I'm not sure why punkbuster didn't work. I understand that it takes screenshots and sends them (and that may hurt bandwidth a bit), but today internet connections are commonly broadband and computers are much faster.

Lets say that the server picks a 20 random moments throughout a 10 minute game to take screenshots BEFORE the game starts. Those 20 random moments are taken and included encrypted metadata in the screenshot (to authenticate the screenshots so clever hackers replace them with faked screenshots). Taking 20 screenshots and upload them to an archive where all the players can see/review them seems doable to me. If someone really thinks someone is wallhacking, they can go check this out.

I do not think it would hurt anyone's connections or cripple anyone's computers. It would definitely get rid of wallhacking. As for aimbots, I think the full demos should also be uploaded somewhere and archived for 6 months as well for each player. Include the same encrypted metadata to authenticate them.

In other words, don't try to automate the detection of cheaters. Rather post some useful info and let suspecting players investigate on their own time.

I dunno how, but some hacks can easily surpass this (organner.pl did it for a long time with aequitas, the anti-cheat the ESL used before wire anti-cheat, which utilizes ring0). Even though I don't know how much of a game changer it would be to get the server more involved. Laymen reasoning on my side would suggest that such a cheat gets somehow hold of the command (the server has to send it to the client, right?) and then delays it for some ms to turn the cheat off. Clean screenshots are the result. But it would be nice if someone knowledgable could say something on your suggestion.

I could easily write a wallhack that doesn't change anything on "the screen." it could dump straight to the framebuffer. it could modify things in post processing through some device in-line with my VGA/DVI cable, which software has no access to. it could output to dual monitors. it could do anything, really.

Cause cry-hards argued that punkbuster was causing ping issues, because as we know EVERYTHING imaginable is the reason cry-hards are losing. Then cheaters acting all flummoxed concerning WHY their screenshots were corrupted and flat-black...cause they obviously weren't cheating and this wasn't a bypass for the screenshot functionality. They're just as confused as the admin...but they want you to unban them from your server cause you don't have proof.

The screenshot thing seems avoidable as it seems likely you could program a hack that separates QL rendering into two separate states, one that would return vanilla QL render to the PB SS request, and the other possessing the hacked overlay to the user.

That's not really the issue. The argument is that no cheat protection is 100 percent, therefore we don't need it. Cheating and dirty plays are a part of every LIVE sport. Just cause the refs can't catch it, doesn't make the referees useless (though I agree it does feel that they are at times). Cheat software is a digital referee, he keeps every in line because he is an idle threat always watching you. Yeah, you can still get away with some BS, but you know your boundaries. There are always going to be dirty players, but you need cheat software. Cheat software updates, detects whatever massive cheat infection has turned up on their radar through simple scouring of cheat message boards, and shuts it down. More cheats will turn up, but at least those players were removed if at least temporarily. Is law enforcement worthless, because there will always be crime and criminals that continue to commit crime no matter how many times they have been incarcerated? NOTHING is 100 percent effective at anything! Drug treatment, Surgery, Education, Voting System...the list is infinite. Does the fact that they can never be 100 percent perfect make them useless?

Quakelive anticheat is already installed in ur pc, i remember long ago an anticheat caused me to lag like fuck for a good 10 seconds, seems it was taking screens of my monitor to see if i was hacking.

this is what quakelive is doing now, but its complaint controlled, not automatic, so when ur playing and someone said u cheat, sync uses the autoscreenshot thing to take a picture of ur screen then reviews it, then he busts into the game all confident and bans u with a smile on his face

i know this cuz i've been screenshotted like 10 times already, always when i'm tearing up people with ridiculous aim
