Quake seems to be slightly on the rise to me, thanks to The GD Studio and the new gametypes and "samplers."

I've certainly seen a lot more people playing lately. Time will tell if it will continue to rise or if it's just a phase.

I expect even more new players when exam season is over.

Yeah, hopefully the numbers will continue to rise.

I know I'll be playing *WAY* more once my exams have ended.

Dunno, actually numbers of players decreasing in summer and increasing when it's cold outside (in Europe). Just mine observations.
