to be honest in reality i probably won't play all of them but i just want to get the computer that could play all of them in case i change my mind (pretty certain i won't be playing gw2 but i might buy it as a one off just to try it)
Graphics Card: 1.25GB Nvidia Geforce GTX560 Ti 448 Core
Case: Anything you like under ~£95 by Cooler Master, ThermaleTake, Fractal Design, Antec, Sharkoon, Bitfenix or Lian-Li/LanCool. (Make sure the graphics card will fit in the case)
Power Supply: Antec High Current Gamer 520W
DVD Drive: Anything from LiteOn, Sony or Pioneer
Peripherals: Mouse, Keyboard, Speakers, Monitor etc. (if you need this, otherwise disregard).

This is just a rough guideline, and represents value for money. Not sure how much it all adds up to in terms of £, but it shouldn't be too far off your initial budget of £600.
Things you shouldn't change should be the CPU, RAM, Graphics Card and Motherboard.
Extra parts like a sound card is up to you, but make sure the motherboard has enough slots for it.
For sound card, I recommend the ASUS Xonar (the DG and DX are excellent value for money) range.
This is the rig that I just built. I put in your currency too. It's close to your price range so you can tweak it a bit. I'm also overclocked to 4.4GHz at 41C idle.
I didn't get the monitor, but thats one of the best 120hz lcds. Don't know if you're looking to get one down the line or not. I also didn't need the DVD drive since I made a bootable Windows 7 USB install. It took 8 minutes to install to the SSD haha.
Nice suggestions. I'd have chosen different things though.
The SSD: 64GB SSD is hardly enough for your system and games imo, win7 is close to 20GB alone and it's not uncommon for today's games to be 10GB and more.
The graphic card: Aren't Nvidia cards better for OpenGL games generally speaking? I've seen how smoother it was at DH on the PCs that had the nvidia cards in comparison to the ones that had the ATI cards. If he wants to play mostly Quake then I think a Nvidia card would be a better choice eventhough it's a bit more expansive.
The power supply: I don't think as much as 700W is required for that build (need someone to confirm!) and you could have got a 550W for half the price. :X
You're right about not requiring 700W to power that. 550W will be able to run the whole thing fine, as long as the power supply is a proper brand like Corsair, Seasonic and Antec etc. (Since they're all mainly Seasonics in the first place, just rebranded) :)
I have two other larger regular drives for files, hence why I went that route.
Yes, I think the Nvidia card would be better for OpenGL stuff. I've yet to look for a fix, but I get a lot of tearing in CPMA for some reason. doesn't matter what .exe I use either. Is there a fix for that? Also, if he's not focused on Quake, the ATI card will be better. It performs better in real world gaming than the Nvidia cards, but the Nvidia cards come up higher in benchmarks like 3DMark.
The PS might be higher, but I think it's a reasonable price, and it allows him to go SLI if he wants in the future.
I don't know if there is a fix for that, never heard of one so far. But yep, I have an ATI card for years and that 'tearing' is really annoying. :|
That's why I suggested a nvidia card if Quake is his main game. :)
Surely ANY modern decent graphics card will run quake at 120fps+
I had a 4870 and it even ran rage (latest id tech) over 60fps. Who cares if one runs faster than the other in quake when the difference is 500 fps to 550 fps.
Yes I agree but FPS isn't the point, Nvidia cards handle OpenGL games better and make it way smoother than with an ATI card. I wasn't suggesting to get a 500€ Nvidia card, just one within the same price range as that ATI card Gillz suggested.
And yes you can run most games in high quality with the 4870, that is what I currently have.
This is what I bought last month or so, mind it I did not really go for anything cheap. Just had two objectives that I wanted done.
Needed to be silent while being a decent gamer machine for the next 3-4 years.
Tower: Antec Sonata SOLO II
PSU: Corsair Gold AX850
Motherboard: Socket 1155 ASUS Sabertooth P67 B3
CPU: Socket 1155 Core i7 I7-2600K 3.4 GHz
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 4 x 4 GB (16 GB) 1600 Mhz
HD: 180 GB Corsair Force Series 3 SSD
GFX: ZOTAC GeForce GTX 580 (1.5 GB)
around 1500-1600£
I made one mistake, going with the inbox cpu cooler. it makes trice as much noise as the rest^^
But I will order a silent cooler in the next few days and replace it.
Then it will be hard to tell that the computer is on.
I was never good with calcing how big the PSU needs to be, but I had the choice between 650 and 850 silent PSU's. Got 5 HD's in all and might go SLI one day when the GTX580 is cheaper. So went with the biggie.
I'm building a new rig atm aswell and I wouldn't mind having advices on what to pick really so I get a good quality/bucks ratio. Basically I want my rig to last years (4/5) and run most games coming in those years just fine before I have to update it again.
Anyways there is what I've chosen so far : http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/790941newrig.jpg (french, sorry for that but I figured it was easy to get what's what with the specs)
Would it be worth to add an extra 100€ for the i7 2700k considering I want this to last years?
I see you have a Green drive. I highly recommend to sacrifice the 1TB and grab a normal SeaGate Barracuda (ST2000DM001) as green drives are hardly reliable.
As for the whole build itself, it looks pretty good.
I would say unless you'll be doing more hardware intensive work like photo/video editing, music production often etc., there's no need to grab an i7 since there will be no real/significant benefit for gaming (compared to the i5 2500K you picked).
Other than that, I would say it's safe to order that build if you want :)
What's wrong with the green drives? Do they tend to not work after a while because of a bad build quality or..? If that's the case, 1To might be a little short as I like to keep my movies/shows in case I want to watch them again. :)
What about this one : Hard drive Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001, 3 To ?
Can't find a non green 2To drive from seagate on the website I was looking.
Green drives aren't really 7200RPM at all, and their reliability hasn't been their strongest point. No point having a hard drive that can store lots of information but will just die on you soon.
If you want 2TB, then I would suggest looking at the Seagate Barracuda 2TB (ST2000DM001) instead. I'm not sure how the 3TBs perform, so I would personally stay away and grab another Seagate Barracuda 2TB (ST2000DM001) if you ever need that extra space in the future.
Very true so I guess I'll stay away from their green drives then. Is the same can be said for the Western Digital green drives?
I don't 'absolutely want' 2TB but that would be the minimum I'd like to have, I'll be fine with 3TB aswell. Wouldn't it be fair to assume the 3TB drives from Seagate are as reliable as the 2TB ones since they aren't green either? I can't imagine them having different specs but just bigger space to be honest.
About two years ago when I needed a new HD, I looked into these "green" drives to see what they were like. A lot of people complained about them since it would do everything it can to run at minimal power. That means if you were watching a movie, and your OS loaded up a part of it, when you got to a part in the video where it needed to load more, the drive would spin up, you'd have to wait, then it would load the rest of your movie. If it doesn't detect any activity, it does something where it locks its self and needs a second or two to start back up again. Basically, you'd open a program on your desktop and you'd need to wait two seconds for the drive to kick back on.
I know that might be a rough explanation, but I couldn't find anyone talking good things about those drives. Honestly, it's five fucking watts, why do we need to conserve that energy. It's ridiculous, get a normal drive :D
I just bought pc, quite close to what you want to buy (same processor and gfx), everything works like a charm, bf3 on ultra, same with sc2, cod, gta4 etc.
you have billions of nicknames to chose and you call yourself kkk, you flaming and cursing nonstop here, plus your on probation (i dont know your history), and now you go offensive on admins. what do you think will happen?
1. I dont have 'billions' of nicks, I have 1 nick at a time, since I get banned relentlessly on the count of prejudice against me and morons sending demos that prove absolutely nothing, except skill.
2. KKK - sup with my nick? Not my fault if u or any other idiot sees historical or any other type of reference in my nick (or in any other random word or acronym).
3. I'm not flaming 'non-stop'. Or cursing 'all the time'. The fact that most of my posts contain insults to other users is simply an indicator that this site is full of idiots/scumbags/jealous n00bs/pathetic rats. I'm actually a very nice guy, but this is a troll site, hence a smart guy shouldnt be surprised if that side of me is quasi-invisible here.
4. I think I'm on probation for some random racist remark, even tho racist shittalk is anything but shunned or penalized with consistency (if at all) on this site.
5. I'm not offensive towards admins. I was merely stating a fact: since my probation, several of my posts haven't been approved. And it's not like they were posts containing terrible nazi-racist-disgusting-orwhatnot shit. That's censorship. And for that i called the admin a cunt in my previous post (was meant only for him, didnt think he'll publish it, w/e). Since I dunno if this will be approved and since I can at least be confident that at least 1 person will read this, I say again: fuck your censorship.
6. I dont expect anything to happen :| *lone wolf howl* ...?...?...?
I believe this will perform better than both the 6870 and the 560 ti suggestions. However it depends on the pricing etc. You can probably get the 6870 for cheap now.
