The crosshair appears washed out with crosshairbrightness 0. I don't think this is what is used.

It is. Your cfg is causing the difference. It's pitch black here with that setting.

Isn't there a command that sets crosshair opacity? maybe it has something to do with that

I think crosshairbrightness replaced crosshairalpha. Atleast in my cfg alpha doesn't show.

make the gamma higher and lower contrast to 0.9-0.8

It's actually Cooller's config that traditionally uses a black crosshair among others.

Probably be enough to look through his DHW2011 cfg.

I think Cypher just used black for this particular event and his config wasn't posted for it.

You could be right, so I looked through his (cooller's) config to explain the video of him playing often showing a black crosshair.

While he does have cg_crosshaircolor 5 (yellow), and no specification for the weapons, he does have this entry:

bind KP_INS "cg_crosshairbrightness 0;r_gamma 0.8"
bind KP_DEL "cg_crosshairbrightness 1;r_gamma 1.1"

Which leads me to believe that he switches to black on some maps.
