i can confirm fazz' statement. when i attended the eindhoven lan it felt awsome. the thing is u get to know all the players and u talk about general play and some game situations. some players have a completely different view or game understanding towards the game which affects ur thinking and surely improves your understanding. also its an amazing experience sitting behind the players and watching it from their view. the lan improved my ctf play tremendously!

I had many situations where a small crowd would watch a game standing behind a player, and I would ask "why did he do that?", and get feedback from whoever was standing there. Sometimes you just realize what priorities are, or get to know a neat sound trick, etc. Big and small things, all concentrated. After a couple of days of that, your brain is breathing Quake :)

A blown out reply to you, hopefully interesting for somebody.

Granted that, "people is people wherever you go", and "if you know how to approach them you'll get the best out of it", this is my experience.

There are two things you have to consider while approaching pro players:

1) The environment where you meet them
2) The stress they are subject to

1) ESL events were at huge convensions, with big crowds, loud stages, flashing lights. After the games people would just disappear, and the interaction was a bit poor. As they were in fairly sized cities, people tended to spread out and, if you did not know somebody in the pro group, you could feel excluded and wonder why you went there in the first place. In general, that's a pretty bad environment for a fan-pro exchange.

Totally on the other side, UGC had a super nice environment, with nice sunny spots outside to sit down and talk during the day breaks, a quiet atmosphere inside with space to crowd around the PCs, all the poeple hosted on a few hotels close to each others, dinners all toghether etc.

To me dreamhack is also fairly comfortable. While the event looks a bit more like a cebit/gamescom, it is still more friendly, as it does not bombard your ears/eyes so much, Quake people stays at one place with not so many randoms wandering around, and the city is smaller. Quakers tend to hang out together at night. So there is time to break the ice and interact.

2) Some pros take tournament very seriously (as it should be). To make the best example, take rapha. He is possibly the nicest, most humble, down to earth guy among the pros, but you will not be able to talk much with him while the tournament is still running. Originally this looked odd to me, but I eventually realized he takes his own space to focus and feel the proper way.

The first day is usually the worst. Lot's of stress on the players, worsen by the usual technical issues here and there, and no matter how you behave there is just too much emotional energy in the air. The tension usually melts as the tournament progresses. Pros drop out of the tournament, take some time to be quiet/sad/raged, and they eventually relax and try to enjoy the rest of the event.

Once you see these things, you can decide how to approach them. Personally, I had very good experiences with the pros. I think one just has to understand them, let them have their space, and be a friendly person.

Look at other sports for example when a seriously good contender (I'm not saying that this describes me just describes how seeds work) doesn't compete for a while he or she will have a shit seed the next tournament they play in (happens a lot in women tennis btw).

I really would like to, but money is kinda an issue right now. I hope that 2gd will commentate finals at least. Honestly I don't like zoot's commentary, but it's my personal opinion, so...

I on the other hand like Zoot's style very much. He's laid back, but when something happens he delivers the information and excitement. Also his casting differs depending on situation. When he casts at home it's all chill, but for example when he covered ctf lan he stepped his game up and it was all serious bussiness (to some extent ofcourse:]).

zoot is sexy! he needs more insanity though ive never heard him freaking out totally

I wouldn't go as far as sexy but Zoot's style is cool and he knows what he's talking about. I think nvc and Zoot together would be a good combination. It's difficult to pair anyone with 2GD since he's too good (see what i did there:) for others to balance out, so he just takes over (in a nice way) so it ends up being 2GD + someone who nods, agrees and pours him drinks lol.

How about zoot + disrepute? I think I've probably heard them together at some point, but I can't remember how it went.

(I feel like Zoot could work well with most people, whereas Disrepute, although awesome, has a particular style and sense of humour that flows smoothly with some people but not with others. He and vor are good together -- they seem to know each other well, and they can joke around + cover the game nicely at the same time.)

imo disrepute and vor are a great combination but they live in symbiosys none of the other is able to survive without the other. seems like harry potter strikes again

and you have to add that they cast well tdm only.

I think disrepute is a great caster, but he will be the first to admit - he hates duel. And as much as he's fully capable of casting duel matches without that sentiment coming across, anyone who's heard his comments about duel while he's casting TDM, will know he's only pretending to be interested in the match while he's casting a duel match and that undermines it a bit. Zoot and nvc on the other hand both play and love duel, so you know their interest and enthusiasm is genuine which helps. The 2 of them are however perhaps a little on the downbeat end of the casting spectrum so perhaps maybe not as good a pairing as I first thought. Owzo and 2GD togaether could be interesting... both quite excitable in very different ways.

Although Dis doesn't like duel very much he's casting of it with Zoot (which we had opportunity to check out a few times now) is also terrific. I'm not sure what's the lvl^ team for DHS (apart from Zoot), but I wouldn't mind if it was Disrepute at all. He just knows this shit well whether he enjoys particular gametype or not:] And yeah the Dis/Vor symbiosis is great and produces one of the best banters I have ever heard:] (and very professional casting).

Alessandro "stermy" Avallone Breaks my hearth to say it, but I wont be able to attend Dreamhack Summer because it`s at the same time as SOPA and I will be coming back from the US few days before that aswell (Just got my schedule today). This is really unfortunate, because I would have loved to compete at Dreamhack as usual, one of the best tournaments in the World for me and I haven`t missed one in ages. I will be missing all the people and the players there - just make sure to keep supporting this great event that runs QuakeLive and does awesome stuff for esport!

I've only seen a couple of youtube videos.

The part I liked most is the simplicity of the map editor. It looks like a starcraft editor, with tiles and predefined structures. This should allow anyone to build maps, relatively quickly, and could definitely lead to interesting developments.

From the short footage I could see, the game looks a mix of UT and tribes, but with no items, fewer weapons, and simple winning conditions (domination/team fragging). As quaker, the first impression is a "dumbed down" fps, but I'd like to try it before really judging.

A big question is what role the developers will have. LoL may have created a case for other to follow.

Judging by previous DH lineups (2010, 2011), I'd say this years line up is pretty damn cool.

I'm just somewhat disappointed that stermy isn't going, he's name on that list of invited players just stands out.
