Gah... don't be fooled by my ineptitude at choosing a decent image for this thread.

I'm not interested in Doom 3. It was a fun single player campaign though.

This thread was inspired by the interview of Higgs and DevestatioN.

1. Skulltag is "modern" with lots of new features like improved graphics, new weapons, new modes, etc... ZDaemon tries to keep as true to the original as possible. This is really preference, but I believe ZDaemon is more active.

2. You should buy the game either way, but if I remember, it's much harder finding the right version of the WAD for ZDaemon if you try to use an illegal version.

3. It's somewhat small, but unlike QW or such, most of the players are US/Canada (at least since the last time I played ZDaemon).

I got original wads from god knows when and they dont work on zdaemon either.

Skulltag is pretty active but I haven't played zdaemon before so I don't know the difference. But theres always several populated servers running at all times of the day.

Zdaemon is definitely active, there always seems to be a pub CTF going on in the US, for example. I would try both.

As Vedic said, it's more about preference. Both ports are relatively active, it's not hard to find a game any time of the day. Skulltag caters more to gimmicky mods like Ghouls vs Humans, AOW2, ZH and stuff like that while Zdaemon has more vanilla-esque orientation. Both are tons of fun, no reason not to play them at the same time, tbh.

I'd recommend buying the game for the WAD (i mean, come on...) but it's not that hard to find it on torrents and such.

Word of warning, might want to spend some time getting used to the netcode, it's kind of wonky and may seem "off" for someone with a Quake background.

Eh, it's a little hard to explain really, i don't know how to put it into technical terms, it just feels a bit awkward. Don't mean to say "bad" either, just different.
