ioquake3 all along. It's your infrastructure and your user base that we pay for!

Until ID realizes that, we should encourage them by offering them our ideas and code. For example, what did you use for QLRank's backend, LesTR? And would you share it with ID or the community?

Please notice the difference between QLStats and QLRanks. Those are completely different stats pages.

QLStats then, in this case. Although I sure wouldn't mind if the author of QLRanks shares,too. :)

In our case I don't think it's a good idea to scatter the stats all around the Internet. If anyone wants their tournament added, they are free to ask us and we will for sure include it in QLStats. And if they want to implement some kind of table within their website, then for them we're currently developing widgets where they will be able to define what kind of data they want to see and then create custom styles for it, so it fits their website and then they can include it in their website. Also if somebody would like to have a new feature there, he can ask us as well.. we are open to suggestions. Sadly only very very few people proposed new features for QLStats.

What I'm saying in the end is that there are things which shouldn't be scattered all around the web in my opinion, beacause I think it would limit user experience.

Sorry, I don't see how sharing the code with the community (or ID) would have a negative effect on the user experience.

It rather sounds pretty much like the (bad) decision that ID made. In webapps, it's not important who can see the code. What matters is what server it runs on, who has the data and who has the user base.
In your case, you already have data of many games and tournaments, you rankings already scale. And you have the user base.

If people like your application and find it useful, they will not "steal" your code and run their own application or even try to earn money with that. Those people will instead give you better feedback and enable you to fix bugs or add new features in a much faster and more convenient way.

It's the same with ID software: If they released all the QL source code (including the web app), people would still pay for their server infrastructure and their user base. QL is the place to be these days, else we would still play (io)quake3. They could also use a license that permits others to use their code (commercially). You could do the same. The only thing that would change is that people who enjoy the application could give better feedback and actively help to improve those applications.

You're still the authors and the main developers and for that the community will always be thankful. You just maximize the resources to improve your application.

Of course I see your point and we understand the benefits of opensource, and later on maybe it will become open source. But currently it is tightly linked with our upcoming quake portal for czech community and it also uses some source codes which license does not allow us to make it opensource.. and without these parts, it just wouldn't work. Of course there is a possibility of rewriting that stuff, so it could be a standalone application, but considering the number of people who just for example suggested some new features, I don't think there is enough people who would be interested in looking into the source code so that it's worth our time to make it standalone (because that would really take a lot of time).
