Are there any more powerfull alternatives? I could buy it just to have stable fps in ql (640x480, picmip 5 everything low). My laptop doesn't cut it and I move way too often to buy a pc/another laptop.
I have a laptop/netbook/pen tablet and use it for taking notes. I'm not going to buy a new one as it's hard to find something without flaws (like glossy screen, bad quality, high power comsumption etc.) and these are pretty expensive - latest version of mine laptop with better graphics card costs ~2000$.
Indeed it runs quake 3 smoothly. Unfortunately we are in ql era so it averages 70 fps on toxicity and has drops on almost every map.
after reading that I went from "meh" to "sort of want it".
If it performs decent enough I'd want it like I did last year, which is I'd buy it if someone sells it at most 2 blocks from home, and if there's a youtube video of an absolutely impractical yet funny use then I'm sold.
I know it's not the same, but I simply love my htpc which is a Zotac mobo with a overclocked dualcore atom + ion.
It's a little silent box I built almost 3 years ago, and it still does everything like a normal computer (I use win7-32bit, and games like Q3,HL2,COD2 all run in HD just fine)
If I would be able to build a new htpc now, I would obviously go for a sandy bridge CPU and the stronger GPU, but would still go for low power and silent setup. This little config needs no more than 70-75W (with picoPSU+modem+router+monitor+speakers+everything included) and it's SILENT!.
Once you go 100% silent, there is no turning back:)
I have always considered building a htpc, but I guess I'm the PC desktop type of guy who tries to have only one other carryable device that does everything (mobile phone). A Raspberry Pi would be only a fun thing to play with and not a portable solution to anything.
On the other hand, I understand the appeal of htpcs and having multiple PCs and screens around the house for specific functions, such as a wall mounted kitchen computer, and I know how tiresome is trying to watch a movie on a lcd screen without a laptop or one of those. Following my "I don't believe in wireless technology and I don't care enough to configurate it" approach, everything here is connected through cables.
Actually this portability thing is becoming more or less of an (first world) issue lately. I don't even like laptops but those are (almost) a necessity nowadays, and it's ever expanding.
I never liked laptops and I don't have a mobile phone, I will only want one when they will be full featured PCs for a reasonable price.
I use my htpc most of the times tbh, one output is connected to a "local" monitor the other cable is going to the big TV, but the shitty atom (even if it's OC-ed to 2.2Ghz) can't run modern games or handle 3D rendering, so i need my gamer rig to do the heavy stuff:(. But I think my next build could be strong enough to do everything while keeping it silent, Ivy bridge is awesome and Kepler also looks really good power wise.
These Raspberry thingies are for building them into different devices in your house like security systems, TVs or into your car, or use them as routers and things like that, but we would need win8 and more ram to make them viable as a full time computers. They are just the first step. Win8 will run on ARM CPUs and ARM has a strong agreement with Nvidia as well. Intel and AMD are also trying to invade this segment of the market, so we gonna see a huge rise/jump on these low-power/mini PC field of the industry pretty soon.
just noticed it only has 256 ram. 512 would be much better, considering that non upgradable devices should aim not to be outdated in the next 2-3 years.
guess I'll wait for the $50 improved second version.
yeah personally I think I'm gonna order 5 of these, then when a new version comes out I'm gonna order 5 more, just to fuel my OCD and teach myself how to code better also want to make an arcade cab :p and a 2v2 qw lan setup :D
