Maybe your gfx card is full of shit and overheating occasionally.

Edit: also, the QL engine has nothing to do with Q3... in other words running QL isn't the same as running a 1999 game, it's more like running a 2006 game.

Edit #2: Try playing Crysis or any other game for a couple of hours on max settings to see if it also happens and is not just isolated to QL.

I play left 4 dead 2 once in a while and it runs good. Also to be honest i've started to experience weird lag spikes on Starcraft 2. Basically, I had a hd 5850 before and sc2 ran quite well after a few updates and such.. I got the gtx 480 because it is pretty cheap and is much better than 5850, it's not that I couldn't afford a high end graphic card, I just felt a 480 is more than enough for games i do play. With the 480 sc2 ran better but still sometimes lag spikes on game replays at 8x speed... I haven't had that on the 5850 at the earlier version until a year or so later. So, it might be my hard drive or maybe even windows. Since I'm planning to get an SSD drive this week and install a fresh windows 7 OS I'll see if it changes anything.

One thing to note is that on my old CFG I've had this lag, but when I got banned for whatever reason it is, suspected now that it could even be QLprism, some guy brought it up on a different thread, so it could be it for all i know. I've created a new account on a fresh CFG and my game actually ran BETTER, it was like WOAH such better response time and such. The lg felt much more responsive for sure.

Last night though, I played a game and my fps seems like 125-120 , like it had micro drops of 5 or so, maybe even more I don't know. Basically unstable. It's hard to say, cause I find quake running shitty when I leave my pc over night too, It could be a shitty windows, I'll let people know if any change when I get a new drive and a fresh install.

Bloom, postprocessing etc. has nothing to do with known idtech3 flaws/limitations so QL is nothing more but just eye-candy idtech3

i can run ql/q3 on 125 fps with old , slow radeon 128mb agp-8x , 2.4 celeron, any new pc-e -card should doo the job

I think I have the same problem since my previous mobo died. PC isn't slow at all and I have constant 125 fps on any map, but QL just runs like shit. A sort of timenudge -100 impacting models and textures combined with a 20hz refresh rate feeling.

I'm currently suspecting the mobo drivers, will tell ya if a new install fixed it.

Still horrible on a fresh install.

I used to have this problem or something similar, it happened on certain maps like Asylum and Quarantine. After changing my graphics card to an nVidia GTX 560 Ti the problems went away (was bugging with ATi HD5850).

Possible fixes I can think of (that do not require hardware changes):

- Update display drivers
- Clean PC out with compressed air
- Reinstall operating system

After that, if it still lags, there isn't much you can do really apart from changing hardware which is obviously undesirable.

I had the same problem with my HD5750. Got rid of it by putting core/mem clock rate on a fixed value with AtiTrayTools. That might be worth a try for nvidia users too (in addition to the usual stuff: disable aero, antivir etc and put windows power scheme on "performance" setting).

The aero thing you mean the windows theme? Just set it to something else that isn't in the aero category? And I put power on performance, I've had it on active before. Would be interesting to find out if it changed anything on other applications.

Do you have any mouse overclocked (like wmo at 1000hz)? Perhaps what you are experiencing is just the mousehz dropping

I use zowie AM now. So I can't say it's overclocked, but it is running at 1000hz. I might disable my anti virus for one day and see if it helps.

Check windows update, too. I noticed weird lags again after the last ms patch day. Regardless on what settings I have win update, as soon as updates are "in the pipeline" I get framedrops/lag/weird hiccups.

It's not really frame drops, it's more of like the other guy explained, as if my refresh rate drops to lower than it is. I remember the first time I got my monitor, the game felt so smooth, I actually enjoyed playing it although I wasn't that great. But now that I actually learned to aim somewhat I can feel the way it restricts my accuracy and it's annoying.

for example, for me it never occured on ZTN or DM13, but on T7 (Furious heights) i always had this problem.

-Make sure your mouse is set at 500hz or higher
-I have this problem at 1024* or higher. Try 800*600 resolution

I think I have it on every map. I just played Trinity and I lagged, also Campinggrounds, etc. To be honest until I get a new hdd and a fresh windows install I probably can't do anything. I tried to reset my config and I sorta felt a change, until I started to play around with the settings lol. I know a new config helped me last time, but the problem seems to have caught up to me, I suspect it's right after the new update yesterday.

I get the same problem sometimes if I minimize the game. As soon as I reopen it it feels like I'm playing with 60 hz (instead of 120). My r_displayrefresh is still 120 and my fps is stil 125, but it just feels like I'm playing on an old 5 ms. 60 hz LCD monitor.

For me it's fixed by typing vid_restart. Tried that?

I tried with no anti virus and aero theme, besides making my desktop looking dull nothing changed. The lag started from yesterday, so I don't know. To me it feels like crappy ID server machines, but who knows. I'm on wireless as well, so maybe it has some say in that. The game just feels like crap, although if I recall right on practice mode it feels a bit cleaner. I think it could even be my ISP, Rogers, I have a feeling they got shitty ass routing, because sometimes when I go to Canadian servers eventhough my ping is 45 it feels like 150, my lg sways like crazy after a small movement that's how I know the lag is bad. I remember once playing with ping 100 and it felt better than the TO server.

QL is a shit, it has weird netcode and 1999's engine, which doesn't optimised for the modern PCs.

Try Xonotic and Warsow, and you will notice the difference.

I used to get stuttering fps which tended to drop from 5-20 out of 125 every few seconds. I decided to uninstall my mcafee anit-virus and install microsoft security essentials instead, BOOM all lag gone :D.

It could be a post processing issue. If it isn't, it's your graphics card. I have the same thing with my HD5870 1gb and my card is fine. I can run games like COD4 and what not at full FPS with no problems, but Quake runs really stuttery even though the FPS still reads 125fps. Try reinstalling your gfx drivers, and if that doesn't work I'm sorry to say your only fix (as far as I know any way?) would be installing a new graphics card.

Also, I don't get it on all maps. The worst two in particular are Asylum and Quarantine. All duel maps are fine. It's the same as you said aswell - It is a ton better in practice mode but it is still there. It's not your ISP, or I'd be highly surprised if it was.

Sounds like shit CPU or RAM to me.

I suggest you try installing some old drivers - quake doesn't handle the newest very well, nvidia and ati.

Try this:

Go into game
Open Task Manager
Set priority high (i use realtime but dno how healthy it is so be careful)

Usually fixes the stuttering for me. QLprism has a config utility which you can access from start menu that sets it always to high.

Actually you should use rescource monitor; it shows you network activity and is alot more extensive than task manager, not alot of people know they have it just search for it in the start bar.

I reinstalled my windows on a new hdd and the problem seems to have gotten away. My fps seem consistant. My theory is this... My hdd was getting full so it's performance dropped dramatically. I've used like a 500GB hdd and I have like 20GB free space? I also read that it's not good to have your hdd fully allocated. It's better to actually have some unallocated space to have all the junk go there or what not. I don't know how hdds work and I didn't put much research into it, just the necessities since I'm getting a new SSD next week. Some guy said you should leave about 10-20 percent unallocated space to have it run at top shape for a long time. I assume same thing goes with the other hdds. So yeah... Quake seems ok, will test sc2 to see if my fps stutter bs is still there. I'll get back with news about that if anyone even cares lmao. Also just to make it clear, the windows I'm using now is "clean". I used a modified windows before that I got off torrents lol, this one is a real copy with no modifications, so possibly it could also play a role in something.

Just tested sc2 and it works good. So I guess case somewhat dismissed on my part. On sc2 I used to have my fps drop to like 1 for an instant and then go back up and it did it frequently throughout the game.

you could also buy a RJ-45 cable. No "gamer" uses a wireless connection.

and now that you can play again, don't listen to the russian (#42) trying to get you into games with 20 players that are based on QW and Q2 engines.

Make sure the flip queue size of your video card is not more than 1. Most video cards from Nvidia and AMD will pre-render more than 1 frame and store that in a buffer to compensate for fps drops in certain scenes. This makes your input feel laggy (because it is). With AMD, you can use Ati Tray Tools by Ray Adams to set the display flip queue size to 0 or 1 (1 works better for me).

Also, even if you have a high end card, it helps to put mipmap and texture filtering options on "performance" and turn off anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering, as this will shorten your graphics processing pipeline and reduce the lag you experience from your computer taking some time to compute your input and the scene.

If you reinstall windows+drivers my shit runs smooth for about a week.. After that it starts again.

My pc specs are fine and i've tried all kinds of spyware-removal-tools, and yes, all other (more demanding games) runs just fine.. A reboot does help a little bit from time to time.

I fixed this issue with forcing steady gpu clock and mem clock. My gfx card clocked down somehow during playing quakelive and i got some stuttering, espacially on maps like asylum and quarantine, although my fps were stable 125.
