Yeah. Unfortunately, most of cheap routers have shitty QsS capabilities so you never know will it work or not.

i am quite lucky there.

i use ip tv and can easily download at 5mb/s while channel-hopping through hd-channels.

Get a router with QoS, set QL ports range (UDP 27900-28000?) top priority, rest low prio. Set the maximum incoming/outgoing speed at different values till you find one that works. 30% less than the real speed is a good start, but you may need 50% or even more to attain a good enough experience. This is so the connection isnt saturated.

Yes QoS works quite good, but if you aren't familiar with all these options etc. and you don't have anyone who can help you it will be hard to make it working. At least on some cheaper router models with QoS.

I assume she's on a wireless connection? If your router supports it, you can limit the overall speed of your wireless connection, if you're on LAN and she's using a laptop you can force it to 1mbps, or two, or whatever you want. Saves you from having to buy a new router that supports QoS (that would be the best solution though)

See if your router is on the list of Tomato-compatible routers. Then identify the proper build of Tomato you need. Next, download the proper Tomato build. Finally, flash your router, set it up, and go to the QoS page in the router preferences to limit bandwidth. I know for a fact that QoS works perfectly with Toastman's Tomato build on even a shitty $40 ASUS router

Just install net limiter on her PC.

Give her 20% of your upload and download, unless you have a bad connection that should be more than enough for you and plenty for her to fanny around on facebook/youtube/general browsing.

Plus if she pisses you off, there's something satisfying about knowing you're stealing her bandwidth or you can put her on a program and lower her upload and download depending on how she behaves.
