So, I am still without a 120hz monitor since my Samsung 2233RZ died on me a while back now... I was going to re-buy it but seeing as I can't find anywhere that have it in stock for a decent price, I'm looking for a different monitor completely now!

I found the LG W2363D on Play.com and thought that was a cracking buy with it costing around Ł160 and having a few mates that have that monitor aswell, went to buy it and had an email today (this is since I tried to buy it on Thursday) saying that they don't have it in stock anymore even though I scanned the site for fucking hours trying to find out if it was in stock or not!!!!

So, I've finally come up with this monitor now (Viewsonic VX2268WM) and I've read around that you can't play on 120hz outside of its native resolution, could someone please confirm that I can or can not do this? I really am getting fed up with this old tatty 60hz heap of shit sitting on my desk in front of me right now and now that I finally have internet in my house again, I wouldn't mind playing Quake properly which I'm not going to even try doing with this monitor.

Also, I have an Nvidia graphics card not ATi which I've read may be the problem (for ATi card users at least) but as I said, I'm not sure :O(

with gpu scaling you should be able to play any resolution at 120hz

Sorry I'm a massive retard when it comes to computers and the like, is that just the scaling option I get with my nvidia drivers? Or another thing all together...? (I scaled my 2233RZ down to 800x600 and 640x480 through the options on my nvidia control panel but not with anything else)

GPU scaling with a Nvidia card is broken as fuck.

It will result in input lag as your mouse will feel really slow and delayed using GPU scaling to 4:3 resolutions.

Haven't tested out ATi cards, but I had to switch to 16:9 native to not have any noticable input lag, else it is unplayable.

I own that new Samsung S23A700D. But I doubt it would make a difference regarding what monitor you have. It is apparently a known Nvidia problem (forums is filled with it) since latest drivers starting in 2011.

But playing in native is actually much more comfortable imo. I also was a 4:3 junkie, but playing on 16:9 for a while with 120 hz, my eyes enjoy it more ;)

So if you are pretty sure that it wouldn't matter whatever the monitor, that means it should feel the same with my old monitor (I scaled this down to 800x600 too at 120hz and I haven't changed the drivers since)

Well I am not sure what you are used to. But if you use GPU scaling which happens via the Nvidia GFX card, you will experience mouse input lag compared to no GPU scaling.

From reading forums, people say that some monitors can scale to 4:3 by using the monitors own features, so not involving the GFX card. This seems to be a work around the mouse input lag, but the Samsung S23A700D does not have built in scaling.

Maybe some people who have the ViewSonic or other 120 hz monitors can suggest if those monitors have their own scaling. Or maybe if their ATi cards do GPU scaling correctly without input lag.

But as far as I experienced, nvidia GPU scaling to 4:3 is currently shit and adds a noticable amount of input lag that will have a negative effect on your play.

OK, well thanks a lot for the advice / help I'll bare this in mind! The end of the story is though, I will be able to scale the monitor down to 800x600 if I really wanted to (we think!) which I used to do before!

Unfortunately display built in scaling is likely to be laggy too. Monitors with a scaler often have input lag.

And yes you're right about nvidia's GPU scaling, but the problem doesn't happen with older drivers (260.xx for example) and I'm not sure it happens on XP either.

I tried installing an older driver, but somehow older drivers do not allow to be installed anymore. Says some kind of invalid driver for the video card and compatibility problem.

I tried several older drivers, but all give the same message. If I would know how to solve it, I would've suggested it, but apparently this is also a common problem :/

Btw I have a 9800 GTX, which is kinda old (like 5 years), and I was quite surprised it did not accept older drivers. But it might just be a combination of old driver, latest direct x and windows 7?

Going to try that when I get home. Windows 7 might decline an 'older' driver than already saved in the system. Will report back with results.

Yeah I can't install older drivers on Win 7 either. The bastard keeps reinstalling drivers from Windows update or something (I'm pretty sure it does it when my net is turned off too, so it must be in the Windows folder) and I just can't put old drivers on top of them.

On XP I had 0 problem downgrading and upgrading drivers as much as I wanted to (it's one of the things I miss from XP)

I have to admit that I haven't really looked into the problem though, as I absolutely need recent drivers for BF3.

Yeah that will be my main concern, that newer games require latest drivers, else you can't play them :D

But still worth to try to see if it works regarding GPU scaling and mouse input. Especially since a lot of people are flaming Nvidia about this problem and a lot of people keep defending Nvidia that it has nothing to do with the drivers and the mouse input lag is simply not there.

I never think to update my drivers unless I can't run something with them as they are so that might be why I didn't see this horrific input lag Blade was on about :o

I tested it and I can confirm that earlier drivers (I have 260.99 installed) will perform scaling to 4:3 correctly without any input lag. Later drivers however add mouse input lag and will fuck your game play up :) This is a Nvidia problem and not a monitor problem.

I you are using XP, I would even go a bit further back to 266.58, because I found it more stable with flash.

I know that they coded in something horrible into the driver after 266.58, because I had BSODs when playing youtube or other flash accelerated things.
Turning HW accel off in the flash control panel or using 266.58 (or earlier) was the only cure in XP to be safe on one of my systems.
It did not crap itself under win7 nor I had any trouble on my other machines, but I had a few occasions when only win7's truly awesome WDDM "saved" me with a "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" message.
Later they fixed the stability problem in newer versions of the drivers, but I'm not sure if they solved the problem or just found a quick workaround like how they rush-patched bugs so many times in the past.

Ive got the Viewsonic 2268wm, and it plays flawlessly in all resolution at 120hz, yes even with GPU scaling, and it does not add any lag for me (the 2268 has more input lag than the s23a700d), honestly though, id just get the 700d, its much newer, better contrast, better stand (wobbly as fuck on the 2268) and slightly higher resolution

Running 295.73 drivers on w7 x64
