If QL goes down, do you think id will make all of the stuff that was put into QL open source, so some passionate Quake players that are more tech savvy than most can put together a 100% free Quake game built by the players for the players - what QL "could have been" so to speak?
Even if that happened somebody would have to be the new arqon and I doubt all you lazy retards would actually pick up programming to make your own version of that new ql instead of playing his.
I'm not kidding. People hate him for having made "his" game and not caring about the earth shattering whine/unrelated demands.
Nobody would get anything done if they're not able to tell the community to fuck off.
Check, check and check! Congratulations, you're hired. Here is your complimentary umbrella (for the shit that will be flying your way) and a gun with one bullet (for when you've had enough and just want to end it). The pay is one insult per hour, the perks include this top of the line Arrogance Booster V2.0, The Dickhead Machine (insert normal sentence, receive barely coherent and vulgar ramblings) and losing all your friends forever.
As for arqon being cocky and rude on the interwebz, I'm pretty sure it was just part of the arqon, evil coder of cpma *persona* he had to put up to deal with stuck up retards who would have been better coding their own mod for vq3 once osp went poof.
edit: can't fucking type anything without forgetting words.
It is official; Netcraft now confirms: Quake is dying
One more crippling bombshell hit the already beleaguered Quake community when IDC confirmed that Quake market share has dropped yet again, now down to less than a fraction of 1 percent of all servers. Coming close on the heels of a recent Netcraft survey which plainly states that Quake has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Quake is collapsing in complete disarray, as fittingly exemplified by failing dead last in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive networking test.
You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict Quake's future. The hand writing is on the wall: Quake faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for Quake because Quake is dying. Things are looking very bad for Quake. As many of us are already aware, Quake continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood.
Quake Live is the most endangered of them all, having lost 93% of its core developers. The sudden and unpleasant departures of long time Quake Live developers Jordan Hubbard and Mike Smith only serve to underscore the point more clearly. There can no longer be any doubt: Quake Live is dying.
q3/q4 is dead, qw/q2 are on heaven now, ql is dieing.. It is looks like the end of the quake era.. Omg, i'm crying!
But, there are good free projects in the world like Warsow and Xonotic, they need some love and attention!) if ID doesn't care about the players, the players should care about themselves.
Warsow is awesome! But surely it's no less 'dead' than Quake. Not that either of them are actually dead. People just say that out of bitterness, or because they have ridiculous standards for what counts as a 'living' game.
Not being hugely popular nor having big prize-pool tournaments != dead.
Quake IS dead depending on what the game is to you and where you live. To me Quake in its purest form is deathmatch, team deathmatch to be more particular. I love playing with my mates and the sense of teamwork it brings, and I love challenging other teams to organized games of TDM the way it was meant to be played. I can no longer do this as the amount of active tdm players in the NA scene has dropped to below 8 (yes, eight).
Europe has around 30 teams spread over two skill divs and multiple leagues / events to play in for a guy like myself. If I lived over there I would be playing quake daily and me and my mates would still have pro subs and I'd be right there with everyone else laughing at people saying that Quake is dead. Instead of I'm stuck in NA where its only publics and duels and there are zero teams zero leagues and zero activity. I haven't played a game of quakelive in almost a year now, and it wasn't really by choice :(
It all depends on where you live and what Quake means to you. As an Aussie Dueler I'm glad you can still say "Quake is alive" because for some of us its not the case.
"Dead" is generally meant to mean very low activity, and no growth. Unless the remaining players stick with the game, the game will have no players left.
Quake got stale and I've little hope that id is able to change that. Look at RAGE, it's difficult to find an AAA title with less innovation. And the community: most quake lovers grew old, got a job, family, studies etc. GL with finding the "new arqon" who can create something big.
As a major esport title quake has faded quite a while a ago. That to say I don't think that quake will ever die - as long as there are people who enjoy it there will be games being played. Play the game if it gives you fun, threads like this are pointless.
You can have thrilling fun games without being able to strafe jump, as long as your opponents are on the same skill level. But yea, the average quake player is born as a pro and games like SC2 or LoL don't take skill at all :)
stick to poland, you aint got the computers to hit r_skipspecular and r_skipdynamicshadows, and have better performance with online dedicated action and so on, even then specular lighting doesnt really affect FPS
word, all recoded with cleaner snapshots being sent, specific server and client side code throughout whole dll saves bytes added,. adds better performance, the server doesnt bother with alot of playerstates etc, or update huds
drop the console and do com_showstats or whatever and few network traffics, q43a usually will use less then q4mp, and lucky to reach more then 2400bytes/s in a normal duel, unless you spam with plasma, as all projectiles are 100% serverside and all physics synced out to clients, they have no prediction to go through walls etc, all projectile class is 99% new
on big open maps like dm8 and ctf5 its just your card and polys per second that kills FPS, but that can be stopped by not having a skybox, and just a box with stars
Oh, I got your point and I don't think you belong in the same group as dutra, quite the opposite. But any discussion about this subject looks like beating of a dead horse.
Not really, I think people are jaded about the future of quake ( as in quake-ish mp fps ) because they are quake players, not because the genre is dead. Though they'd need to drop their bs/ego/skillzorapist mentality which is not gonna happen overnight.
You are an imbecile. Dead or not i m playing and having fun. Thats the whole point of a video game, to entertain you. If you are not having fun with it just leave in silence please cause noone cares about your so called "points".
I ll rephrase it to keep it simple. If quake at this point is considered a dead game i hope it ll stay dead forever so i can enjoy it as it is without imbeciles like yourself who see video game as something it isnt.
I've linked to that 11 years old thread because I found it extremely funny that people were still arguing about the same bullshit about quake and fast fps games being dead in 2012 using the exact same arguments and coming up with roughly the same ideas ( give or take the stuff that simply wasn't there back then ).
I guess I forgot that some people around here are so dumb they'd use an 11yo thread to prove that quake is dead :D
As for the jaded part, I may not be really fond of the current few projects developped within the same genre but at least I'm basing that on gameplay stuff I don't agree with ( I admit, sometimes through rather harsh comments ), and not because it's not veequuthreee, it's not ceeepeeehaimm nor am I linking to 7yo demos to show how the whole genre is meant to be played period :p
and what if you can't? I go on peak hours and only see a small handful of servers all CA or FFA and all pinging way high / far away location. And no I'm not moving closer to society :p QL is the only game I have an issue finding people to play with (and the other games i play are from the late 90s...) We don't all live in Poland!
For what it's worth, I recently came to QL after getting burnt out of TF2 and quitting games for a year or so. I built a new rig and bought BF3 and a bunch of other newer games and they were all boring to me. I got a 120hz LCD and fired up QL to test out how smooth it was and got hooked. I know of several other people who just started playing as well.
QL needs better advertising and some tournament money injected into it. Tribes Ascend is booming in popularity competitively right now and it's horribly unbalanced, the maps are bad and the meta game is boring. Their advertising it as a higher skill game and getting tons of sponsors for leagues and tournaments and people are eating it up. There is definitely a big market out there for skill based fps games, many people are getting sick of the slow paced modern shooters.
I don't know if QL can get passed the "people have been playing longer than me, so I have no chance" stigma, but it's about time for a new resurgence in FPS "e-sports". TA and CS:GO are already lined up to take their pieces of that pie and I hope QL tries to capitalize on it as well. Or you know, QV:A would be even better.
I started Quake with Quake Live, and it seems relatively active even in NA as far as I'm concerned -- I can get matches 24/7.
I don't agree *at all* with the business model and the lack of advertising, though. I'm sure with a combination of better business practices and more advertising and tournament support, this game could see a resurgence in popularity. The world needs a competitive arena shooter to be popular again. :(
