It's not bad, but it is boring. By the way, "defensive" is a very broad term. It can imply everything from counter-attacking style to Greece circa '04. But you know what, i can excuse weak teams for preferring that style, because opening up often is a death sentence for them against stronger opponents. Chelsea is not a fucking weak team, they are strong contenders in every league/cup/tournament they participate in. They're filled to the brim with extremely well compensated stars. I bloodly well expect better than this from a team of such stature.

the only realistic response to barcas football for nearly every team is to play defensive and counter fast. try play them at their own game and they will destroy you. chelsea won the only way they could, by playing percentage football and getting lucky. people moan about it but barca do this to every team they come up against, it doesn't matter how good they are. go direct against them and they will cut through you. park the bus and it's a matter of time before you concede. their players coupled with this style of aggressive ball retention and their extremely paitent probing in the final 3rd is a real problem for any club looking to win honours.

they can be beaten when they have to come forward and make something happen, when they don't have the luxury of time anymore. chelsea have to survive the first 60-70 minutes at the nou camp, make barca desperate and then put their fast attackers and wingers to use when barca are over-extended. they can do it as they have a good defensive unit. but that pitch is just soooo damn big...

Real, Valencia, Bilbao, hell, even Arsenal showed you can succeed against Barcelona without "parking the bus" for 90 minutes. It's exhausting. It's difficult. But it is possible. Stats were very even, if i remember correctly it was 55 to 45 possession for Barca and Real had more shots at goal. Final score 2-2, and to be honest, overall Real looked the better team throughout. With the right players it can be done.
