Hey guys,

I'm gonna start really simple here, so everyone on esr will probably be bored if you tune in, the idea is we have a huge vod section, where new players can learn from basics upwards.

the first show will be covering the basics of quake, game mods, wep damage and more, the first show is more... learn to watch quake. then later were go into more details.

and because were starting so simple, if you tune in and your good at quake, there wont be anything for you, but you can to show your support by watching and give feedback, but hopefully I will link the vod to other communities to help them get more interested in quake.

also since its a simple start, we wont have fazz yet. so just me talking shit tomorrow :)

Will you take guests over skype for the future learning shows? It could be a nice way to spice the flow of the exposition, and get some experienced players talk briefly about one aspect.

Thought I should mention you said the shotgun did 110 damage last show when it does 100 damage if all pellets hit. Plus the spread isn't random anymore.

Perhaps you could also take in questions from new players over the stream and reply in the form of brief gameplay. A small strafe run for example.

Why didnt they choose a Defrag player to explain the movement?
I mean there are alot of Defraggers out there willing to help for free
Plus, Defrag would get promoted aswell that way.

Because there isn't much to explain about strafejumping and they're promoting quakelive, which hasn't got defrag.

Right yeah there isnt much to explain, maybe that's why allmost every tutorial about the quakemovement is only explaining half of it's content.

What I am saying is - defrag players know a lot more about the movement because that is all defrag is. While a lot of the aspects from defrag might exist in ql they're are irrelevant because movement is just a part of what quake is.

Well what is it then that you think fazz and 2gd wont be able to explain? I know madix have played alot of defrag, havent seen anything about his movement that stand out from the other top players movement. I am genuinly curious, i have never played defrag.

What i was asking for is, to maybe extend this Quake Tutorial more about movement. Because i think there are some things that havent been covered yet. For example the Theory of strafejump or circle jump.
Which i have to admit, might be hard for ppl to understand. Truth to the fact it is part of the quake engine, therefor it deserves to be told.
And i doubt that 2GD and Fazz can explain those certain things, even tho i got great respect!

This is exactly why you need ql players to explain the movement. In defrag the movement is everything. Players do everything to get .008 of a second faster from A to B. That is the end goal. In quakelive however the movement is your means to kill your opponent or to get an armor(which in itself is just another mean to kill your opponent). You don't need to know why holding jump doesn't let you accelerate. Overcomplicating the movement might just be a turnoff for some of the players at which this segment is aimed at. What needs to be explained and 2gd and fazz are more than qualified to do so is - strafejumping, rocketjumping and plasmaclimbing.

Holding jump strafejumps dont affect your acceleration in air, becausse there is no air friction, expect for the flight powerup!
Not holding jump while strafing, but instead timing the exact landing time and jump time, is because to reduce ground friction, which decelerates your movement.

This is in fact WRONG.

Flight PU has no friction, it's just adding to vertical velocity when you use it.

To get close to 0 ground time (and thus eliminate ground friction), all you need to do is release jump and re-press at _any_time_ in the air. All that matters is that it was pressed _before_ landing, nothing else matters. This is not CS where you needed to press jump _after_ landing, where timing mattered (to eliminate ground friction; CS works as you say).

Meanwhile using jump or crouch mid-air DOES limit your air acceleration to some ridiculous numbers (I think it's possible to air-strafe up to 400-something ups and no more, maybe even lower). And THIS is why you need to release jump for as long as possible. (unlike CS or QW among others)

calm down guys u lost focus . the show is about explaining the basics of quake to beginners! especially the movement is one of the most important factors of quake (live) and the main reason why quake is what it is : the fastest fps in the world.
you dont need a defrag god to cast the show since defrag is mostly played in promode. those guys have a major expertise in quake movement no doubt! but the show is about gettin people closer to quake and about helping noobs to get into the game therefor u need someone who has decent knowledge about the topic (in theory and in actual use) AND who is able to teach such a tricky thing like strafe jumping properly to absolute beginners. I would say the quality of the lessons is more important than how much the teacher knows about it. keep it simple stay classy :)

Tricks specific to defrag are not required, not used and not important for gameplay in QL's offered modes. If you are defrag player, the extensive movement knowledge you have won't give you any advantage over just normal ql player who knows just plain strafe/circle jumping.
Besides, this is supposed to be a lesson for beginners, so those advanced movement techniques that defrag players posess over normal ql pro players, aren't even a topic for the lesson, so defragger would be simply useless here.

Nice, now can my girl friend which is new to ql follow this and enjoy 2gs show! She started with QL yesterday and she likes it a lot! At the moment she is at controls (need to get use to it) and basic usage with weapons!

They should get purri to the studio if possible. Remember him commentating one of the early zotacs or gdata. He have a very fluent english and was easy to listen to. He got tons of experience in duel aswell, mainly q2 and q4 though i guess, but should have some insight in ql 1v1 aswell. And he would be very good if they cover some tdm in the learn to play series.

I enjoyed fazz aswell but i guess he wont be around everytime.

make sure to mention that people who are trying to get into ql should under all circumstances download qlprism at www.qlprism.us so they get an accurate measurement of their own and other's skill level. also say it may be a good idea to start together with a friend etc - basically let them know it's normal to get raped badly if you connect to a random server, that id's own skillmatching isn't very accurate and how to overcome that problem.

Also one advice on strafe jumping. I ran into a comment somewhere (ql forums I guess) by a new player that all the tutorials couldn't teach him strafe jumping because they didn't emphasise the fact that at low speeds you need to adjust the angle quite a lot and not just switch between two fixed angles.
I must agree that most of the basic tutorials sound like this + circle jump is all you have to do.

The last show was nice, James was awesome and entertaining as always.
I like Fazz but he has tendency to interrupt or/and simple talk loader and louder until James get forced to stop talking.
I know Fazz is new to this whole commentary thing but i think he should work on this for future shows.

2gd knows though... he's just out of shape so he doesn't notice it all atm.

What I seriously hope is that they don't make it all about duels, because duels are one of the most annoying gametype to start with in QL. Many top players started dueling in very different environment, and so they don't fully realize what it takes to start dueling now, completely from scratch. I think I won my first duel game after about 100-150 or so losses in a row, and you imagine that it takes a lot of patience to keep playing in this situation.
The simplest mode for beginners is clan arena, so I hope that they will show the basics of movement, aim, strafing, etc, based on examples in clan arena, before moving on to duel stuff.

That is actually done by the QLRanks.com Display userscript, which is bundled with QLPrism.

Steve_jobs has a good point. Imo they should talk and explain duel extensively just to show where u want to be. But they should explain that the trip to that target has to pass from other modes, like ffa and ca. Of course, new players can duel from time to time to check their progress, or to duel frequently with friends. Duelling with randoms though is not recommended.

2gd an advice for you. Start with basics, start with controls. Some ppl will start with scrolling to switch a weapon. Make sure they bind them etc. I saw by my girl friend which is new and she never played an fps before. She is totally lost. She barely aim anything and she is trying to use to the controls. She is still using scroll on mouse to switch weapons though. Controls and setup quake should be very 1st step. After this normal jumps after jumps go on strafe and rocket jumps etc. Start from the very beginning and try to give them tips at controls. There might be some people who never played an fps before, remember that!

People could become proficient at any kinds of weird stuff, but it should never be a recommendation for new players to start with strange settings and then try to get used to them, instead of using optimal config right from the beginning.

You can focus more easily on your movement if you don't have to worry about 9+ other binds on your keyboard. How you can properly move/dodge on the keyboard + worrying about switching to 9 possible weapons is beyond me. I know for a fact some players tend to be more comfortable dodging on either left/right depending on their weapon keys.

Scroll wheel is not the optimal way. Switching weapons on scroll wheel is like playing QL on gamepad - you can do it, you can even probably master it and reach top level, but it is just so much easier in the long run to start with mouse.

How you can properly move/dodge on the keyboard + worrying about switching to 9 possible weapons is beyond me.

Believe me, if someone has never seen a mouse, and learned to play QL on gamepad, then at the beginning mouse will be "beyond him" too. People just so easily forget, how "beyond them" EVERYTHING was when they start to play game like QL first time. When I was a kid, I learned to play all shooters on keyboard only, and then relearning to aim with mouse took an enormous effort, it wasn't easy or intuitive at all, and definitely it felt like "how the hell you all do that, it's totally impossible ffs!!!!..."
For a new player, learning to switch to any weapon instantly with scroll wheel is the same impossible thing as for you switching by 9+ binds on keyboards, because you've just never learned it. But it takes same effort to learn to do either thing and keyboard provides more straightforward and deterministic way of switching, so it's that way that should be recommended to new players, for whom it makes no difference what of two absolutely impossible things to become skillful at.

I also started playing on keyboard-only FPS but I haven't been really that much confused when I had to use a mouse instead. Was long ago though....

I really can't tell if what you say is true or not. Most of my friends beeing fps noobs use the wheel and if I told them that a lot of people use binds for their weapons they'd go like wtf ?!

I agree with u and I wish I could save some keyboard binds like u, using the scrollwheel. It doesn't seem like a good idea though. It must take some time to switch to a weapon, instead of being instant. That is why u have gaunlet on keyboard, probably the weapon that requires the faster switch for not being completely uselles.

I have been confronted with this argument many times in the past and I wish
someone would bring me a proof for this assertion. I believe I can switch to any
weapon as fast as anyone else using scroll. I instinctively know how my
finger needs to roll on the wheelmouse to the exact position to get my desired weapon,
taking into account what weapons I have and/or what weapons are available on the map.

Moving some of your keyboard fingers from say key Z to key F surely doesn't take
much less time than a simple sweep of my finger on the wheel...

i saw a video from ugc where u used drawgun 1. is this a result of using mwheel to change weapon or do u actually like it?

I always used drawgun on q3 (used drawgun 0 on q4) for no real reason apart taste

well the thing is that 'sweeps' on the mousewheel are often unreliable.
This leads to people 'unconciously counting the clicks' -> takes time.
And in general it takes more time to do that (aka to secure that you never fail a weapon switch) than it does to press 1 button.

If you always sweep it without counting the clicks chances are when your mouse breaks you'll be screwed for quite a while ;)

I just need a new wmo then. I am on my 3rd or 4th right now since
the wheel is the first thing to break in wmo's apparently..

I use different fingers to press my binds depending on the situations I am in. I can't imagine a situation where I have to suffer my choice of movement because I need to switch to a certain weapon.

I can't imagine how scrolling on the well can ever be as fast and/or precise as pressing a single button.

And regarding default: every weapon is bound to the keyboard in Quake Lives default controls (unlike Q3).

I have wmo too and its mwheel is totally random so I can't use it for anything important. I tried to use mwheelup for dropping weapons but I just ended up dropping them at the wrong time. It's just too loose.

he uses wmo with 125hz lol

edit: Mine wmo's wheel isn't loose at all. Maybe you should check a new one?

depends what mouse u use tbh, the deathadder has a decent scroller for controlled ammount of scrolls, but id rkn if u were on like wmo or intelli 3.0 then the scroller is fucked for such things. i use scroll up for rl and down for lg FTW ;D

make sure to put lots of time and thought when doing the SC2 tutorial. That alone could get you 100,000 total views (not live viewers) or more.

It'd be boring seeing him getting stomped by fazz though. He's better matched against former high/top players that stopped playing completely just like him.
Also 2gd is probably a "bad winner", which is quite fun to see on stream or live.

If you could summarize quake dueling in a minute that can be shown on the stream intermittently and on the homepage it would probably have more impact (and point to the entire vid).

The video is good but needs to be cut up to parts so that new players can view the part they are unclear about more in detail.

might be a good idea to get mccormic or someone to do a real quick nicely edited video with you covering the very basics of spectating and saying what's awesome about quake.. I think they did something similiar for q4 back in wsvg days or smth?

might even take this approach a little further and have a short video for every major aspect that is to be covered - for instance when talking about movement start off with a clip of somebody strafe- and rocketjumping through the map in order to be able to get a shot he otherwise wouldn't have been able to land or to grab all items on the map. if you edit this in a cool way it'll instantly get people interested in what you're going to have to say about it afterwards and you can then go into all the detail you want live.

next show for quake, were follow quite a strict show plan, so it will move faster and the info will flow easier

Like here is 10 secs of rocket play the way it's meant... (where you just cut smth from a demo)
and then run it in slowmotion afterwards detailing why it was a good choice / how his dodging went etc.

I will allow myself to some criticism here and I hope it will be heard peacefully because I really respect what you're doing with GD and more precisely with this "learn to play" show.

What I was worried about before the show is exactly what happened and why I stopped to watch after 30 minutes : You didn't prepare anything and just hoped in a game, assuming that you knew so much about quake that you could easily transmit this basic knowledge.

Unfortunately, one does not becomes a good teacher just because he knows something well enough. What were you trying to teach here ? quake basics or quake duel basics ? This is two very different things and you will only confuse the public if you give some information about the HUD and 2 minutes later, some information about playing the respawn system logic. This feels very random and therefore hard to follow. You have to decide what you want to transmit exactly and build a line for the show. I also agree on the fact that 2 hours is way to long for this.

Since it's easy to give criticism but hard to produce something, here is just my 2 cents about what I would do if I was there in Sweden :

First ,the core, I would max the length of the show to 1 hour. Then I would built it around two main axis : technical/serious knowledge and funny presentation. I would off course build the second axis around you since you don't take yourself to seriously, are funny and can bring the light atmosphere that actually keep people on the show and make them want to come back. I would prefer the serious part to be carried by someone else. You two would play together and pov could switch from one another.

Second, I would start with the real basics of quake, what concerns everyone, and I would make a show on each one of them :
- Weapons : present each one of them, the dmg, the range, how they could be used, how they relate with each other.
- Movements : strafe, rj, pj, and dodging.
- Games mode
and then I would start with duel. The first show would be about timing. the second about passive/aggressive/postion/respawn play. Then you can present maps. One for each show where you will precise on each map the specifics aspect studied before.

Anyway, I've been already to long but it's maybe because I feel you have gold in your hands, and I don't want you to throw it away on lazyness.

I think it'd be cool if the L2P series was a short series focussing on one aspect of the game each show. Like 15 min max.\ depending on what you're demonstrating.

Isnt quake ridiculously overdesigned in the health /armour pickup department?

why is green/blue/red armours plus shards needed ?

Why is there four health pickups in another overlapping colorset ?

Why are they colored at all , when size/amount/number would be much easier to understand for the new player?

how is the new player able to work out the health limitations on some of the health pickups?


Why is color significant at all when it doesnt show on the player that they have picked up armor?

It wasn't really "designed" a lot, id software just did some stuff, and after some community modifications, it turned out to be very interesting and complex multiplayer game.

So that different map areas can have variability in their importance.

And this variability provides for complexity in "metagame", when you not just go somewhere and shoot, but also think ahead what you and your opponent are going to do in next seconds/minutes. I.e. simplest example is that if you damage your opponent heavily, you expect that he'd want to get 50 hp bubble, not 25 hp, so you can plan your response accordingly. Or, for a more complex example, player X in control might understand that his opponent Y is out of control and would not want to fight for "big" items like MH and RA, so X might think "hey, he won't go for my MH anyway, so why don't I just leave it and instead trap him and his yellow armor which he things is safe to get", and Y might predict that X could play a trick like that, and instead of going to yellow armor and into a trap, wait at some place to hear where X is going and when he knows that X is going to trap him, he instead takes MH which X left there thinking that it would be not contended, thus tricking X.

Because people played 13 years in that way and didn't find that as a problem at all.

Different armors/health have to look different somehow, id software chose to make them different color, that's all.

Of course it would suffice. Actually, even simpler system without any items on the map at all, and just players starting with equal amount of total health and equal weaponry, is sufficient for most players, it's called "clan arena" and is probably most popular mode in QL. But at some point it simply becomes a question of who hits better lg, and as competitive mode it loses all complexity and interest.
