He tried hard, never won a big one, stopped playing to "support" the game in "other" ways, and now switches to a rail+rocket noitem alpha game leaving DH with getting other player to replace him. Dont get me wrong he would aim rape me, hes a better younger more experienced player, but when money is your only priority, youre not better than a whore. That mentality is a big part of Quakes downard spiral, people unable to cope the place you get in the rank that quit or bashes with excuses based on their playstile preferences, been there seen it with many local players. I dont pay my bills thanks to QL yet im very grateful to enjoy playing and speccing and seeing movies and to the awesome players.
You even know what you are talking about? Stermy played a lot of different games on top level, appart from his success with FIFA in the CGS with San Francisco Optx where he had earned several thousands a month, getting all expences paid. In Painkiller he was Top 4 of the world, getting four 2nd and 3rd places giving him a total of over 100k $ in prizemoney. In Quake IV he was Top of the world again with winning WSVG Kentucky and coming in 2nd and 3rd in several other events. Quake Live he also has played exceptionally well, mostly in CTF/TDM tough.
If you measure success by how many 1st places a player has taken you are just simply dumb. Success is measured by looking over the whole career of a player valuating how consistent his preformance was and how much profit he has made trough it and stermy is one of the most consistent and successfull players out there.
Lost cause is not of the same caliber as Toxjq or Avek. Nobody can argue against this. Neither is Stermy; he has never beaten the big names in key games/when it mattered. Consistently very good, but not amongst the very, very best of Painkiller (Vo0 etc), Quake 4 (Tox/Avek) and Quake Live (Rapha/Cypher/(At world finals) Cooller.
Please don't take this as some attempt to put Stermy down or to invoke anger; he is a very, very good, hard working dedicated professional gamer who has done very well, made a living for himself as well as giving back to the sport (UGC is awesome). I really enjoy watching him play, and would much rather have him competing/contributing than not.
My point is Stermy has never at any one point been the best or "Top of the world" as you claim. This is nothing but a ridiculous and biased claim with no merit. So that''s my point.
You just don't want to understand do you? At the end of the CPL WT he was on 4th place, at the end of WSVG 2006 he was under the 6 players who got invited to the finals. For me that's pretty much top of the world, there were only 3/5 guys above him so yeah he was definitely one of the best players in Painkiller and even in Quake 4.
Well, you've changed it to "pretty much top of the world" so in some ways I have made my point :P
Take this example: Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello driving at ferrari, 2002.
They utterly dominate the season; ferrari's constructors points haul is the same as the rest of the field combined. A phenomenal achievement.
Rubens Barrichello was "pretty much on top of the world", finishing second. And yet, there was a huge, HUGE difference between the two drivers (for various reasons, including team orders). We all knew he would never, EVER win it, but for sure would be at the top end of the field due to the exemplary F2002 competitor Ferrari had produced .
The same can be said for Stermy; he has got (rather) close. However, he has never, ever, EVER looked like he was going to win a big title.
The closest he has ever come was WSVG Summer when he won the upper bracket final vs Ztrider (who beat Toxjq). Toxjq then steam rolled over him in two 2:0 sets, and Stermy never had an opening throughout those four games.
I assure you that I "understand" your point of him being amongst the best players in the world, across several FPS'es. At no point have I claimed otherwise. My point is, which YOU "don't want to understand" is there always was/is a disparity between Stermy's level of play and the very best out there. Simple as that.
In painkiller stermy has placed top3 at most of the tournaments and beat ALL of the top players beside vo0, few times during the time frame painkiller was used at tournaments (zyz/ztrider/fatal1ty/stelam/etc). Took 3rd place at the finals.
When he played quake4, stermy was the most dominant player with toxjq. Placed top2 at every WSVG stop (1st,2nd,2nd,2nd - going out of the top3 only at the last one), 3rd WCG and 2nd at i32 or something. He was basically one of the top contenders all the time.
During CGS he played Fifa for few weeks and did ok the first year, but the second one he was the best USA player with Eafra and placed 2nd at the CGS world finals.
In Quakelive, with all the breaks he took, he still managed to place top5-8 all the tournaments and even took top3 at quakecon 2010 when he was actually practicing - last year he won 2 Dreamhacks in TDM and 2nd at Quakecon. Dont even wanna mention all the other Achievements he got, because it`s pointless.
Just wanted to point that out, since it seems you are basically saying he`s never been a top player...tell you what, mention another player that has been as dominant as him in so many different games...
his point was stermy hasn't been top1 material in any game.
He seems like a very nice guy, but you have to accept the fact that (as far as I know) he hasn't won a single duel international lan, or fifa tournament
"Beat ALL the top players beside vo0". So your agreeing with me? How about reading the thread before going on a rant:
"Please don't take this as some attempt to put Stermy down or to invoke anger; he is a very, very good, hard working dedicated professional gamer who has done very well, made a living for himself as well as giving back to the sport (UGC is awesome). I really enjoy watching him play, and would much rather have him competing/contributing than not."
??
You seem personally offended that I have degraded your hero. I know where he has placed in all the games and tournaments he has competed in. As I have said, he has never won any of them and is not the best of the best in any game he has competed in. That was my point. Your claim of him being a "dominant" player is incorrect (unless your using a different definition of the word from everyone else. Tell me where I have said he isn't a good player?
Also: "Stermy was the most dominant player with Toxjq". Utter bollocks. At the start of quake 4, it was Cooller who was the player to beat, and Toxjq was catching up to him, taking over the mantle when he beat Cooller at Quakecon 2006. From that moment on, various players would put up the best fight at different tournaments (Stermy, Cypher etc) until Avek stepped up his game. Avek and Toxjq were then in a league of their own from that point until the death of WSVG and subsequently the end of the pro q4 scene. Dahang has a couple of really strong tournaments at the very end as well.
I would agree with Stermy being one of the most consistent players alongside Toxjq.
"Dominant" is certainly not the correct word to describe him. Cmon.
So, you haven't "pointed out" anything, and just went on a biased rant which agrees with everything I have posted.
"Tell you what, mention another player that has been as dominant as him in so many different games..."
How about his mentor, Fatality?!
AVP2
Doom 3
Quake 3
Quake 4
UT 2003
And in ALL of those games he has been more successful and "dominant" than Stermy has in Quake 4, arguably his best game. So tell you what, I have mentioned a player that has been more dominant than him in so many different games. Muppet.
It makes me really sad but I'm going to stand next to wtfproof on this one and ask if you would have said the same thing if it were fox and not stermy.
On top of what Proof wrote, Stermy actually reinvested his own damn money into QL by organizing a LAN. He did that for us, dude, and you're calling him a whore. That's a shitty way of saying "thanks".
I'm a Professional gamer since 2002, I've been playing 8 games Professionally at the highest level - competing in the most important tournaments worldwide. (Quake3,Doom3,Unreal Tournament 2004, Painkiller, Quake4, Fifa07, Fifa08, QuakeLive)
I`m not leaving Quake FYI, just going to compete in something new in June that seems well supported and promising. We`ll see how it develops in the future , still planning to go to Quakecon if nothing changes in the next month or two.
I`ve been really busy in the past year, you guys know that, and you have no idea how much I miss practicing and competing regulary. This new game is bringing that for me and it`s alot of motivation and some fresh h-air* that I needed.
I`ve always supported our beloved game and always will!
THIS. Also "still planning to go to Quakecon if nothing changes in the next month or two." hmmm setting the stage to +back from quakecon too. At least he tries to sound nice, but actions talk a lot more than cheap words.
so what? he's allowed to do whatever he wants, you silly chump. he is in no debt to you or anyone on this site, besides the fact that if there is one quake 'pro' who tried to support the game in the past it has been him.
That's true, but it's not unexpected that when one of the most beloved pros on the scene is putting quake aside for sth like shootmania people are upset about it. Apart from gStructor nobody is hating on Stermy. I wish him the very best, but this decission (while perfectly understandable) saddens me.
The betrayal part is mostly by sending dh petition -> being announced -> hype -> /quit to Shitmania. As many have said he already played a lot of games, but crapping on DH in this way IS BETRAYAL PERIOD, maybe he accepted some bucks from nadeo? THE DRAMA. Yes im mad, but relaxed at the same time cause nobody escapes the laws of cause and effect. In a nushell yes owning shootmania nabs isnt that bad, crapping DH QL tourney fucking is.
the fact "sending dh petition -> being announced -> hype -> /quit to Shitmania." isn't really relevant, because he could, and i mean he could, have been waiting to the shitmania accords or whatsoever, and when they where done, then choose shitmania instead of dh.
The thing that made me sad is that he claimed "sorry for dh"; okay, sorry, but a choice is a choice.
Still, i don't feel bad or anything, because if he wanted to make some money, and he considered that he could do better in shitmania than in dh, (and maybe, wanted some new things after so many years of the similar ones).
The really problem is shitmania, and how can such a basic (=empty, not basic) game have any attention (and so much money) at all.
And how its possible that id cannot put more money/hype for such an, after all, collauded/complex game?
You could at least have some dignity and tell us honestly that you chose this poor boring noobified crap of a game because it is managed by not as big idiots as id, so it has chance to become popular and bring more competitive money, and also that you have more chance to win in noob game by aim and good hair only, but no, you chose to hide behind silly marketing statement. You lost all respect of all quake players, please do not even attempt to return, and go play your shitmania if you are so fond of shit.
I think "team fps" and "fast fps" aren't mutual exclusive. In fact I would dare to state the most people prefer team-based fps nowadays and shootmania also looks pretty fast to me (compared to other "modern" fps, not compared to painkiller/cpma).
Shootmania might be the game to keep the genre in the focus of esports, or do you see any (upcoming) alternative for the next 5 years?
Well there is War§ow which get's better with every release and is free. Also Q4 is going to be rereleased, but you are right that ShootMania is probably the only one to keep the genre alive.
talk for yourself... once you organize a fucking LAN like UGC and have actually DONE more for quake than most people on this site, you can talk about "losing respect" and whatever else
omg imagined shadow to look different, just his voice didnt match his look. and pavel looks like a typical interviewee from those russian prison documentaries. now i understand tox, its better to +back than get murdered :D
dude... I once went round the backstreets of Cork and came across a small square full of about 30 kids, 12-16 yo all wearing the same clothes D: (white reebok tracksuits) what's all that about
and memes come from Pavel playing close games with toxic in zotac and tox telling pavel that he doesn't know what would happen to him on lan. and now pavel is going and tox isn't so...:]
